Steve Hettinga, former coach at Olivet, will be the new men's basketball coach at MacMurray College. What can Highlander fans expect, in terms of offense, defense, preparation, Xs and Os, etc. ? I know that Hettinga had some success at Olivet, but it said he "quietly resigned" after the 2004-2005 season. If it's the same person, he coached a pro team in Grand Rapids, but was "let go." What kind of person is he and did MacMurray get the right guy? We certainly hope so...

i love hope  sports all of them are really great to watch

Thud,  a couple years ago the Olivet Admin decided to go in a different direction with  a few of their coaches. I can confirm he did coach the pro team in Grand Rapids, though don't know why he left. I can tell you this... He's a competitor.  My thoughts are that  he can adapt playing styles to what type of players he has.  His teams  usually played very hard and got after people on the court. In a league with very good competition,  Hettinga's teams competed, and sometimes pulled the upsets with inferior, or perhaps rougher talent.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Play against Andrews. It gives the players some real game experience and allows players deep on the bench to get minutes early in the season.

West Ottawa would be a better challenge.

I know Andrews is not a great challenge, it just gives the kids a chance to play against guys wearing different colored shirts.

Just wondering if anyone knows how long Dan Aultman is back here for.  Is he going back to Norway?  I've seen him play at the Holland Rec League on Monday nights and at the 3 on 3 at Grandville Middle school today.  Just kind of wondering.

I think the idea behind the question posed by FDF was to facilitate discussion on the topic of Hope's scheduling choices, not to bash Andrews. Let's give the Cardinals a little credit, they show up and they try hard. It might be a little scary showing up at DeVos to play a school like Hope whose basketball prowess is well known.

That being said, I think just about any non-miaa game before the VA tourney is a good idea.

interesting to see Eric Elliot return to Hope to coach the JV squad.  i'm sure more than a few hollanders were disappointed to see Carlson leave (don't worry, he'll be back), but it is great for the program to see Elliot return...
could be an interesting interview process when gvw finally steps aside if elliot really enjoys coaching and carlson returns to apply for the position.  I still give the edge to carlson since he's the holland boy much like gvw, but it will be intriguing to see what elliot does with the jvs.

Carlson WILL be the head coach someday, but not for a while. The next coach after GVW will probably be there for 10 years (with Carlson as assistant). He's actually following GVW's path (he left Holland after being an assistant to get his doctorate at BYU, then returned to Hope). As Flea pointed out, Hope has a "teacher first, coach second" philosophy when it comes to hiring in their Kinesiology Dept. (Master's deg. required, PhD preferred) and this may prevent others from landing the job in the future.

re; Eric E.  This is a good move for Hope.  Only point may be it was in 89-91 when Eric was a stud in Holland, and today's players only know of him from the history books.  With all the "suits" on the Hope bench it is hard to tell what affect or input any of them really has with GVW.
With Voohees going to Kansas we have one less "prima donna" to
talk about. ;D

Believe me, from sitting behind the bench a few times, the assitants DO have an effect on GVW ("Glenn -- step back/'talk' to the official/he needs a sub/etc") and Elliott will be a great addition. And he's not as much of a stranger as you think. Most of the players do know and respect him, because he has made it a point to come back from Europe nearly every summer to work GVW's camps and play pickup ball with them.

re: Voorhees -- I must be slow this season...did he play somewhere D-1 *after* being let go from NAIA Cornerstone? Certainly you don't me "KU" as in Kansas for the new destination?

Aultman is working he for a construction company for the summer and playing in the Netherlands, I believe, next year. Supposedly the pay is higher with other perks like a car and apartment as well. not absolutly positive that it's the Netherlands but I am sure that he is still going to be playing somewhere next year and it's somewhere new.
"I started to look around at the fans and the team and I was sitting in the back, and I looked around and everybody was having a good time and that day, it truly made me realize what Michigan was about. It took me down, it humbled me. It taught me how to be a Michigan man instead of Jason Avant."

DeV...: Thanks for your insight on EE, and the activity on the Hope bench.  One sometimes wonders with all the people what gets done, and who gets GVW's ear ;)
The article in the GR Press indicated Voorhees was going to NAIA 1 Park in Kansas.  Apparently he enrolled there last winter after completing the fall semester at Cstone.  I am not sure what requirements (if any) NAIA imposes on transfers.

Maybe it's my poor memory, but didn't GVW's predecessor Russ DeVette also coach at Hope for a short time, and then leave to pursue further education and then return?  Or maybe he left for another reason, but there's a definite pattern.

And no - my poor memory is not because I was around at the time that occured with Coach DeVette.

Yes.  According to the Hope website:  Prior to joining the Hope faculty he taught and coached at Grand Haven (Mich.) High School. He holds the M.A. degree from Western Michigan University and the Ed.D. degree from Brigham Young University.

You seem suprised.  Do you see that as weird?

It could very well have been education in addition, but I was always under the impression he left to be in the Navy during the Korean War.

Article about Hope transfers Zach Osborn and Tim Dykgraaf

....it also mysteriously jumps into a paragraph about a Freshman named Dustin Miller from Marshall

Quote form Dykgraaf

"I was one of those kids who didn't think Division III basketball was all that great and I left high school thinking I was going to get a scholarship and I did," Dykgraaf said. "But I learned that money can't buy happiness."
