.......  God help the team that meets the dutchment the day they can string an entire game together.
:o

.....it just occured to me all the talk of mascots is actually serious.  I think I'll vote for the squirel because I'd like to see the squirel beat the heck out of Cal the Knight while they play "Puff the Magic Dragon" later at the other Fieldhouse.

A squirel.......is this just because the Hope campus is overpopulated by squirels.  Thats just nuts!

The two captains look way better. They seem to fit the actual definition of "flying dutchment" a little better.

Well, the original Flying Dutchman is neither a seacaptain nor a flying squirrel, but actually a ghost ship.
Wikipedia entry on "Flying Dutchman"
There seems to be some school of thought that the term refers to the ship's captain, not the ship itself (Occultopedia entry on "Flying Dutchman"), but I don't buy it.  Maybe that's because I'm a big fan of Wagner's Der Fliegende Hollander, where it's a ship.

Personally, I think a ghost ship with a lifeless crew would make a pretty cool mascot.  Better than a flying squirrel, at least.   :D

As far as our mascots go, there are 4 choices. Unfortunately, both our online school newspaper and the voting form are down right now so I cannot upload any pictures. Two of the mascots are aviators and two are sailors.

The aviators seem to be some sort of literal version of "flying dutchmen" and one of them is actually a squirrel. All I can say about that is that it had better not win. The other looks pretty regular with an old school hat on and flying goggles to boot.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a rematch tomorrow vs. Aquinas. Hopefully the duthment can shake tonight's poor performance off and come out with guns blazing tomorrow against the saints.  God help the team that meets the dutchment the day they can string an entire game together.

Amen!  An entire game w/ an entirely healthy team -- the opponent won't know what hit them (but those of us grinning in the stands will).

As for the mascots...ugh!  The sailors sound horrid (no offense); the squirrel sounds kind of fun, although I'll take your word that it's not a good choice.  As far as the old school aviator hat/goggles, that really is old school -- like what was considered the mascot when I was a student (the dark ages, to be sure).  Here's hoping, as FDF said, that whatever it is turns out to be less stupid than Calvin's. :P  (The idea of the squirrel pounding Cal the Knight does have a certain appeal...)

Checked out the box score.....only 2 things stand out to suggest Hope played poorly.

#1 Madonna shot 60% from the floor in the first half and over 50% for the game....that might be the first time this year.

#2 Hope shoots just 30% from trey, 6-20.

Dark Knight

Hey fellow knighty-tighties! Maybe we can come up with some good suggestions to help the Hope faithful pick out a mascot. After all, haven't we shown our taste and sophistication with Cal the Knight?

How about this one?

I was looking over this Chicago team that Kzoo plays today and I am a bit confused by their past games.  They were close to IW but have struggled throughout to a bunch of lesser opponents.  Which team are they?  The one that nearly pulled the upset or the one losing to Wheaton and Carleton?  Hornet fans care to tell us later?

And another question, why did Hope stop playing that series?

And I kinda like the idea of a squirrel - maybe kinda like this...

tniem - if you want to read a good discussion about U of Chicago's "two teams", check out the CCIW board a week or so back.

And now, for your viewing pleasure (or displeasure), the four candidates.

Ok, if they were going to make our mascot a squirrel, they should have at least made it a black one. Anyone that goes to Hope knows what I'm talking about.

*sorry abou the small size of the pictures, I could have made them bigger but I'm afraid I'd be using too much bandwidth*

Thanks FDF, explains a lot.

MIdoubleA, you didn't actually make the image size smaller from what I can tell.  You just told it to be smaller when a browser displays the picture (so it loads the whole image - big and all, then displays as a tiny pic).  But everyone should be able to get the idea.  Thanks for doing this, I was just logging on to do the same after a friend sent them to me.

That's odd; the College of Wooster campus is also overpopulated with black squirrels, which are rarely seen off campus.  Maybe black squirrels are attracted to academics?  Or maybe it's coeds?  ::)

As for the mascot, I'm still in favor of the Condiments.  :D

Dark Knight

Actually, the images have all the bandwidth but half the visible size, something like lite beer. If you want to see a full-sized picture, copy the image location and paste it into the address bar. Or, in firefox, right-click on the image and choose "view image." In IE I think you can right-click and choose "open in a new window."

I vote for one of the ship captains. Then anyone who's read the story about the Flying Dutchman will know that this team is doomed forever to sail the seas of DIII basketball without reaching the shore of a National Championship. To come close, perhaps, but then to founder upon the rocks.  ;)

Dark Knight, I know it should not have made me laugh but that is the first time someone has put the myth together with a real explanation of why Hope has all this tradition and no championships.

I hate playing them twice.   ::)

But, Hope survived and gets by the Saints.  I will leave write ups for those that were at the game, but I have a couple observations on the 82-75 win.  Hit a free throw.  The game would have been over much earlier if the Dutchmen could have hit above 14 out of 28 from the free throw line (prompting the Hope announcer to say that Voisin's 63% on the season coming into the game was good free throw shooting.  Heck, today I would  have taken it).

Hope seemed to have trouble with the 2-3 defense that the Saints ran.  Everything was perimeter oriented.  It would be good to get the ball down low against the zone.  And the backdoor cut kept being mentioned on the radio.  Lots of easy baskets.  Gonna have to work on it.

But like I said, its Aquinas, and two wins against them in a year is not easy.
