The amount of times I've seen the intentional miss work like that vs. failing miserably is a low, low percentage. Then to kick it out and nail the deep, open three. Heartbreaker indeed.

Last night was just brutal for Hope. Quillan was in foul trouble much of the game and Evan had 0 points and 2 rebounds in 19 minutes of play. The team shot 2 for 16 from three, but most of those were garbage shots that Trine was happy to let Hope take.

My optimism that Evan is going to eventually get healthy and this team is going to figure it out and turn it around this season is quickly dissipating. Getting bounced in the MIAA semis is feeling more and more like the probable outcome for this team.

I am tentatively planning on making my first trip to Calvin and Van Noord Arena Saturday.  It's a '2 for 1' day with WBB Thunder/Knights squaring off at 1pm and the MBB game is at 3pm.  That will leave Kalamazoo and Alma as the only 2 venues I haven't been to.

I'm hoping the Thunder play well, Calvin's offense can be scary good and that is the difference between us and the Knights as we just don't have the number of scoring options that Calvin has.  Defensively we are pretty much at the same level.

Hope's home woes in MIAA play is really quite disgusting (unless your the visiting team I guess).  Not only is Hope's offense poor at De Vos, but it's defense as well.  Can't sya I've ever seen anything like this before.

Home Games - record is 2-3
Hope Stats - .379 FG, .215 3FG, .635 FT
Opp Stats - .483 FG, .320 3FG, .627 FT

Road Games - record is 5-1 (double OT loss @ Trine)
Hope Stats - .426 FG, .358 3FG, .794 FT
Opp Stats - .395 FG, .369 3FG, .706 FT

So Hope on the road is +4.7 FG%, +14.3 3PT%, and +15.9 FT%

Do MIAA rules allow a higher seeded team in the tournament to chose to play on the road versus hosting?

I sure HOPE so.  Calvin will choose DeVos.  The Knights would love to play there again.

Jalen Overway has a chance to lead the league in points and rebounds.   Evan Thomas  did that last year, but its something that hasn't happened a bunch.  He would also be the first Fr to lead the league in scoring since Anthony Jones did it at Alma in 2004, prior to that it was Mark Veenstra in 1974 and not much before that Freshman weren't eligible so its probably just Veenstra and Jones to lead the league in scoring as Fr.

So you're anticipating Hope makes the MIAA final - I'm good with that.

Interesting.

How many freshmen have been league MVP?

Edit:  Mark Veenstra wasleague MVP four times, so there is at least one.

Congratulations to the Calvin Knights on today's 67-56 victory over the Trine Thunder, clinching the 2022-23 conference title with two games left to play in the league season.
The Knights were led by Jalen Overway with 20 points, 16 in the first half. Marcus Bult poured in 14 and Owen Varnado added 10.
With the win, the Knights are assured homecourt advantage in the post-season MIAA tourney.

Attendance is listed at 2007 in the box score. I don't think attendance has been that high at a non-Hope game for several years.

It was nice to see a solid attendance today to watch Calvin's 67-56 conference-season clincher over Trine. Attendance numbers have been trending up this year, partly due to folks finally noticing the Knights have a pretty good club (we're slow learners on the Knollcrest Campus), and partly due to people putting COVID concerns in the rear view mirror.

Both Trine and Calvin play excellent defense, and that showed again this afternoon. As TUAngola feared, the difference proved to be Calvin's ability to show a steadier, more diverse offense. The Knights just seem to have more scoring options than Trine, led by Overway who netted 20 really tough points. Bill Sall's freshmen class has been improving in increments all season long, and it's really difficult to see them as freshmen any more. They've been playing college basketball for four months, have competed in 23 college games (24 if you include the exhibition game vs Ferris), and the Knights offense has been making fewer mistakes in recent games.

The game was really decided in a six minute stretch when the game was tied at 20, and Calvin exploded for 16 straight points, to put the Thunder on their heels the balance of the game. After a short Trine run at the start of the second frame, Calvin quickly reestablished double digit control the rest of the way. In addition to Overway's solid performance, Bult scored 14 and Varanado 10. But to me, the unsung player of the game was the ever-steady freshmen guard, Luka Ressler, who made all 3 of his floor shots on his way to 9 points, displayed an excellent floor game, and was a constant pest on defense snatching 3 steals and blocking one shot. Cox was very good for Trine, leading his team with 19.
