As for the dunk, I saw it on YouTube.  No, the online video probably does not do it justice.  Was it a good or even a great dunk? Absolutely.  Was it poor sportsmanship, probably not.  The dunk was made in the context of the game.  Sure Alma was down big but let the kids and the fans have some fun.  Was the best D-III dunk ever? No. To quote Kip from Napoleon Dynamite "Like anyone could ever know that."  Like other posters have mentioned people will be most inclined to like the dunks that were made by their team that they personally saw live the best.  A 'best dunk ever' debate is absolutely insane.

Well stated.  ThanksKnightSlappy

Since 12pm Sunday night, there have been 34 posts talking about dunks

13--Hope
13--Calvin
2--Kzoo
8---other allegiances

Please feel free to change the topic, since we've now run the gamit of knocking the dunk immediately down by comparing it to others and have now gone all the way to unsportsmanlike.

We apologize for our exhuberance for our team and our players, we didn't realize you weren't suppose to be excited for your team.........I'm sorry I thought I had seen exhumberance from other posters in 2000, 2005.

I apologize for the Orange nation...........so how about that floor at Adrian, pretty slippery huh. ::)

Not sure if I deserved all the sarcasm.  Thought I posted my thoughts pretty decently.  Sorry to upset anyone.

Also, Crow "you're talking about practice, not a game... not a game, practice!" I'll bet plenty of passers-by at the Dow Center had already seen DVS and Cramer toy around with that play, but putting it together in a game on the fly is another story.

But what's on YouTube is simpler doing than what Meckes did on top of Phillips.  Like it was written earlier :

1 --- jump
2 --- charge
3 --- dunk
result --- score a basket WHILE FOULING SOMEONE ..... who else has done that?

Your post was fine, that just what happens when someone's skin is thin.

Hahah Sac, thank you for encouraging us all to move on and start some new topics I guess people are didnt quite get all there words out yet! So maybe this will be the start of something new..... Would anyone like to tell us Hopesters what we should expect from the tri-state team that only has one lose in the league. This is a huge game for the MIAA. It either opens the door for many teams as we make the turn for the second half of the MIAA season or it can put Hope in a very commanding lead. So I would love to hear from you posters that have seen this 5-1 team play.

Al,

I don't think it was mom's post that got SAC fired up... I think there are plenty of people with thinner skin!

The Cramer dunk against Alma was not only the best dunk at the DeVos, it was the best dunk in the history of the MIAA, Division III, and throughout all of basketball, worldwide!  That's just a fact, as I have come to learn from these posts that everything Hope does is the best.  So there!

Ah... Yeah... Thats it!!!
Good one WIZZY.

But the question remains... WWKVSD?

I say let the boys have some fun.  The dunk was more for the Hope fans and less an "in your face" to Alma in my opinion.
I'm sure it was fun for the Lincoln players to score over 200 points too... and for fans to yell obscenities... and etc. Obviously this is a relatively minor sportsmanship infraction. But regardless of the intentions, I don't think it would be hard to understand how the Alma program and fans could feel about something like that... no?

VG, good to see you back on. Don't let meanies like DHF  ;) get ya down!

Dutchman:  At this point you have to look at how Tri-State got to 5-1.  That one L comes to Calvin at Calvin.   They are a decent team, and they are more than capable of beating Hope.  However for them to beat Hope they have to play their absolute best game, and Hope has to take them lightly.  I would expect Tri State to come out firing, but eventually the lack of depth will hurt them.  If Hope jumps out on them early, and then goes to sleep the Thunder could make some serious noise. :)  If the big guy is back inside he could cause problems for Hope.

I think TSU only who has 2 guys (Brookins, Benford) who are threats.  Hope should win by

1. Isn't there a 48 hour rule about this dunk?

2.  The Hope posters like to point out other teams unsportmanlike fans, players, and coaches.  Isn't a "showboatin dunk"  to go up 35 with 13 minutes to go unsportsmanlike?  DVS had an easy boring layup but instead took the opportunity to rub it in Alma's face.

DVS did have a defender on him. It was actually the right play basketball-wise, John Wooden notwithstanding. Still, part of the appeal of any dunk (I would think) is the degree to which we know we could never do something like that. I can hit three-pointers, I can make a good pass, I can rebound and make layups (maybe not in an MIAA game) - but I can't dunk. The more a play strains our credulity, the more impressive it becomes to us. Throw in the crowd reaction and it was an electric moment. We Hope fans enjoyed it, and it's probably enough to leave it at that. Otherwise we are calculating degrees of difficulty and form and the next thing you know we're judging Olympic diving events and figure skating and are getting paid by the French to favor their athletes.

The fact that we have spent three days on this topic points out another thing that seems to be going on, namely, it is not a good thing for the league, and probably the board, if it is not competitive. Unless Calvin finds itself Hope is going to walk away with this thing, and any fan's interest is going to wane when a contest is no longer contested. It seems to me that is part of what CCMom is getting at also, and I think it's a fair point. To a non-Hope person I imagine it would get a little old.
