Thanks to a note from OC_SID I now know that Olivet does have a JV roster (guess I can't trust my old eyes so much anymore).  I have updated the two posts about the recruits and unknown newcomers to reflect that.

So no Vince Overway for Calvin on Friday?

He played in the final 10-minute segment but not in the first two 20-minute halves.

I didn't stay for the final 10-minute period, but I did see him play in the second half. Or at least it seemed so to me -- the jersey numbers actually in use didn't always match the roster jersey numbers.

This is second year in a row I was lucky enough to happen across a Albion basketball scrimmage after a home football game.  It certainly brightened my mood after the football game against Trine.

This was an intrasquad, so a guaranteed win for Albion-- Purple vs. Gray.  They were wearing practice jerseys with different numbers, but I think I identified everyone after asking around.  Based on my (relatively poor) scorekeeping, Kam Mayes and Phil Ragan were the top scorers.  I think everyone played except BJ Hunter, who appeared to be injured but not sure on the severity or timeline.

They got some feedback from the refs, before, during, and after, which seemed like a good opportunity.

The Brits also did an extra 8 minute period, starting some of the players who hadn't played as much (so possibly JV, though there are usually some players who play both)--  Spybrook, Germany, Burnett, Clark, Delaney, King, Ray, Stadler, Woolery, and if you're counting along, one more that I apparently didn't write down.

It's exciting to have an Albion resident, Nauvion Bennett, on the team (though now Albion students attend Marshall High School).  I think he's the first one in the time that I've been watching.

It sounded like the Brits were going to play two away scrimmages against other teams, this past weekend and next weekend.

Looking forward to seeing more Brits basketball soon!

Hard to believe Albion High School played for state championship in 1991 against Detroit Country Day and Chris Weber at The Palace.  Albion had Monter Glasper who went to Iowa and 6-10 David Washington played for Minnesota.

I tried hard to think of an Albion College player from Albion but can't.

Known Exhibitions:

Oct 29  Alma at Central Michigan 4pm
Nov 1  Kalamazoo at  Western Michigan 7pm
Nov 2  Olivet at Davenport  7:45
Nov 3  Calvin at Ferris State 5pm
Nov 3  Chicago at Hope 7pm
Nov 4  Olivet at Lourdes 3pm
Nov 4  Adrian at Concordia(MI) 6pm

This weekend concludes the exhibition portion of the MIAA schedule.  I have not seen boxscores from the Kzo/WMU or Alma/CMU games but the D1 guys won pretty handily in both.   I don't think last nights Olivet/Davenport was anything more than a scrimmage since it doesn't appear on either teams schedule anymore if it took place at all.

Based on last year's data, Massey predicts:
Chicago @ Hope, 68-71
Calvin @ Ferris St, 68-80
Olivet @ Lourdes, 70-82
Adrian @ Concordia(MI), 70-75

Calvin led for the majority of the game. In the first half, the most frequent score was Calvin up by 2. They ended the half with a little run; the halftime score was 45-37.

Ferris St whittled away at that lead through the second half and tied the game with 5-10 minutes left. With a minute or two left Calvin was down 3. Calvin had a couple of intentional fouls at the end. The final score was 78-69 for Ferris St.

More fouls got called on Calvin than on Ferris St in the second half--it was 11-5 at one point, probably ended about 15-8. Some Calvin players looked tired -- it was a physical game, especially in the block.

Three players who didn't play last year contributed--Riemersma started, Ewing got quite a few minutes, and freshman Jordan Scott got some time in the first half.

Overway had 22 points and Ressler 15 at one point near the end of the game.

I have watched Calvin/Hope basketball for 53 consecutive years.  One of those games was my favorite.

Not surpised - of course it wasn't one that really "mattered" was it?

Concordia 69  Adrian 68     this was a real one for Concordia, ex for Adrian.  Of note, Adrian started Freshman Braylon Dickerson at PG, Fr.  Darius Welch came off the bench for 11 pts.   These two are going to end up being 2 of the better Fr. in the league.

Lourdes 86  Olivet 48
real one for Lourdes, ex for Olivet.   Lourdes is the preseason favorite in the WHAC.  I learned today they're coached by former Buckeye and NBA player Dennis Hopson.

First game that counts is tomorrow night with Kzoo hosting Grace Christian.

Nov. 8 is the first date for countable competition, so that's looking like an exhibition for Kalamazoo (and they have 24 games that count). Unless they somehow have an exemption?

Honestly it doesn't matter though, since it's an out-of-division game, it won't count for or against anyone's tournament resume.

Yeah I was curious about that.  I got a note saying game was postponed but now it not, so maybe they play maybe they don't.  Maybe it counts, maybe it doesn't.

If it's on the 7th, it doesn't count. They might've thought Tues was the start date - a number of schools made that mistake this year - but there's no waiver for that.
