Calvin did a much better job dictating tempo. It was nice to see them use some full court pressure and take advantage of some mismatches on offense to turn a comfortable game into a laugher before halftime. As oldknight noted, a 15-0 run closed the half for Calvin and the lead only continued to grow in the second. Thad Shymanski used a size advantage to do most of his damage with 17 first half points. Shymanski finished with a game high 19 in only 19 minutes. Bill Sall was able to start emptying his bench with eight or nine minutes to go. Nice to get some more guys some experience without using more energy than necessary today.

Funny play of the game came when Emmett Warners found himself with the ball but on the floor with the shot clock running down. He got the shot up from his backside and it was enough to get rim, Calvin collected the offensive rebound and Warners then found himself the recipient of a pass to drain a three pointer. That's a quick reward for the effort! Not sure I have ever seen a play like that before.

Trine 80  Albion 37

It was all about lockdown defense by the Thunder today.  Trine jumped out early, clamped down on defense and it snowballed from there.  We had Albion confused the entire game.  It's not like we are all that athletic, but we have a lot of high IQ guys who understand the defensive concepts that Coach drills them on in practice everyday.  We're not an offensive juggernaut, so for us to be successful we have to play defense and today's game was a clinic on how to play it exceedingly well.

Trine:  Cox 15, Bowman 12, Williams 11, Warzecha 11, Geller 11

Hope, which had 10 of 17 players suited up today, had a similar funny play . . . in which Evan Thomas collected one of his 12 rebounds while lying flat on his back under the basket . . . plus an assist when he passed it up to TJ for a basket.

All 10 players played and played well.

---Albion was a little shorthanded today but it shouldn't have made that much difference, they were just completely overwhelmed by Trine's defense from the first possession on.  Cortez Garland didn't start but played, looks broken and really didn't do much to influence the game, no Albion player really did.  Freshmen Jack Kennedy played for the first time since early November, while he didn't do much to change the game, he did grab 8 rebounds, but didn't have a lot of great touch around the rim.  He's been out with a broken hand.

---Trine beat Albion to the spots on defense all night long, right on the dribblers hips and then challenged nearly every pass and shot inside the arc from multiple angles.  It was an impressive all around performance.

---Trine has the personnel to win the league and maybe easily, steep drop to the next best defensive team in the league I think.  They were on it today.

---Don't think I've seen an Albion team so completely out of a game, they were sort of lucky to keep it under 50.  I think you have to go pretty far back to find an Albion team on the losing end of an MIAA league game by 40+

---Albion ended up with 26 turnovers in a 70 possession game, threw away 1/3 of their possessions, but that's what Trine does to you.

---On the drive home I realized this looked a lot like Hope's effort at Trine last year

You don't see Albion teams this discombobulated on defense to often    These are brothers failing to communicate a switch.

What are we even doing here Albion

Game wasn't in doubt here but Trine scores 8 points in 25 seconds,   this immediately followed the awful Briton possession above.

I've seen that call a lot - defenders trying to draw an elbow call or a shoulder.  Anytime the ref thinks a guy moved without being hit, they're certainly free to call it.

It was called on the offensive player.

Hope 61  Trine 48  F

Trine coming off a 43 point beat down over Albion and Hope down 3 starters, resigned myself to just being happy to be at a game and eating at Russ's.   These two teams spent most of the game wrecking each others offensive intentions, then Hope made some shots and Trine didn't.

Hope:  Hedrick 17, Thomas 15
Trine:  Bowman 11, Geller 10

3 games I've seen Albion beat Calvin, Trine crush Albion and Hope beat Trine.  But really all I saw was the home teams finding ways to win on their own court.

When someone other than Evan is making shots , Hope's offense looks very different. Last night it was Noah.

I really think this Hope team could beat just about anyone if Evan, Clayton, and Noah all got hot for a complete game. But when they all go cold at the same time...
Let's go Dutchmen!

Really, really impressive performance by the Hope TEAM last night.  Evan Thomas with a hot start (10 pts in the first 7 min or so) helpedf Hope get an early lead.  He also rebounds so well (second straight double-double for him), finished with 15 pts 12 reb in 39 min.  Noah Hedrick comes off the bench and scores 17 with 15 of those in the 2nd half (4-4 FG including 3-3 from 3PT, and 4-4 FT).  Two big contributors, but it was really the whole team in this one, winning on multiple items:

- This was truly a defensive battle, just look at the PP (points per possesion) - Hope: .954 and Trine: .747

- Turnovers - Trines ability to turn teams over has been their calling card for years, but the Dutchmen matched them last night, 17 TO per team - BUT Hope outscored Trine 24-8 on pts off TO.

- Rebounding - Hope won the battle 41-32, with 12 ORB and 11 2nd chance points (to 7 for Trine) - Lilja (9 total 5 off) and Schoonveld (8 total 3 off) wiht huge contributions.

- Bench production - Hope not only outscored Trine 24-11 here, but the bench shot 8-13 from the field and 5-7 from the FT line

Hope did only shoot .563 fromm the FT line (Were #1 in the nation in FT% at .841 prior to league play, after the last 2 games now #3 nationally at .816).

So now the question becomes, who is available and healthy tomorrow at Calvin, and do they have the legs and stamina for a rivalry game.  Let's HOPE so!
