Well, Sac, it sounds like Hope brought in some really great talent again this year.  Who knows, maybe spellchecker will appear this year too! ;)

Got more info on the 3 Hope transfers.  Apparently they've made quit an impression in the short time they've been there.

The first really isn't a transfer. Stefan Rheinsthreys comes to Hope from Westlake, Ohio via Hanover, Germany.   As a 6-4 Sr. exchange student he averaged 24.8 points per game shooting over 65% from 3, and makeing 5 per game.  Has excellent ball skills, loves to shoot 3's obviously.   I asked him about gaurding Veldhouse and he just laughed and said, Veldhouse was vulnerable to flops and he'd get him in foul trouble every game.  Also said he doesn't go for fakes in the lane.

Brian Skreens is 6-6 250, played D1 football for Utah St as a TE, but a shoulder injury put an end to his football career.  Apparently GVW's morman ties convinced him Hope was the right place for him.  Doesn't score much but really throws his weight around.  I over heard Glenn say "he's like Spaman, only better".  He'll probably start

Lastly the guy who's makeing the biggest impact is Igor Dunksovernites.  The 6-11 stud played D1 hoops for Cornell last year but wanted a better academic challenge.  Despite that desire he ended up in Holland, said he was impressed with Vanderheide's performance last year and wanted to be the man in the middle Hope could count on for easy buckets.  Calls himself the missing piece, most at the practice just called him huge.

Of course all these transfers hasn't come without problems..........Matt Neal was repeatedly asking how the heck they could get Steven Cramer into the starting lineup with all that talent.  Steven just shrugged his shoulders and went back to practicing reverse 360 dunks.

One player was even heard saying he was transfering to Calvin and hopes to make the midseason roster, but I think there was something more to that, something about sick of all the dancing, off campus parties and football players at Hope.   He's pretty confident he'll play right away over there.

Also Eric Elliot will have several Jr's on this years roster, just not enough room on the varsity for them, that and Hope's inability to recruit any freshamn of consequence.  Of course since the JV's wasn't seen by anyone at DeVos last year, there's skepticism as to whether the team really exists.  Glenn wouldn't answer any questions and Elliot just smiled.

From what I could see Hope goes about 16 deep which I thought was weird since they only had 15 guys in practice.  But clearly this is the deepest most talented team Hope's ever had, they are loaded and could probably win the MIAA with just the end of the bench.  Glenn said he wasn't going to try that though.

I asked Glenn about the NAIA heavy schedule, he said not to worry because it wouldn't matter with all of Hope's talent.  He wants to fly in under the D3 radar this year and not put too much pressure on his kids.  He did say if Hope struggled in December, he had something cooking for the 2nd semester..... ...as he put it, he's got a couple transfer options he's looking at.

So that about sums up the practice.  I was looking around the old barn last night, what it great place to play basketball........however the place is really starting to show its age.  All in all I had an enjoyable evening at the first practice and really savored the hotdog with ketchup and mustard.

I confess you had me going until the bold lines - I'm sure you would NEVER place Hope behind Cornell in academics!!  (Though if I had paid more attention to the player names, I suppose I should have caught on more quickly!)

Excellent - +k.

After all the excitement at Hope's practice yesterday, I thought I'd speed over to Calvin and see if I couldn't sneak into their practice.  Once I walked in the door KVS just yelled out "Hey everyone Sac's here" and gave me a big hug and asked me to watch practice with him..........it seemed a little odd to tell you the truth.

I sat and watched the team shoot around for awhile, Veldhouse missed every shot he took and kept shakeing his head.  When I asked KVS what was up he just said that the whole Immink incident really had him shook up.   Said he went back to South Dakota to forget about basketball for awhile and started hanging out with random bikers headed to Sturgis.  KVS seemed happy to have him back in town and away from all the horrible influences of the Great Plains.  I can testify, it changes a man.

I asked KVS about Mantel and he just shook his head and said "he's the last legacy kid I'll ever recruit, I was convinced if Glenn was there I should be there, oh well".  I asked him about the kids from Colorado, he just shook his head again, "they're nothing but trouble".  He wouldn't answer anymore of my questions about his players after that.

I asked him if he was excited about the potential of coaching in a new arena, he said he was just gratefull its been in the master plan for the  last 20 years.  It was funny because thats how he answered every one of my  questions about the new arena.

Practice went on for a few more minutes, KVS got a little frustrated and told Meckes to sit down, apparently he's been blocking every shot in practice the first two days.  Kids going to be good.

As the Calvin kids were practicing FT's, KVS said he was real excited about some of the promotions to get more students to the games.....besides Hope of course.  He said there would be a big yellow foam hat night, on that night though they'll be checking ID's to make sure no one from Holland esp under the age of 10, and female is around to steal any of the hats.  They don't want to short change anyone.   Apparently they'll be giving out free RC cola at the games too.  I jokingly asked if the students would be the RC Crew, he said no that it was a little too gangsta' sounding.

I laughed because he really said gangsta'.

I told him about what Hope had for a team this year.........he just removed his glasses, shook his head, closed his eyes, rubbed his fingers on the bridge of his nose and started muttering over and over........"what will I do, what will I do"

I was pretty worried about him, but it was time for me to go.  I walked up the stairs to the balcony and turned to take one last look at the old gym.  Good memories, good memories.

As my stomach started growling I wished to myself that I could get a hotdog with ketchup and mustard at this place.   No such luck.

By the way Hope's had an indoor tennis facility for almost 15 years now, clearly Calvin felt they had to duplicate that effort. 8)   Is there a football program in that "master plan".

Not unless Title IX is taken out of effect

Title IX has nothing to do with Calvin and football.

That may not be the primary reason for no football at the C, but because of Title IX major shakeups would have to occur in Calvin's athletics to create a football team.

Somehow it seems to be possible to have football at 234 Division III football schools. Amazing.

Olivet has a roster posted with 32 names on it, so I suspect that this may either be everyone who went out, or they will end up with a JV and Varsity of 16 players each.
