Tonight won an exhibition game over William Woods University in an impressive fashion.  WW had considerable height advantage with a starting forward 6' 11" and backup center at 7' 1" and another starter at 6' 9", but Calvin was able to win the rebound battle by outstanding positioning.  Both teams played excellent defense to begin the game, but Calvin was more consistent.  On offense Morrison hit 6 of 8 three point shots and the team had a good number of assists for layups.  By the second half Calvin stretched the lead to 20 to 25 points and the subs played the last 12 minutes for both teams.

Platteville 63  Olivet 57  F

Comets were tough tonight, hung with a very good Platteville team and had an opportunity for the stunning upset but came up empty in the last two minutes as P'ville scored the last 8 points of the game.  I kept waiting for P'ville to explode on offense but they never did, not great shooting for either team but there was a lot of preyty good defense by both squads.

A performance for Olivet made even more impressive with leading scorer Eddie Thigpen sitting this out, as well as Chris Martin continued absence both from the team and the roster.  Don't know what kind of roster Olivet will enter MIAA play with but they're gonna be a pretty tough opponent on most nights maybe.

Olivet's starting to look like 2014 or 2015 Alma, to bold or nah?.

Platteville is ranked #2 by Massey, undefeated in a power conference, and this result was tied for their closest game.  The other 6 point victory was against Massey#8 LaCrosse. Remarkable result!

I think Olivet has a legitimately very good defense. They'll compete for a spot in the top half of the conference and could probably beat anyone on any night. At this point though, I don't think they have the consistency on offense to really make a run at a top spot.

UW La Crosse 68  Trine 61

La Crosse with an exceptional shooting 1st half, over 65% from the floor, and jumped on the Thunder early and we never recovered.  Down 40-19 at the break, the Thunder had a very long halftime talk in the locker room, only came out to the floor with maybe 2 minutes to warm up before the start of the second half.  Whatever was said it was like a light switch turned on.  We went to a full court trapping press which rattled the Eagles some and little by little got back in to the game.  Just too much of a deficit to make up.  La Crosse doesn't make many mistakes, very good at running their offense, especially the 1st half it was either a layup drill or kick outs for open 3 pointers, which they don't miss many.  By contrast we didn't make a 3 until maybe 5 minutes to go.  La Crosse's defense is very good.  They are ranked for a reason.  They were a little shaky from the free throw line, which allowed us to make it a game towards the end.  Encouraged by the second half, but we do have our shortcomings.

La Crosse:  Cook 20, Seth Anderson 12, Ethan Anderson 12
Trine:  Bowman 17, Warzecha 16, Geller 11

WI Platteville 73, Hope 63 . . . though the first 33 minutes were a draw, at 49 apiece, with the teams seldom separated by more than 4 points.

Hope can play with, defend, and (yesterday, at least) out rebound the best of DIII. So if its shooting could ever click (yesterday's starters were 1 of 16 from 3-point), it could be competitive with anyone, certainly in its own league.

Hope's 83% season free throw shooting is excellent. But the offensive weave, without a classic back-to-the-post player to draw double teams, seems not to produce many open-look 3 point attempts, especially from a team as skilled as Platteville

I expect we may be seeing more of Jaxon Halbert, whose 54% season 3-point average and agility at driving for layups shows promise.

All in all, a not-discouraging loss. The grit is there, if only the shots could start falling.

Yes, Dutchmen season averages of 38.7% FG and 29.5% 3PT seem to be the glaring problem spot.  That's not going to get it done against most decent teams.

Calvin picked up another 2022 commit last night in Northern Michigan Christian wing Trevin Winkle: https://twitter.com/TrevinWinkle/status/1470948683898400772

I'm not sure if it's the continued proliferation of social media and players wanting to make announcements but seems like these are coming earlier than we usually see.

This is a signing week for d1, right? Probably just announcing along with teammates.

I'll get working on setting things up then for the Pick 'Em contest, and will post a link to the page for it when ready to go
