Anyone remember Art Tuls, some kind of cousin of the current Mr. Basketball, nephew of Butts Kool?

He played at Calvin a little before Mark Veenstra's time. He was a terrific passer. If memory serves, in the pre-game warmup he would stand center court and pass left and right, up and down, behind his back, through his legs, to other players who would then be in position to shoot or lay it in.

If memory serves, he also led Calvin to a victory with a 40-point performance once (over Hope, not that it matters  ::))

Art Tuls was one of the most outstanding point guards that ever played in the MIAA.  His vision of the court was spectacular and his passes left defenders bewildered.  I remember watching him run Calvin's offense with Jim Vogelzang and Doug Taatjes who were also memorable players.  Hope simply did not have a chance in those days.

The MIAA website lists Jordan Rich as the Albion golf coach.......that surprised me too.  Maybe its wrong.

Stinger, unfortunately Wuskowan was a mere idea in someone's head when I played.  My first year we were at Grand Haven Golf Club and my last two at the fabulous public facility known as Winding Creek......which is not fabulous.   I had a teamate who once said about Grand Haven....."Jack Nicklaus couldn't drive the ball here"......its a little narrow.  ::)

Its great that Hope now has the premier course in the league and there are some good ones.

My favorite I only played once and that was Kent CC in Grand Rapids, Calvin moved to Watermark the next year which was known as Forest Hills prior to their big renovation.  Kalamazoo CC was a nice track, as was Lenewee CC........I don't think either is used anymore.   My favorite trip was to the mighty  Duck Lake CC at Albion since I grew up there. ;D

Little Olivet has the best golf deal with access to all the Gull Lake View courses.........East, West, Stonehedge North and South and the vastly underrated Bedford Valley their home course.  I'm not sure how much those guys play the other courses but its a pretty sweet deal.

Coach Morrison at Olivet always came up with some kids from the UP and Ontario of all places.

......and if you want a nice golf course that few have heard of try Yarrow between Kzoo and BC.  Nice new facility and a great course.

Returning to hoops........

How'd you like that sweet 5 second call in double OT with Okemos holding the ball for the last shot.  Sheesh.

....at least it wasn't Schipper.

Any idea if any of those Okemos guys will end up in the MIAA?

Kellogg Center

Lenawee CC is still Adrian's home course.

The MIAA website is correct and up to date...

3 MIAA coaches at the Class Final today.  Great game.  Tough 5 second call with about 20 seconds left on Jones who was outstanding.

Turner and VanWieren are always at the finals.

I'd guess KVS had an interest in the Tri-Unity game.

Tough loss for Stolz and his Okemos team in the Class A Final tonight.  They had their chances obviously, especially at the end of the 2nd OT, missing two shots.  Speaking of the 5 sec call, it is disappointing to see a call such as that actually decide a game.  Did anyone think it was questionable?  It happened so fast and I have not yet had a chance to see the replay.  Anyway, while it is disappointing to lose a championship game like that, they did not give up and certainly had an outstanding season.  I congratulate them on that; they have nothing to hang heads about.  I also congratulate Saginaw B.V. on their championship.  They played hard and did not give up either.

I was at the games this weekend. (I have missed 1 MHSAA championship weekend since 1985.)  The disappointing thing about the call was, the Okemos player ( jonathan jones)
was dribbling the ball away from the referee counting the 5 seconds.  Jim Schipper, the referee closest to the play, was not counting because I don't think he thought Jones was being closely guarded.  It was a great game, the way it ended was disappointing

Timmer's "Dream Job" is coaching men's varsity basketball at Calvin. That it for what's it worth. I know you were mentioning a d3hoops charity game in between the throwback Calvin-Hope game (great idea). I think we might be better off hosting a golf tourney.

Then why isn't he an assistant?  then he could learn WWKVSD

I would assume, it is because KVS has his own guys. To hire Timmer as an assistant would mean someone, who already has a job and established himself, would have to go. Unless you wanted to go Hope style and have like eighteen guys on the bench.  ;D And on the golf tourney. I bet we could have a huge Calvin-Hope four man scramble thing. Ex-players and the like that would be a blast. I actually beat Holstage and Meulenburg in a scramble at The Meadows last fall. I think we took like four of my shots all day. One last thing, I know TJ Meerman went to CMU, but I played him (well actually more like got schooled) yesterday in a 3 on 3 and that guy can ball. I really wish I would have seen him in a Calvin jersey.
"I started to look around at the fans and the team and I was sitting in the back, and I looked around and everybody was having a good time and that day, it truly made me realize what Michigan was about. It took me down, it humbled me. It taught me how to be a Michigan man instead of Jason Avant."

I was at the HS Finals too and the 5 second call on Johnathan Jones was the most ridiculous call not made by an MIAA ref ( ;)) that I've seen in several years. I had no interest in seeing either team win and only wanted to watch good high school basketball--which the A Final was--but I can tell you that Okemos got robbed. The defender was not closely guarding the play at all. Jones is a tremendous player and far too good to be playing D3 ball. I don't know where he is going to college but I thought he was easily the most exciting player at the Breslin yesterday.  I've got to believe he's not paying for his college education. I didn't see VanWieren yesterday but I did see Turner and Douma engaged in an animated chat.

oldknight and shareef:
In further review, I would agree with you on the call.  Anyway, Jones is a class guy as all the Okemos players are including their coach (as I mentioned previously).  Jones displayed much maturity when he said during post game interviews that while he was disappointed, that is the way things go and it was "end of story".  They had a great ride; also doesn't take away from SBV as both teams had a chance to win it at times.  You guys are right though; it was great, great h.s. basketball to watch.  I think this year's regionals, semifinals and finals both in college and h.s. have been among the best in years, at least as far as parity and excitement.

Jones won't have to worry about paying for college.  He is being recruited by several mid-major bb schools and will get a scholarship.  It would be great to see him in DIII though (not sure he is major DI ability, although anyone can improve even more).  Anyway, thanks for the follow-up discussion.

My guess is that KVS would be watching Andy Venema, but that's pure speculation...

Saw the MIAA well represented at the finals.....saw Hope's assistant, Jody May from Albion, Coach Turner, Olivet's coach.  Great time, I imagine to see players watching the games.

almcguirejr

I saw Tom Davelaar there on Friday.  Matt Neill was there Saturday.  Kim Elders,  Cornerstone coach, was talking to Andy Venema's parents after the game Saturday.
