You Hope and Calvin folks never cease to impress me. Just when I'm convinced that after all these years you can't possibly find another reason to crack each other over the noggin, you prove me wrong. The degree of disparity in emphasis in the P.A. guy's announcement of made shots? That is sheer genius in the field of hunting for grievances.

This is why Williams vs. Amherst, Wabash vs. DePauw, Wooster vs. Wittenberg, etc., eat your guys' dust.

Yup. It's just another day in the Rivalry, when the fans on the winning side can largely ignore their team's impressive road victory, in order to manufacture a non-controversy about PA announcements. There just is no rivalry like this in America. Sports Illustrated was wrong when they put Calvin/Hope in the Top 5. We're clearly number 1, with no serious competition for the "Best-Rivalry-in-America" crown.

Football season brought my positive karma up above my negative karma for maybe the first time ever. This is 100% because Calvin doesn't have a football team.

The PA announcers are very low on my list of reasons why I hate watching games at Van Noord. Above them, in no particular order are East Beltline/28th St./131 traffic getting to the game, how far from the court any seat not in the lower bowl feels, the log jam parking, the pressure of the water in the bathrooms (seems ridiculous, but try washing your hands at Van Noord and you'll understand), then maybe the PA announcers.... I'm also not a fan of the lighting, but that's a personal preference and Calvin fans will tell you the Madison Square Garden lighting is one of the best things about Van Noord.

You forgot several I would rank pretty high:  1) the "scoreboard" which is new and supposed to be an improvement (essentially just a higher resolution monitor than the last one, with no player stats on it at all???) and 2) the awful cell reception and spotty WiFi.  Combine those two and you have literally no way to get stats while you are there.

I have not been there to experience the scoreboard. I made the decision several years ago to not go back to Van Noord for a regular season game. I chose not to go in 2019 when the MIAA tournament was last there, so I believe the last time I attended a game in Van Noord was the Jordan Brink game in 2015.

But I did forget about the wifi/cell service. I'll add it to my personal running list...

I am eating this up with a spoon ... and greatly looking forward to February 16, when the Calvin contingent reciprocates with a gripe session of their own about DeVos. Perhaps the whole matter will culminate in sac proudly posting the long-lost picture of condiment dispensers.

Burton Ave.  can be your friend.

When I lived in Holland I frequently exited I196 at Chicago Dr, the sketchy one past Grandville, Burlingame down to Burton and took that across.  It may not save time but certainly saved aggravation.  M-6 changed that game years ago, if I lived there now I'd probably exit at Kalamazoo because of Chick-Fil-A and be late to the games.

From Lansing 28th to Patterson to Burton saves at least 15 minutes of sitting at red light time on the busiest days.

I find NVA a nice place to watch a game, sometimes it feels to big but that's more of a design issue than a seating issue, but otherwise its in the top 5 of D3 venues easily.

Like every place it has its faults (hello window glare and constant flow of cold air in Holland) Wednesday I thought the lighting created weird shadows.  It seems they upgraded the lighting from the original and its not better?

Also, what's with that medieval castle looking thing in Grandville that definitely doesn't look like bank fraud occurred?

I'm certain it's the lack of my presence and not the lack of Veldhouse, Daly, or Brinks that's the reason for the good fortunes.

11-9 is correct, I missed the first season split at VNA.  Of course it was dead even 9-9 through the 19-20 season.  Hope has now won 2 in a row.

I am interested in any Calvin fans thoughts on the new scoreboard (maybe it only bugs me)

I am hoping it will be better utilized in the future, although I thought the same thing of the old board.  :-\

The scoreboard will be much better utilized with the training is complete. The operator(s) will be able to show individual and team stats, instant replays of Arnulfo making a suspicious call, and even a replay of the PA guy announcing an opponent's recent scoring occurrence.
The four panels of the scoreboard look like giant LED television screens. Each panel is actually made up of 16 Samsung television monitors pieced together.  These phenomenal screens will also be helpful for graduation, concerts, and other events at the VanNoord Arena.
I am told future enhancements at the VNA will be translating the announcing during all games with Hope to Dutch and the concession stands will serve oliebollen during those games. There will also be busses available to bring our friends from Holland to campus so they don't have to deal with stoplights and other menacingly modern devices.  No stone unturned when it comes to inclusiveness.

+k from me on that one wiz!

Friendly reminder to Pick Em players that there are 4 games to pick for tomorrow, Olivet/Alma and Kalamazoo/Trine start at 3pm, Adrian/Calvin at 5:30, and Albion/Hope at 7:30
