I keep hearing "University" is important in recruiting foreign students since so much of the world operates on the British system where a lot of high schools are named 'college.'

I don't believe Olivet is bringing in foreign students in droves.

[edit] Although I suppose this change removes the last barrier to that.

I think this was true, but is no longer.

I think this is more about a president or chancellor growing his on list of accomplishments so he or she is ready for the next job, but I am cynical in that way.

I think its ok to start wondering how long the MIAA will continue to exist or whether it or its members remain in this division.  Maybe years away but stuffs happening that make you think.  But that might just be me. :-\

Cynically, I think the move to Division II is also often about a president or chancellor growing his or her list of accomplishments.

And survival for some.  D2 also, allegedly, brings in more donations to the endowments in some cases, which I am skeptical of, but can also believe.

I think you're much more likely to see a split of MIAA schools going D2 and NAIA.  But, just me.

D2 is also (much?) more expensive to fund, so you need to run faster just to stay in the same place. IMO if your plan to survive as an institution is to move from D3 to D2, you're already toast.

Maryville (MO) moved to Division II and has been more prosperous and competitive than ever, but I am not sure if that is common. Maybe they used it to improve fundraising.

I still surprises me that the now closed Iowa Wesleyan thought moving back to the NAIA was a good idea.

From an AQ standpoint the league has some breathing room to weather a couple closures/defections before tournament access threatens action, though I doubt a smaller league is desirable from a league and remaining institution standpoint. I know there have been a couple small rumblings about some potential D2 moves but I always figured that was more about due diligence and contingency planning. It would seem Olivet and Albion are the two current members in the most tenuous of positions for their long-term viability but I have no idea how close the REALLY hard discussions might be, or if that list is accurate.

Geographically there aren't many obvious targets for new members, aside from the northern stretches of the HCAC. I'm not sure how attractive that would really be for either side.

Re: endowments, I took a quick look at the top at all endowments >$1B amongst US colleges and universities. My quick scan shows that that 100% of public institutions with endowments >$1B compete at D1 level, which feels intuitive. But amongst the 80 private institutions listed with endowments >$1B, 32 of them compete at D3 level, and zero of them compete at D2 level (My count might be off by a few since it was a quick scan). I don't see the case that moving from D3 to D2 increases giving to the endowment.

Congratulations to the Trine women's softball team, winners of the Super Regional Championship today, 7-2 over Concordia Wisconsin.  Heading back to the NCAA DIII Softball College World Series next week in Texas for the second consecutive year, where they were runners-up last year to Christopher Newport.  Lets bring home Trine's first ever team NCAA National Championship girls!

Calvin's MBB 2023-2024 schedule it out:

https://calvinknights.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule

Very challenging non-conference schedule including games against 3 from the WIAC; La Crosse, Stevens Point, and Platteville, the latter as part of the Trine holiday tournament held between Christmas and New Years.  That tourney also includes a very good Berry GA squad.  Other notable games are Wheaton and St Norbert plus two games in the Great Lakes Invitational.

I believe Calvin's opponents in the GLI (hosted at Wittenberg) were Marietta and LaRoche. It will be a very challenging schedule -- and all D3! No more Grace (Bible Tigers) Christian U!!
