But, the 2 in region games are musts for Hope since they are their last until conference starts!

Why?

I think it's wise of you to plan on possibly having to go the pool-C route into the NCAAs (;D), but if Hope wins both of those games, it'll only help their potential pool-C playoff bid a little bit, or maybe not much at all if those teams don't end up over .667. But if they lose one of the games, it'll hurt a LOT.

It seems to me that to estimate whether the games would help, you'd have to estimate how likely Hope is to win, what Carthage and Wheaton's final records are likely to be, and how the expected number of QOWI points they'd get would compare with their expected average in the MIAA. It's not simply that more in-region games is better.

In fact, one could argue that in general it's helpful for a game to be in-region if the opponent is in a weak conference, but it tends to be harmful if the opponent is in a strong conference.

Cheers for 201 miles!

Many of the posters here will remember Calvin's Steve Honderd, who was the D3 player of the decade in the 1990s and led the Knights to a national championship in 1992.
Deeply sad news for Steve and his family this week.  Steve and his wife Shelly's infant daughter, Isabelle Faith Honderd, died in her third week of life.
A memorial service is set for Saturday morning at Fellowship Reformed Church in Holland.
If you are inclined, keep the Honderd family in your prayers.

The CCIW/MIAA games at Carthage will be played as scheduled this evening.

Kenosha made the Weather Channel report a few minutes ago for the dubious distintion of recording 13.5 inches of snow since last night. :P
Safe travels to all!!!

Up to 15 now...........definately the hardest hit area in this storm was South Eastern Wisconsin.  Which is a little ironic because the last time Hope played at Carthage I believe they also got hard it with a snowstorm the day before the NCAA tournament game 3 a few years ago.

I still have plans to make the Saturday games.........drive safely

FINAL

Wheaton 73 Calvin 62

Calvin trailed the whole way, gave up 46 in the first half. "running in sand" is how it was described.  KVS very disappointed and sounded like it, not happy with the defense.

for Wheaton
Kent Raymond 24 points

Calvin
Veldhouse 16.......very quiet
Snoeyink 10
Griffen 10

Calvin shot 44%, Wheaton 47%
Wheaton outrebounded the Knights 37-29

Brings up a lot of questions about the Knights thats for sure

Women's game  WHEATON 49 Calvin 46

The first half defense has been poor in four out of the five games Calvin has played so far:

     Cooncordia  48 pts     52.6% FG
     Benedectine 31 pts    33%
     Aquinas       39 pts    54.8%
     Hope           46 pts    60%
     Wheaton      46 pts    56%

The lack of experience of playing defense the KVS way is really showing.  The loss of Trewhella and Draayer's mental and physical toughness on defense has been much harder to replace than their offense.

I talked to  the father of a Calvin player before the season and he said Calvin could be a .500 team prior to Jan. 1.  He said it could take awhile to sort out everyone's role and get acclimated to playing college ball.  It is beginning to look like he may have been right.

Rough night in Kenosha for Calvin and Hope.
Let's hope for a better result on Saturday.

FINAL from Kenosha

Carthage 72 Hope 65

Congrats to Carthage, Red Men take it in the final 10 minutes allowing just 2 Hope FG's in the final 6 minutes.  Missed FT's for Hope gave Carthage the chance to controll the final 3 minutes.  Sounded like both teams played good defense.

I lost track of individual scoring when FUR went off the air, but Cramer had 22 for Hope, VanderHeide with 10 , Schlemm 15 for Carthage

Much more balanced scoring from Carthage and hit 6 treys in the 2nd to Hope's 2........and thats the ballgame.

Basically for Hope this is the 4th loss for this program in the last 2 years, all 4 Hope couldn't score in the last 5 minutes.  That has got to change.

SAC -

Thanks for the updates on the scores (both men's and women's!) from the games. Got home too late to catch anything on the internet and I'm awfully glad that I didn't have to drive to Kenosha.  Unless people left on Thursday, I'm not sure they made it to the game!  Hello Winter!  Kudos to your "new" signature line. I'm not sure how long you've been using it, but definitely brought a smile to my beyond bonkers Friday.

Safe travel to those who decide to trek it to the games tomorrow.

no problemo Go Hope. ;D

A quick look at the boxscore this morning reavealed two things.....

-----Hope got zero points from what could be considered the 5 spot, that won't win many games

----At 11:30 of the second half, Kratz put in a layup to put Hope up 47-44, from that point on Hope was 3-17 from the floor, all threes.  They also missed at least 5 FT's including two front end of one on ones. Missing FT's and shooting 16% for a quarter of a game won't get it done.

A whole bunch of thougts from yesterday:

- The game last night was pretty ugly, in a lot of ways.  Hope did not really play well all game, in what is no doubt a tough place to play.  I commented to CM after the game that it felt a lot like playing at Albion, with a loud, boisterous student section (that definitely "consumed" before the game and during halftime)

- The defensive side of the ball looked a lot better last night than the offense.

- The offesne seemed to do well for a couple of trips, and then disapear.  As Sac noted, the last 10 minutes were horrid.

- The officiating seemed extremely lopsided and "homerish" to me.  Interested to here from any "neutral" observers out there

- Is the Carthage game in-Region for Hope?  According to Yahoo it's 207.1 miles

- While lot's of snow fell in Kenosha, the drive from Holland was probably the quickest trip through Chicago in history.  We  left at 2:30 yesterday afternoon and arrived at 6:00.  Very little traffic in Chicago, and the only thing we ever had to slow down for were the toll booths, when CM didn't blast through the I-pass lane.  Sac, you're rubbing off.
