Picket fence, two things affect how a given team moves in the poll:

1) How that team plays.

2) How other teams play.

Calvin went from receiving 15 votes to 3.  Another way to look at that is that the Knights went from being the 25th team on 15 of the voters' ballots (and not being on the other 10 ballots) to being the 25th team on 3 of the voters's ballots.

Many of those "lost votes" went to the impressive up and comers, like UW-Stout, Stevens Point, Potsdam St, etc.  The poll is about the body of work over the course of the season, and obviously some of the voters went another direction with the bottom of their ballot.

Since the last poll was voted on, Calvin squeaked by a very so-so Trinity Christian team at home, defeated a suspect Carthage team on a neutral court, and a bad Wheaton team on a neutral court.

There is nothing strange about it at all.

Picket Fence

I do not think Calvin should be ranked. My problem with the voters has more to do with last week's poll than this week's.  I think it's lazy by the pollsters.  If you say you can do it and committ the time, then you should do it right.

Albion is probably overrated, but as long as Crawford is going to put up 20 and 10 every night, I don't see who can beat the Britons.  In case you haven't seen the box, Crawford went for 24 and 15 tonight.  How did this guy get away from Otterbein or Ohio Northern?
Don't get caught watching the paint dry.

Crawford was hardly a polished player when he arrived at Albion.  I'd say he's worked pretty hard to get to his current level.  He may not have been on anyone's radar since he ended up at Oberlin.

Nice performance from K tonight, maybe the Hornets aren't the 7th place team in the league eh' coaches.

I don't want to restart the "is there a good loss" debate, but the Kzoo fans have got to be feeling pretty good about last night's performance.  It looks like they have the talent to compete.  The next step will be proving they have the mindset to win.  I can remember too many occasions where the Hornets snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

With both Calvin and Kalamazoo showing much better than expected play, it's going to be an interesting league schedule

hornet fan

Midline summed it up pretty well.  Hornets just ran out of gas...

He also was on point about Chris "Manu" Martin.  Good player, good flopper.

As I stated before, the Hornets just have to prove they can beat good teams.  At this point, they have proven that they have the talent to hang with good teams.  Yes, we are somewhat happy with last night's performance, but realize Coach P and the boys still have some work to do.

Highlight of the night (besides Clancy's buzzer-beating three):  Henry McCain going back door, catching the pass and dunking on a 6'8" Center.  Nice...

Stinger

There's no way the Hornets are the worst team in the conference.

Good synopsis from Midline, including how bad Martin flops to get to the line.   How about the Elmhurst coach? K has baseline out of bounds, with ball in the hand of the inbounder. The buzzer sounds and the refs wave off the buzzer. K, inbounds, and Konwinski nails a three. As Elmhurst is brining up the ball, their coach runs all the way out to half court, arms flailing. The refs stop the game, but no technical was  given. Are you kidding me? That was a joke.  If that were Smokin Joe a few years back, he wouldve been sent to the showers.

The MIAA needs to do something about these refs.  Somehow hold them more accountable for their performances, and skill as referees.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

.Adrian beat an athletic Oberlin team tonight, 61-51.  Good win and it makes the trip back from Cleveland easier.

I'm giving this an early nomination for overstatement of the year.

Final from last night:

Wooster 112 Oberlin 53   ;D

Oberlin sucks in all sports though. C.O.W. probably just left in their key players thet whole way to get in an extra 20 or 30 minutes of practice time in preparation for Wittenberg.

Everyone who dressed for Wooster (13 players) played at least 4 minutes; nobody played more than 23.

Look at it this way: imagine how awful the "trip back from Cleveland" would have been had they lost!  :)

Any "trip back from Cleveland" can't be all bad - I mean come on, at least you're leaving Cleveland  ;)

You guys are hysterical today! :D

It does put Adrian's win in a different light, though, doesn't it?  Ah well, they'll get better as the season rolls along... :P

If my team had just lost to Oberlin, I'd wait until the team bus was crossing the bridge over the Maumee River and then I'd grab the steering wheel and give it a good hard yank to the right.

After the Elmhurst @ Hope game MIAA fans were calling Chris Martin a dirty player. Now, after the Elmhurst @ Kalamazoo game, they're calling him a flopper. I guess that from Martin's point of view this can be considered progress. :D

Perhaps Elmhurst's appearance in the Albion tournament on the 28th and 29th will lead to further commentary about Martin's peccadillos from the silent-thus-far curators of the Michigan Hall of Fame of Super Sweetness.  ;)

Yes! I feel that way watching him play some times. And man, if he could play totally focused without being affected by his emotions... Man that would be SCARY!  :o

:D  Oh Sager!  You are on a roll tonight!  Between the bus comment, the flopper upgrade, and the very silent MHFSS, you've hit 3 home runs.  What have you been drinking this evening? ;D

Ha.

Good thing I'm a good sport.

Screw you guys. ;D  Just joking.

Anyways.

Siena Heights 64
Adrian 61

What a game tonight in Adrian.  The weather was bad outside (7 inches of snow in Adrian), but so was the Bulldogs from the free throw line.  10-27.  ouch!  Cost'em the game.  Adrian outplayed a very good Siena Heights team.  Challenge me on this one.  Siena can ball!  Maybe not the national power this year like in years past, but they'll be in the national tournament in the NAIA.

Adrian led by five with six or so to play and then Siena went on a run to claim a seven point lead, but Adrian responded and had two three point attempts in the last ten second bounce out.

Great effort.  And yes boys and girls, Jeff Nokovich is back.  Adrian is not in this game if he doesn't nut up and play D, pull jersey's, talk trash and then bag it up with a solid eight points and a great floor game.

AC led by one at the break and that included a 2-12 free throw show.

Bottom line Adrian beats a SHU team that could contend in the MIAA, if they make half of their 17 misses.  I'm a genius right!!!  ha!

The Bulldogs opened my eyes tonight by their great defensive performance and great execution of the offense.  The problem was Adrian was beating SHU off the dribble too much and getting fouled.  A good thing if your making free throws, but a bad thing tonight.

All in all...great atmosphere...stats said 1100 people, the MSFC holds 1500 and it was pretty full, maybe 100 or so seats left.

Now North Central rolls into Adrian Saturday...the big let down.
