Olivet has clinched the #4 seed in the MIAA Tournament. I believe Alma has been eliminated.

Adrian, Albion, and Kalamazoo are all still alive and all in contention for the #5 seed.

Tiebreaker stuff:
Albion, Kalamazoo, and Adrian all split.
Adrian is 2-0 vs. Alma.
Adrian has not beaten any of the top 4.
Albion's win over Hope is good unless Kalamazoo also gets a win over Hope in which case Kalamazoo's win over Olivet is good.

Hope shoots a miserable 1 for 17 from behind the 3pt. line . . .

Only slightly worse than Calvin.

As a neutral party, I thought it was a fun game.

Hope 65 Calvin 57 F

What do I know?

Its like all the good bits and pieces there all year showed up more frequently and mix that with a 40 minute high energy defensive effort Hope gave themselves a chance to win and they pulled it off.  I felt pretty down at halftime because I felt Hope should have been up 15, was sure Calvin would surge ahead but Hope countered every move.

Tanner Wiegerink made 3 plays right in the middle of half two, a ridiculous put back and one, Hope's 1 and only 3 point shot, followed by a foot on the line 2, a 3 point game went to 9 and you could just feel maybe just maybe it was going to really happen.  Calvin never really mounted a good charge again except for the desperation shots that always go in.

Hope can play a little defense too, when they want to,   just not quite at Calvin and Trine's level.  That's actually been there frequently this year.

This was the kind of game to remind that rivalries are great, esp this one, and you just really never know.  Lost by 32 at home, could have been worse, never trailed the next time on the road.  Get out of here with that.

Hope:  Dykhouse 22, Thomas 13, Wiegerink 12
Calvin:  Egekeze 22, Overway 12

Wednesday's other scores:
Trine 72 Kalamazoo 45
Olivet 81 Albion 79
Adrian 86 Alma 79

+/- isn't really relevant anymore, just the standings

Calvin  12-1
Trine   11-2
Hope   9-4
Olivet  6-7
Albion 4-9
Adrian 4-9
Kzoo   3-10
Alma   3-10

Calvin #1 seed and bye
Trine  #2 seed and bye
Hope  #3 seed
Olivet  #4 seed

"chalk" puts Albion at #5, Adrian at #6

A 4 way tie for 5th is a possibility and would be super fun to break.
3-way ties get broken in a bad way so I don't know how that would work out.
(if Kzoo hadn't beaten Albion this would be settled like I said it would be a week ago)

Semi-finals next Friday #4 Olivet/#5 at #1 Calvin,  #3 Hope/ #6 at # Trine

Games remaining:
Calvin:    @Alb
Trine:      ADR
Hope:     KZO
Olivet:    @Alm
Albion:    CAL
Adrian:    @Trine
Alma:      OLI
Kzoo:      @Hope

Wow. Calvin didn't even make Drew's updated projections.

The writing was kind of on the wall when Heidelberg got the 7th spot in this week's regional rankings over Calvin. If the committee had already determined Calvin's resume wasn't good enough to even be ranked ahead of Heidelberg then it's easy to see how taking a loss drops them out of the picture. Still think they got that wrong, but now the ranking data will surely not be shifting into Calvin's favor.

Anyway, I completely forgot to go in and watch the big game. How did it come out?

Not well. And in a fashion similar to that of my hero DK, I screwed up, somehow managing to schedule a school budget review meeting the same evening as a Rivalry game. Slowly but surely, my angst over my foolish decision diminished, as I received "helpful" text messages from a fellow board poster, informing me that I wasn't missing a thing.

A p.s. to last night's Hope-Calvin . . . kudos to Calvin Sports Information for a great game program, filled with interesting information and player/team stats.

How refreshing to have Brett Bakita and Drew Neitzel on the call.

Last night's attendance of 3,986 is larger than any home game for Western Michigan this season.

Happy Calvin Guy

It was also the largest attendance for any game @Calvin in over five years, not to mention any home game @Hope ever.

It's nice of Hope to help you get close to 80% capacity once every 5 years.

Absolutely. They're doing a great job. Such a huge upgrade from Tom Clearly and Ryan Terpstra.
