Quote from: Flying Dutch Fan on November 25, 2006, 11:00:09 PMMr. Sager - around here we call them pre-season - you can call them whatever you want.

Preseason ended on November 16th this year. Once the games count towards your record, it's the regular season.

I see that Hope and Calvin have now played an entire baseball season's worth of games in their all-time series -- and even though it's 81-81, there's now a whopping 46-point bulge in all-time points in Hope's favor ... which means that the Dutch are now averaging 0.28 points per game more than the Knights when they go head-to-head. Honestly, folks, this series is becoming ridiculously lopsided.  :D

I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of you Hope and Calvin types on my side of the lake next Friday night when the CCIW/MIAA Classic takes place in Kenosha. It should be a great weekend of basketball, and I'm sure that some of my fellow CCIW Chat compatriots will join me in attendance as well.

Some of us refer to the November and December games as pre-conference, Greg.  And some of us refer to them, reverentially, as pre-Epiphanous.
At least a few of us would hope that what happened in Grand Rapids on Saturday is not a pre-cursor of what we'll witness in the "real" season. ;D

Wish I could make the trip across the pond this year, but pre-holiday duties beckon.

The Hornets finally put one in the win column last night with a win against Benedictine.  This, like Heidelberg, was a game they should win, and this time they took care of business. Clancy led the way with 23, 4-6 from 3 pt territory.   Henry McCain had a very good game with 14 and 12, including two very nice dunks.  All in all a nice non-conference win for the Hornets. Finals week this week, and then have a few days to get ready for Manchester.

Joppe did the K game last night. I used to really enjoy when Cooper would line up Joppe and Schipp on the same team. Schipp's a very good official, Id say the best in the league.  I may be mistaken, but didnt Schipper play his freshman year at Hope and then transfer to Calvin?  Guess he saw the light, unlike countless others.

Geerlings, Hope grad himself, should just stick with college football and spare us the screw jobs.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

In related fashion news, Flying Dutch Fan has been widely viewed (pun intended) in shockingly orange bermudas in recent years, but he was sporting blue at the Fieldhouse this weekend. :-\

Yes, I'm widely viewed in many places   ;D.  The orange shorts however are only worn to games at the DeVos Fieldhouse and are currently undefeated (however, they did succumb to a washing).

I too look forward to meeting a number of fellow posters in Kenosha this weekend.

Yep Schipper started at Hope and transferred to Calvin as a freshman.  If memory serves me correctly he did so at mid-season.  :-)  I could be mistaken on that score but I think he spent the fall semester at Hope and transferred at Xmas break.  I concur with Stinger:  I think Skip is a top-notch official.  Joppe is excellent too.  Geerlings?  Not so much.  Wish I could have been at the Calvin-Hope game Saturday night.  I had the Red Wings game on with the sound off and WFUR on and at one point the Wings were down 6-1 and Calvin was down 20!  I think Calvin will take some good lessons away from this game though and I also believe Calvin in January/February will be a better team than they are now.  Kudos to Hope for an impressive win!

ROFL!  :D  I think "pre-Epiphanous" puts a premature end to this preposterous argument.  And from a Presbyterian, no less!  :D

Don't tell anyone this but there's no contradiction in believing in the story of the 3 wise men and being a Calvinist. :-X

Congrats to the Dutchmen on an outstanding performance at the Fieldhouse on Saturday.

I was really impressed with the Dutchmen defense and thrilled with the mixing of defenses.  Hope played 4 different defense sets in the early going (3-2, 1-3-1, Man and 2-3).  I think this confused Calvin early and set the tone from the defensive side of the ball for Hope.

Couple of thoughts/observations:

1.  Jawwing -  Griffin/DVS/MVH all three had the yaps early.  Probably the only thing Geerlings did well Saturday was to tell them to tone it down.  Congrats to Cramer for staying out of it and letting his game do the talking.  Griffin used it alot in the first half, but was "pleasantly" quiet in the second.  Wonder if no points had something to do with that.

2.  Matchups -  I think Hope's lineup will provide matchup issues for all teams this year.  KVS commented on it in his Hudsonville Ice Cream post game comments.  Big teams could give Hope an issue at times this year, but they will provide similar matchup problems on the other end.

3.  Bench -  Yes, it was great to see Cramer, DVS & MVH lead the way Saturday.  But Hope will need more out of the bench and Reimink down the road.

4.  Partridge -  any word on his injury?  Coming out in a boot in the 2nd half, appeared it might be more than just a "high" ankle sprain

5.  Refs -  Schipper - interesting doing a Hope/Calvin game, but I do believe he is the best official in the MIAA.  I know having played in the Rivalry, it would be hard to do that game as an official.

Joppe - solid official, leave the arrogance at home and he's great!

Geerlings - horrendous, hopefully the Big Ten has a game next year during this tourney so we don't have to have him again.  Several mistakes, none which altered the game.  How about when Glenn went off on him, and if you were sitting within 15 rows you could hear Geerlings say, "Glenn don't show me up!".  Classic, he knew he was wrong so that was all he could say.

I do plan to get to the COW between the holidays for the Mose Hole, David.
Will I see you there?

I'll be there!  I'd forgotten that Calvin was coming; I hope to see a lot of you Calvinists there.  :)

Well, well,well.
I guess the first Calvin-Hope game I have missed in a couple of years turned out to be a classic. As I sat at Ford Field watching EGR run all over FHH, I couldn't help but wish to be in K'Crest. Well, at least until my ten minute updates began. Congrats to Hope on a win over Calvin in what was essentially like a half road game for them. I'm sure that Veldhouse will not be truning out many more of those performances and I expect the team defense to improve. However, you can expect Hope's big 3 to keep turning out performances like that.
"I started to look around at the fans and the team and I was sitting in the back, and I looked around and everybody was having a good time and that day, it truly made me realize what Michigan was about. It took me down, it humbled me. It taught me how to be a Michigan man instead of Jason Avant."

I didn't see Griffin do too much yapping, although he does have a little swagger and I'm sure guilty.  Van Solkema, however, was pretty constant, even moaning to an official during a time out after a foul call when Hope was up 20 or so.  When he uttered the loud "Oh Yeah Baby" after splitting two defenders (nice move, admittedly) but prior to putting in a circus scoop layup and then barking all the way down the court, my 9 year old leans over to me and says, "That kid is a real jerk."  From the mouths of babes.

I'm just hoping whatever alien inhabited Caleb's body has decided to quit possessing him by this weekend.  Will 4-5 hours will be sufficient to get there (Chicago traffic bites)???

looks like it was competitive for about 15 minutes,...........very strange but I recognize only about 3 or 4 players total from Alma and Olivet's boxscores this year.

Doc----maybe not the right place to ask but since a few of us will be heading to Kenosha, WI this weekend..........Have they finished the widening of 80/90 around the southside suburbs?

SKOT

As of last weekend, the only construction right now is at the 80/294 split if you take 294 around Chicago.  Mapquest says to take the skyway through the city, but I wouldn't do that because of the construction on the Dan Ryan plus you miss out on the over-expressway oasis (how do you pluralize that?)!They are always fun.
