QuoteWhat is the thought about how quickly these news kids can contribute?

Mantel should play a lot, if not start, immediately.  It'll be interesting how KVS handles his stud recruit competing with an established SR (Snoeyink) at the PF spot.

With a 4-man rotation of Meckes, Snoeyink, DeVries and Mantel, I don't know how much we'll see Engelsma and Schuster this year, but they're important guys for the coming years.

If Veltema's athletic enough to play the 2, he's got a chance to start right away too, IMO.  I think Tyler Zoerhof is the starting SF, but the 2, with Micah Chappell seeming to be the man, is a bit more open to competition.  Calvin could be really big - Veldhouse 6'2", Veltema 6'5", Zoerhof 6'6", Mantel 6'8" and Meckes 6'6".

I'm curious if they'll want Englesma to play JV for a year to get him some minutes.  Knowing KVS, it's unlikely, but it may not hurt to get him some minutes.

I got the voicemail stating it last night and confirmed it this mourning.

Shareef23: I thought you were a Knight fan but if you confirmed it this "mourning" I guess that means that you root for the Dutch.  ;)  :D ;D ::)

Perhaps that is the Canadian spelling?

Ya my bad. Hmmm, seems to be I know a little more than most think. And Wolverine (Nice name!), your combo guard is on the way, hopefully. Hmmm, the Dutch faithful are mighty quiet. I think their the ones who want to talk about transfers.  Cuz they don't seem to have much else to talk about.  ;D Rack me.

Care to share any more than that?  Even marginal guys like Will Bruinsma and Jon Visser burned Calvin this year (although I can't confirm they even really wanted Visser, it just makes sense to me).  Overall, I just worry that we'll get into consistently pulling in un-balanced classes.

Regardless, I'm very happy with this year's class.  I tend to be a "the sky is falling" type of Calvin fan, especially when we have some bad years vs. Hope.  But this class has bought KVS a few more years in my mind.   ;D

realist

WK: I wouldn't worry to much about the ones who got away.  Several were more than a little intimidated by the academics.  We wouldn't want Calvin to get into the Hope (less) situation of having so much talent they could do everything, but win the games when they really count!! ;D :D ;)
If you look back over the players that have gone to Calvin over the last 10 years it does appear that some years looked more stacked than others, but not all kids were even involved in b-ball after the first year or two.  Turnover of players is rather high.
Once conference play started this past season we heard few references to Hoekstra, and what's his name?  More important is how quickly KVS can get these guys into the system, and playing their assigned roles.

Yeah I was a bit distraught at the beginning of the year that neither Hoekstra nor Brian Roelofs were going to play.  Either would have started the year as the starting PF over Snoeyink.  Calvin ended up doing alright, but really could have used the low-post presence that Hoekstra could have provided.

As to the academics, c'mon, it wasn't that hard.  I never had too much trouble that a few all-nighters and long Saturdays in the library couldn't solve.

Some info from the Lansing State Journal's All-Area Team.

Craig Everts, Grand Ledge  6-4 ...averaged 15.8 pts, 6.2 rbs and 42 3's.  Played Center,  all CAAC-1 (Capital Area Athletic Conference, Division 1)  The others from this team are headed to D1 and D2 schools----ALBION

Sam Snow, Leslie 6-4 F...averaged 17 pts. 6.2 rbs 2.5 assts, 2.4 steals.  ADRIAN

Others still decideing

Mike Chrisman, Haslett 6-3 F, 10.3 pts, 5.8 rbs, All-CAAC-3 1st Team.  Listed as D3 prospect

Deven Tarrant, Bath 6-6 F, 14.4 pts, 7rbs, 2.4 assists, Class C all-state HM.  Listed as D2 or D3 prospect

Dan Genther, Laingsburg 6-3 F. 17.6 pts, 10.1 rbs, Class C all-state HM is a D3 prospect

Sorry those listed as prospects didn't have what schools they were looking at, maybe Mr. Bell can fill in the blanks.

The Everts kid should be good for Albion, he did well playing way out of position against the big school division in the capital area which included State runner-up Okemos and Holt (who only lost 2 to Okemos)

Wolverine, I'll tell you when the time is right. Which means when he commits somewhere. It's not someone you'll expect so it's not even worth speculating on. I don't believe Calvin was ever in it for Visser or even recruited him. And Bruinsma took the money which is hard to pass when he gets cash for both sports. Same for Zwiers, I can't blame a kid for taking it. But this is a great class and has the chance of getting even better as their are still some kids left out there.

The size of the incoming Calvin players has certainly been mentioned but no one seems to be saying anything about Tim Katt.  We didn't get to see a whole lot from him but I like what I did see.  He is a guy with decent size who seems to be able to get some tough boards over bigger guys.  With Meckes, Bear, and Snoeyink all Seniors next year I was becoming a bit concerned over the future of the frontcourt but things seem bright.

Just thought I'd passt his along. Brandon Voorhees will be attneding some NAIA D1 school in Kansas. I heard this today from a friend who had spoke with him the day before. The name of the school escaped him. With all the c-stone talk latly I thought some might like to know.

It will also be interesting to see where Koetsier fits into things as well.

1. Veldhouse, Smith
2. Chappel, Veltema, Duff
3. Koetsier, Zoerhof
4, 5 Snoeyink, Meckes, Bear, Katt, Mantal, Schuster, Englesma, Pearcy

Those big men are going to have an interesting time trying out. That will be a dog fight.

Devin Tarrant is going to Aquinas.

He didn't want to play in the MIAA? Now, for reporting that fact, will you cowardly little girls subract more karma? God, No!!!

SBell

Now this one should be really good for some karma. I've heard there's an MIAA school that's tryiing to "rediscover" black basketball players after a 35-year hiatus ... for the cynical reason that a backlog of applicants at the school makes it harder to get financial aid for its typical recruit. But if it is a minority, voila!
