Quote from: HOPEful on February 10, 2022, 03:37:54 PMI picked up three negative karma for either laughing at sac's long metaphor or suggesting Trine has the best livestream in the MIAA. My guess... is one was from the latter and the other two from my calvin friends that just realized they haven't given me negative karma in a minute and it was overdue. My positive karma is still slightly higher than my negative, so it probably was overdue.

This post is the MIAA board equivalent of taping a "KICK ME" sign to your own back. ;)

Not just the MIAA equivalent - I learned YEARS ago that complaining anywhere about karma is among the fastest ways to get smited ever invented! ::)

Me too! But I like to poke the bear. And it wasn't a complaint.

OK! ;D  I like your style!

But after 50 years of poking the bear, I've gotten tired of the claw marks. :(

What are the tie breakers to determine seeding for the MIAA tournament?

I think we might luck out and everyone completes their schedules.  A few of these would need interpretations without a full double round-robin.

1.  Head-to-head
2.  combined record vs team ahead in standings
3.  record against individual teams in descending standings
4.  total conference road wins
5.  road record against each team start at top
6.  record in 2nd half of season
7.  in-region win total
8.  coin toss

Trine's two wins over Albion are HUGE for them.  Obviously if Calvin beats Trine, that becomes a big tie-break for Calvin.

Thanks

So anyway, I'm pretty sure it hit the sprinkler head in the center of the fairway which lays on a downslope.
But was it predestined to hit that sprinkler?

On a more basketball related note, Calvin at Trine tomorrow is just a HUGE game for both teams. A win by Calvin in Angola puts them in the driver seat for the conference. A Trine win and there's just a massive log jam up at the top.

Huge indeed.  Massey predicts a 67-64 Trine win.  That 3 point difference is essentially what Massey gives home teams.  Should be a great game.  Oh, and I LOVE log jam on van der Meulen beschuit rusk  :)

A huge game in the regular season conference race but just how huge I suppose depends on how much value you place on a regular season championship. I don't meant to poo-poo it at all, it's just that this is such a unique year how the teams have shaped up that I can see any of the top four earning the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and I wouldn't call it an upset for any of the four.

Current Massey ranks
Calvin - 30
Trine - 40
Hope - 43
Albion - 86

Calvin has to run a gauntlet to finish the regular season then the MIAA tournament is shaping up to be another gauntlet for someone to survive.

As a Hope fan, I'd put a great deal amount of value in hosting MIAA tournament games vs. having to travel to MTI, Kresge, or Van Noord.

I think there is a two-fold reason it matters:

1. Yes, the regular season championship means something - perhaps more to the players & coaches than to us

2. Home court advantage through the tournament - which Massey and others equate to an approximate 3 point advantage

In the last 6 MIAA Tournaments, the semi-final/final host has only won once.  Trine, last year.

Its been 5 years since Hope hosted, 7 years since Calvin hosted.

BIG rivalry game for Alma tomorrow. They travel to Kresge to take on Albion. These last four league games have huge implications on their seeding in the tournament. Thankfully, the MIAA expanded the tournament so everyone gets in (this should be the case every year, but that's another thread for another time), but the seeding scenarios will be quite intense these next few games for the entire league!

Fun fact: Ryan Clark is 1-0 at Kresge, defeating Albion in their MIAA regular season title year of 2019-20.

I very carefully worded my response to say, "manner in which the refs called a game heavily favored one team over another."

This is NOT the same as saying one sided. There were 31 called fouls in the second half compared to 16 called in the first. They were called very evenly, both halves. But the two halves themselves were extremely different.

Hope was up 11 at half. They lost by 7. The "manner in which the refs called" the second half catered to Trine's overall game much more than Hope's. You all are a finicky bunch that I swear is at times looking to be offended. I picked up three negative karma for either laughing at sac's long metaphor or suggesting Trine has the best livestream in the MIAA. My bad, I forgot how wading into the stream of creativity disturbs the bottom and brings undesirable things to the surface around here.

Sac, I thought your original post was eloquent, creative and an enjoyable read.

Make that 2-0 for Ryan Clark at Kresge! Alma DOMINATES the Brits 84-57, in control for most of the day. Cole Kleiver returns to form with a 10/17 day that results in 27 points. Jack Poling with a huge 12 points in 18 minutes on 5/5 shooting off the bench.

WOW. Scots now 2-9 in MIAA play, with games against Adrian, K and Olivet coming up this week. If they play like they did today, they could propel from the 8 seed to the 5 in a week...

A superb Calvin performance in Angola by the Knights, who win their 9th straight game and come away with a 75-64 win. Trine plays the best defense in the conference but Calvin sprinted away from a 34-28 halftime lead by taking advantage of the Thunder's constant overplay of passing lanes. Calvin's pinpoint passes led to high percentage shots and easy baskets. Morrison proved his veteran mettle with 33 points in a must-win game. Egekeze added 15, and Sensenig added 10, and was excellent off the bench. Bowman with 24 led Trine.
