MIAA is 10-10 overall,  9-10 for D3 SOS purposes.  Some really good but tough matchups this weekend

TUAngola

Trine 79 Franklin 58

Home opener in Angola at the MTI Center.  Trine with some nice play tonight and also some a little sloppy.  We had spurts where we just dominated and other times where we turned it over way too much.  Team defensive rebounding needs work too, allowed many second looks.  Shot well in the first half and cooled off a bit in the second.  Player of the game was easily Aidan Smylie.  He has a non-stop motor.  He doesn't have to score to be effective, led the team with 8 boards and 6 assists.

Trine: F Garland 20, Cox 14, Moore 12, Smylie 10, C Garland 10
Franklin: Flanagan 12, King 10, Hendricks 10

Huge game for Calvin vs. Marietta at 3pm today. This could be Calvin's toughest match of the season.

Marietta is not ranked in the d3hoops.com preseason poll, but they started out at #17 in Massey and are currently ranked #5. They just knocked off d3hoops.com #1 Christopher Newport.

A win, or even a competitive game for Calvin would be very encouraging.

Massey should not be taken seriously at this point in the season. Right now it's badly polluted with irrelevant past-seasons data that needs time to be weeded out by the continuously modifying database used by the site's algorithm. That's not a knock on Marietta, which, as you say, may turn out to be Calvin's toughest game in the regular season. But current Massey is not a good confirmation of that theory.

Marietta was picked 3rd in the OAC behind John Carroll and Mt. Union.  The OAC is likely to be extremely strong this season particularly among its top 4 or 5.  Its a terrific match-up that will have pretty big ranking implications down the line.

Well, I suppose we'll soon see which seems more accurate, Massey #5 or d3hoops.com unrated...Massey has the advantage of knowing about Marietta's last two wins.

Again, I'm not saying that Marietta isn't good. I'm simply saying that mid-November Massey is a poor indicator of Marietta's relative strength.

Calvin takes down Marietta at Wittenberg, 68-51. Calvin didn't shoot all that well (43%), but Marietta shot miserably (25%). Egekeze had a double/double with 14 and 10, while Overway netted 20 and grabbed 8 boards.

I didn't realize it last night, but with Trine's win over Franklin it was Coach Brooks Miller's 200th career win.

Congratulations Coach!!

I'm going to say the d3hoops.com poll was more accurate here...

Alma knocks off Heidelberg 86-84 at the Wheaton tournament! Big MIAA result there.

Just announced: The 2024 Great Lakes Invitational will be hosted by Calvin and will also feature Hope, John Carroll, Marietta, St. John's (MN), Emory, UW-La Crosse and Johns Hopkins.
Another great GLI field!

A comfortable 74-54 win by Calvin over LaRoche. The Knights haven't really clicked on offense yet this season (turnover issues), but their defense has been tremendous, leading them to three straight double-digit wins to begin the year. Egekeze, Overway and Bult all had 17 to lead Calvin. Nice to see Marcus come to life after he started his November with two unremarkable games.

Trine eeks out a 76-70 win over Baldwin Wallace.  BW had a 62-56 lead with 8 minutes left and then our defense finally started to play better and our offense fed off the defense and finished the game on a 20-8 run.  BW has some talented players, but are not deep.  I think they only subbed in two off the bench.  They outhustled us for most of the game, save the last 8 minutes.  Our rebounding needs to get better, this is two games in a row where the opponent was better on the glass.  Giving up 20 offensive rebounds is no good.  Ray Ellington for BW was outstanding.  I'm not sure we'll see a better guard offensively who can create his own shots.  His step back 3 pointers are amazing.  They have a freshman post player, AJ Pestello, who has the body of senior, he outmuscled our senior post players which was disappointing.

So far defensively we have some issues to clean up, not nearly as good defensively as we historically have been. Aidan Smylie has been the only bright spot on defense.  He led the team again with 12 boards and 4 steals.  He had a huge steal and jam in the last 30 seconds that gave us a 7 point lead.  Offensively we have a lot more quickness than in years past, the Garland brothers, and Moore have added another dimension that we haven't had.

Have a week of practice before the next game a week from today against Ohio Wesleyan.

Trine: C Garland 26, F Garland 17, Cox 10
BW: Ellington 27, Pestello 15, Driscoll 10
