Aargh. So much for adding regional games. At least Tri-State counts as regional next year.

Which games, aside from the obvious league games, will still be considered in-region?

Pat-which would you change?

The Dec. 6 and Dec. 16 games would be the ones I'd change.

Only potential Wooster tourney opponents could be in region (barring a Hope matchup in the bank tourney). The CCIW teams are non-region, as seen in previous years. Hopefully Wooster has opponents that are in-region for Calvin.

Calvin has posted a schedule for next season.  I dont know how subject it will be to change but it does confirm the tournament at Wooster and lists the MIAA-CCIW challenge hosted by Carthage.
http://www.calvin.edu/sports/mbasket/schedule.htm

Someone besides Jeff Febus must've input the Calvin schedule onto the site, because I can't imagine Jeff would've typed "Illinois Benedictine" as one of the teams in the Tipoff Tourney. Benedictine University stopped being "Illinois Benedictine" over a decade ago.

Does anyone know how many (non league) DIII schools there are within 200 miles of Calvin?

The Dec. 6 game against Aquinas is always scheduled just before exams start.  You are suggesting that they travel 200 miles midweek
to satisfy some assinine in region definition.  It makes more sense to play 5 minutes from campus where the players can be home 30 minutes after the game has ended.  Aquinas has also upgraded their program the last couple of years

The Dec 16 game against Trinity is a game that is KVS vs a former assistant. It is  CRC vs CRC. It also allows players from Denver and South Dakota to leave Chicago right after the game and begin Christmas break.  KVS has done a good job of scheduling teams that prepare them for the league and tournament seasons.

That's irrelevant, Al. You have the entire Great Lakes region to choose from, not just the schools within 200 miles.

Besides, any Division III opponent would be better for selection purposes than any NAIA opponent.

Well said, Al--obviously KVS knows what he is doing.  I would rather see him schedule good teams that make the Knights learn more each game, than contort the schedule and the team to meet this "asinine rule."  If you happen to get the schools in that make it easier to get a Pool C bid, so be it.  But if you emphasize improving the team, you are much more likely to be in that position when the end of the season comes.

But will they all be willing to play a Hope or Calvin or Albion?

You may consider it an asinine in-region definition but after seven years, perhaps it's time to play within the system just a little bit. Even KVS himself on Hoopsville this past season said it was time to do so.

North: Will they ALL be willing to play? No. But there are 50 teams. Surely you can find one or two!

And I do not pretend to know the mind of these coaches.  Is it acurate to say that some of the games are contracted or promised to be played years ahead of time (i.e., the CCIW/MIAA match-up or the Bank of the year tournament)?

I believe this is Hope's year to sit out the tournament at Van Andel........it should be Cornerstone, Aquinas, Grand Valley State and Calvin.  Hope's played in the last 4 tournaments.

The CCIW/MIAA challenge was announced 3 or 4 years ago, so essentially yes the 4 schools have been tied into those matchups.  I don't know how much in advance the Van Andel tournament is set up but I think each school pretty much knows when they'll sit out.  But it doesn't always follow 4 years and then sit.

Didn't GVSU bail on the "Bank du jour" tourney?  I thought it was the 2 MIAA schools and the 2 NAIA schools every year now.

I don't know, I don't think it looks like such a bad sched... the Wooster tourney is awesome. That's gonna be an early "game of the year if both of the powerhouses end up being good next year after the dust settles. And how bad can a schedule be that has one of the top NCAC schools and two good CCIW opponents and Benedictine? Yeah, a lot of these games aren't in region for Calvin, but at least they're scheduling a good number of good d3 opponents.  ???

I mean lets face it, they could have Wheaton's schedule next year.  ::)

Potentially has one of the top NCAC schools. Also potentially has Aquinas twice.

Yes, GVSU is no longer a participant in this tournament.
