This team was awesome on paper, and by record, but still had their issues.
It was a super season, but ended with another "what-if" for the history books. C'est la vie...

that's my point

And Pat--didn't you write a whole article about Hope getting their banner?  The bracket is not the issue--If you can't beat them in the early stages, you can't beat them later on, either

I believe that a sentence to that effect did appear in our tournament preview.

In said preview I also anticipated Hope hosting the sectionals, which if I'm not mistaken, did not happen.

Considering that the team Hope lost to went on to trail the national title game for only 2.1 seconds, I think it's reasonable to think Hope would have been competitive in that game as well.

I know this is off topic and on the wrong board but this is the offseason anyway with less traffic on all boards. Some of you probably know that Ron Schipper, the long time legendary football coach at Central College (Iowa) died a couple of weeks ago. My family and I knew Coach Schippper and he really was one of the great coaches in DIII in any sport--a great motivator and innovator with a true love for his student athletes and a person who understood the value of college athletics within the context of the mission of DIII institutions. We need more coaches like him at the DIII level. Skip's only weakness was a rather mysterious loyalty to the MIAA school from which he graduated.  ;)

Hmmm, a football player and coach who preferred Hope over Calvin - how strange   ;D

FDF -

I was thinking the same thing.

But then I could hear the cheers, "We don't have football, but we have banners and VERY FEW transfers" ....   :D

See you and Civic Minded tonight?

Lost to the national runner-up on that team's home floor. Should have gone further? Perhaps, but the bracket didn't really allow for that.

No question ... Hope is, and will be, one of the best teams in NCAA D3 and, because of how things go in D3, they go down early.

It ain't gonna happen, for two reasons that loom very large in the consciousness of D3's institutional poobahs: 1) cost; and 2) proximity to campus.

The same reason D1 track & field has regional qualifing meets while D2 and D3 don't, too much money to travel all those athletes and too much money to keep the athletes on campus longer (into the first week in June).

Oakland's trying to get Dex to walk on, but he wants to play. Looking at Hope, Albion, Olivet, Wooster. Good player, good guy.

Thats a combination of 5 schools I would never have guessed in a million years.  Olivet in the same sentence with Wooster?

Mr. Soderberg has a fairly impressive list of recruits.

Ha, I know. Dex wants to be a history major, I understand, which makes me like him even more.

Still getting a mixed message on Mantel to Calvin; he's playing open gyms there, but also hearing if that elusive DI offer comes, he could be gone.

I think part of it might be a money thing. Albion and Wooster can throw more money at him than Hope can, I'm not sure about Olivet. Someone go ask him...

I just found out today that Hope and Calvin's prized recruit John Mantel has committed to Calvin. Apparently GVW's speech at his high school basketball banquet wasn't enough for the 6'8 forward.  ;D
