Unsure if FDF was planning on running the MIAA pick'em this year, so I decided to get it jump started.
If he wants to take it back over, I would be more than happy to relinquish control. Just wanted to make sure that it was available for everyone to play!

First games are Wednesday at 7:00 PM EST, so get your picks in before then!

Thanks for taking this on!  I have a new job starting today (same company, larger global role) and just don't have the time to administer the Pick 'Em.  I will certainly try to at least play and defend my title :)

So now we can blame all global problems on FDF?

As long as they're color-related.

How good of a coach is Greg Mitchell and should Hope be considering looking for a new coach?
Just to be clear, Dutchfan, you're asking about the coach whose team last year won the league, won the league tournament, beat Calvin three times, has recruited some exciting new players, and has scheduled and played a tough pre-league schedule (including beating two WIAC teams) . . . but recently has been playing without its preseason all-American?

I think DF for some reason has a dislike of Coach Mitchell:

Is it time for Hope to potentially part ways with Coach Mitchell?

Since he asked that time, Hope has gone 28-12 (0.700) and accomplished those items you higlighted pointlem, including a 3-1 record vs the WIAC.

HOPEful

Anyone know Evan Thomas' status? Any chance he plays tonight?

I don't give Hope much of a chance without him...
Let's go Dutchmen!

No inside info from me, but I'd be shocked if Evan played tonight.  Yes he was dressed and warmed up last week, but he did it mostly one handed and I think caution here makes sense so you don't jeopardize the entire season if he comes back to soon.

Massey predictions for the opening night of conference play:

Alma 76
Kalamazoo 77

Hope 64
Trine 69

Adrian 74
Olivet 80

Albion 65
Calvin 74

Looking forward to seeing the Brits in person again tonight!

In preparation for MIAA play, I thought I'd mention that Albion offers online ticketing now.  This should link to it:  https://acbritons.hometownticketing.com/embed/all but the links are on the gobrits.com schedule as well.  I think there's a small discount compared to the price at the door.  Are any of the other MIAA schools using online ticketing?

Also, on Saturday, the Kresge court will be named for Coach Turner!

Here's an article about the Coach Turner and the dedication:

Event details:

Personally, I sure think "Historic Kresge Gymnasium's Legendary Mike Turner Court" has a nice ring to it.  :)  Go Brits!

Is it weird that I already thought they had done that.    If it ever comes to pass the Turner Gymnasium sounds better.

Alma, Olivet and I believe Adrian are all using hometown ticket.  Don't quote me on Adrian though.  I used it quite a bit last March for both MIAA and MHSAA games, super easy.

Hope and Trine now in double OT. Evan Thomas is back for Hope...or was he already?

A painful loss for Hope tonight, with 3 point leads with 3 seconds to go on two occasions, followed by Trine's heroic long 3-point shots. (Twice in one game Hope faced the perennial question: Should a team with a 3-point lead foul with 4 or 5 seconds left?)

A super exciting game that left TU Angola . . . and Connor Jones (44 points) . . . smiling

After hitting 17 of 19 first half free throws, Hope made 17 of 33 second half free throws. What Hope would give for just one of those last minutes' misses by high-percentage shooters. (As I watched the missed free throws I wondered about the referees and Trine AD allowing two kids standing at the baseline to pound long, distracting color tubes that nearly reached the playing area at the edge of the paint under the basket. Should fans' distracting objects be kept beyond the baseline paint area?)

A crucial moment happened with 1:50 remaining in regulation time, as Hope led 65 to 60 and then cheered when Evan Thomas made a basket and was knocked to the floor, seemingly giving Hope a 7 or 8-point lead. Alas, the shot was waved off by a travel? call.

On the bright side, Thomas was back, playing 37 minutes with 24 points. Even with his shooting a bit rusty (with six missed free throws), Hope is a better team with him, and can take heart from knowing that they played well enough to beat a ranked team on its floor.

11 for 25 from the free throw line. Yes. That's. Eleven. For. Twenty. Five. Almost was bad enough to kill Calvin's win over a quick, game, hard-working, but undersized Albion squad that looks to be a lot better than the 3-8 record they had coming into tonight's contest at VNA. Albion has lost a lot of close games this season against quality opponents. No one should be eager to play them.

Ken Thomas and Fred Garland led Albion with 20 and 19. Thomas is a warrior, gathering 7 steals, and battling Jalen Overway every possession. Overway scored 18 and grabbed 15 rebounds, but seemed more frustrated than usual, by the physical play.

Eggekeze led all scorers with 26, and created havoc by anticipating several Albion passes, that led to easy Knights baskets. But yet again, it was Marcus Bult (11 points) who showed veteran moxie in a tight game, twice tonight, hitting a triple in the final 3 minutes of play, to create the breathing space Calvin needed in their 72-67 win. The Wheaton Academy grad is as reliable a player as Bill Sall has on his roster.

Speaking of Coach Sall, he still seems to be searching for the right starting combo that will make him comfortable. Varnado was on the bench to begin the game, with Koby VanderWoude in the starting lineup, though he only played 9 minutes. Luka Ressler came off the bench to log 22 minutes and a pretty solid performance against constant Albion pressure, scoring 10 points, and dishing 4 nifty assists.

My eye glasses must not be working well. I didn't see Jody May anywhere in the arena tonight. Does anyone know why he wasn't there, or is my vision totally gone?

Trine 89 Hope 84 2OT

Was not expecting the high energy, high intensity and extremely enjoyable game to just be at in Angola.  A million things happened in this one and every one of them important.

Trine's fight and tenacity were something and you just had to applaud it.  I mean really, down 2 possessions once under a minute to go and once just over a minute to go in OT and hitting two game tying 3's ,  4 starters fouling out and somehow finding the energy and personnel to pull out that game in double overtime.  Bravo.

Hope will feel they gave this one away, because they really did.  Had the game clinching FTs in the hands of their best Ft shooter twice which never should have even come to the first one with a 9-19 team FT performance in the 2nd half and 3-7 in the first overtime.   On top of that a handful of bad errors that simply gave Trine a pathway to overtime and double overtime.

1.   Connor Jones was incredible
2.   Evan Thomas was maybe 80%, but sure nice to have him back
3.   Hope's bench played really well, which is now extended by one with Thomas back
4.   Hope's inconsistent 3 point shooting and propensity for turnovers eventually came back to bite them

Its been awhile since I watched a game where both teams looked tired halfway through the 2nd.   At one stoppage with about 8 min left everyone just stood around catching their breathe, Trine was exhausted, they subbed and their subs looked exhausted.  It was here Hope had the chance to maybe land the knockout blow and just couldn't do it.

Hope:  Thomas 24, McKenzie 17, Wiegerink 16
Trine:   Jones 44, Cox 16, Pahl 12

Here's the video link if you want to watch one heck of D3 basketball game.   Max lead was I think 7 btw.
