Calvin once again learns you shouldn't spot any team, and especially one as good as WI Lax a lead.  Early on Lax got lots of easy looks, and Calvin just didn't respond.  Don't be fooled by the final score they were down 20+ at the half.  87-77

Hope 69 Trinity Christian 53

First half of this one was the whole story.  Hope almost completely shutdown the Trolls in the first, not a single shot went uncontested and TC had to work very hard for anything.  Its  was 2-0 TC then Hope went on a 18-2 run and it was basically over.  The first half talley was Hope 37 TC 17 and Hope didn't shoot well.

Hope basically played the first half in 4 shifts of substitutions for 5 min each.  It went........

9-4
9-0
9-5
10-8

Hope did an especially nice job doubling the post and never allowed TC to establish an inside game.  Ty DeWitte is the biggest big man Hope will face the rest of the season unless they make the NCAA or someone from the MIAA has someone I don't know about.  They did a very good job on him.

Second half Hope got very sloppy, we'll credit TC for leaving their quick guys on the floor more and pressing and generally causing havoc.  But Hope made very poor decisions with the ball and really didn't execute much of an offense.  TC pulled as close as 13 but Hope got the lead back to 20+ and then completely caved in the last 5 minutes.

Scoring for Hope

Wolfe 17, Reimink 8, Cramer 8, Partridge 8, Van Solekema 7, Richardson 7

Now Hope just needs to do something about that ballhog Wolfe ;)

Few thoughts

----Huge crowd tonight, definately over 3,000

----Many TC fans were heard saying this was the nicest arena they'd played in all season, better than that barn Calvin forced them to play in.  ;)

----The local kids had pretty tough nights, DeWitte 8, Rykse 8, Gruppen 5

-----Rochester beat Spring Arbor in a tight one that SAU lead throughout untill the final couple minutes.  Something the two kids in street clothes for the Cougars may have had something to do with this loss.  SAU is very young but they are full of shooters.  Rochester gutted that one out to win it in the end.

-----Do I even have to add up the MIAA's overall record now.........23-47, ick!

-----I'm really glad I wasn't the only one who noticed Ice-T coaching for Spring Arbor.  Dead ringer.

Calvin was a step slow last night and could not hit the basket in the first half.  You know you are not scoring when Bear DeVries is high point at half time with 6 points and Velthouse didn't score in the first half.  Caleb came on scoring in the late rally.  For tonight hopefully will not get so far behind early and have to catch up.  Mcckes will have to do a good guardint job on VanderVaart with his under the basket spin moves.  Also Wooster's Cooper has a smooth shot from beyound the arc.  Calvin needs everything to go right to have a chance tonight.

Here are a few random thoughts on the Calvin vs. UW La Crosse game last night in Wooster (and on Calvin's season in general):

1)  First, someone sitting next to me at the game told me that UW La Crosse shot 73% in the first half, while Calvin shot 27%.  That statistic alone sums up why Calvin found themselves down by 20 (or so) points at half-time.

2) Calvin often doesn't seem pumped up to play.  I've remarked a number of times that perhaps they need to scrimmage for a half before they actually play a game, because their slow starts are killing them.

3) Calvin often seems to have that "deer in the headlights" look about them when they play.  I think they are too worried about playing within the "system" that KVS is always preaching and they are ignoring their own good basketball instincts.  When Calvin finally let loose (especially Veldhouse and Meckes) in the second half last night, they seemed much more comfortable.  Granted, the UW La Crosse defense was playing more relaxed, but Calvin needs to play more confidently.

4) The most memorable moment of the game last night for me was when Caleb Veldhouse and a UW La Crosse player were both going for a rebound.  Veldhouse fell, and the opposing team member was in the process of helping him off the floor until he realized he was going to be fouled.  He promptly dropped Caleb back on the ground and walked away!

5) There was no national anthem sung last night.  I haven't been to a ton of games, but I can't ever remember that happening before.

The national anthem was played before the second game.  That's been the tradition at Wooster; I don't know why.  I presume the anthem will be played before the first game today, being that Wooster is playing in that game.

Halftime at DeVos

Hope 42 Rochester 30

A little crazy, Hope is 9-19 from 3 and hasn't scored a 2 point basket in 12 1/2 minutes.  All I can figure is Rochester is playing a serious zone.

Flying Dutch Fan

Hope 76  Rochester 74

That has to be one of the ugliest wins I've seen - and yet the stats don't show it as all that ugly.  Having been there, it felt like Hope just tried to give this game away as hard as they could.  That coupled with a couple of Rochester guys going on 5-5 and 2-2 streaks from 3 in the second half made this into a game.

Oh well, a win is a win.  On to Kalamazoo....

I have to admit I fell asleep early in the 2nd half.

Looks like Rochester got a little warm from 3 and and 3rd straight 3 with 11 minutes or so left gave them their first lead at 53-52.

Rochester led with 2 minutes to play then it looks like Hope came up with a couple big defensive plays and executed a little offense.......can't be to  upset with that after previous games.

Cramer 18, VanderHeide 12, Jager 10, Klein 9.........Cramer was 1-7 in the first and was 5-7 in the second with 15 of his 18 points.

Hope should be real pleased with the bench performance this weekend........29 points tonight, 34 last night.

So Hope finishes the non-conference 8-2 which is about what I figured but thruthfully I think they're a little ahead of where I thought they'd play as a team on the court.  Hope has a real chance to make a great run at the MIAA, they have to be the fav's going in.........tonight just proves it won't be the walk some people think.

PS I would like to know how much of a shot Rochester was able to get off at the buzzer?

The shot at the buzzer was on line, but short by a foot or better.

Rochester got hot because Hope's defense did the same thing you did in the second half....zzzzzzzzz.......   ;D   I don't know if they felt they had the game under control, ate too much Christmas dinner, or what, but it was a frustrating half to watch.

It may be important to note that the crowd, although full again today, was (to quote a certain someone else  ;) ) "morgue-like."  No noise, no support for the team until Rochester took the lead.  Then the crowd seemed to wake up a bit and give some much needed energy to the place.  Whatever the cause of the disjointed play and less than stellar shooting, let's hope the boys in orange and blue have gotten it out of their system.   :)
