Not to nitpick but Kzoo finished 2nd in 93, 94 and 96 under Hacklin.  He had better talent than people remember.  Guys like Tarik Lester, Jon Njus, Jeff VanderWiere, the coach himself Rob Passage and Jeremy Cole.  The 96 team included Cole and Brian Blattert and Brad Phillips (Andy's bro) and whole host of good but not great role players like Brian Ellison.

Kzoo went 18-6 in both 93 and 94, the 96 team was just 15-9 but it was still good enough for 2nd in the league and they went to the wire with Hope's first Final Four team, losing at the buzzer.

I remember the 90-92 teams being pretty good as well but no one knew it  because Hope and Calvin were in the top 5 at the same time in those seasons.

Certainly the later teams in Hacklin's reign weren't very deep but you could always count on a tough defensive effort from the Hornets.  They always played hard.

There were many nervous trips to the AAC while he roamed the sidelines.

Civic minded, please just name some players on the 04-05 Calvin team or this years team that whines.  I am interested to hear who you have to say that whines.

This whining thing that Hope fans complain about is nothing.  Everytime this is brought up, think about how many final fours Calvin has been to. How many Hope has been to.  How many National Championships Calvin has one.  And how many Hope has one.

Then, see who you think is whining.

Civic Minded

Gentlemen, we are not talking about national championships (I personally don't give a flying fig that Calvin has won a couple, seriously.  Good for them.).

What we are talking about is whiners --who make faces, roll their eyes, roll their whole heads, and act like their favorite toy or candy has been taken away if a call goes against them.  Names? Dan Aultman, Trewella, Draayer, Snoeyink, and the current biggest offender, Tyler Zoerhof.  I will admit that there have been bigger whiners in the recent past (Chris Prins wrote the book).  And KVS himself tends toward the head rolling, eye rolling, whole body in distressed disbelief, oh-poor-me approach.

Now, that being said, there have been Hope players who have done the very same thing.  The difference is, I believe, that GVW doesn't put up with it.  You'll see it from a new kid for a game or two, and then the habit mysteriously disapppears.  Just a different philosophy.  And that's not to say that GVW doesn't have his own unique ways of showing displeasure (you've got to love the hands shoved in the khakis, jacket tails flailing, etc.).

I just personally can't stand whining -- I don't allow my son to behave that way, and I don't like to see it in others.  If it doesn't bother you, more power to ya.  (Now, don't go whining about this post!)   ;D

The post -- not to mention the previous one in which you first raised the whining subject -- speaks for itself. :'(

I think Civic Minded it just still bitter about all those players that contrubited to ending Hope's season last year when they beat them by 20+ points.

And all those players you named, I have no clue what you're talking about.  I don't think KVS will change his style of coaching.  He seems to know how to win and beat Hope by his current style of coaching.

NW Hope Fan

KVS is 10-12 against Hope, so his record is not quite as good as the historical record.

And that would be an 11 point win to end the season. And as far as I can tell Calvin has not beat Hope by 20 or more since 1990, while Hope spanked Calvin by 21 in '04

Calvin @ Hope

......just a reminder.

looks like some people can't wait.

and Goodknight, love the zen like post.  ;)

GoKnights68

You got that wrong, NW Hope Fan.  Calvin also spanked Hope by 21 last year, 82-61 in the miaa tourney semi-finals.  KVS is also 9-6 verse Hope since 2000.

So why start measuring in 2000?  Is this like the mutual fund ads that can just pick the right periods to show good performance?

In that theme, KVS is 0-12 in games where Calvin scored fewer points than Hope.

Amazingly Mrs W, GVW is 12-0 vs KVS in those same games.  ;D

Aw, that streak is nothing!  IWU is 1401-0 in games where they've out-scored the opponent! ;) ;D

"You called that on me?!?" This would describe Chris Prins' face everytime the official signaled Red (or White) 24.

I have seen nobody on Calvin that has done it as bad since then.  The current players do not do it as bad as others have in the past.  I think the Hope players know that the coach will do enough complaining to the officials whether the call is right or wrong.

This year's leaders: Eric Voison and Kyle Trewella.

On a different topic, why are the NCAC teams ranked ahead of the MIAA teams? Didn't Albion beat Wooster last year?

Maybe it's because Wooster beat Kalamazoo in 1998.  But then again, Alma beat Wooster in 1960.  So who knows?  Then again, maybe it's just an attempt to compare this year's teams.   ::)

As a Hope fan, I'll acknowledge that Eric Voison has given refs a lot of open-mouthed incredulous looks this year after foul calls (but then on some of them I've also been incredulous).  I also think GVW's bench demeanor has been noticeably more positive the last two or three years (not that he spends much time actually sitting on the bench).

Question for Greg Sagar or David Collinge or Pat Coleman or FDF (or someone who knows how to get an answer):  are the regional matchups for the postseason tournament predetermined already?  Or do they get decided at the time of the pairings?  (My question is stimulated partly by the earlier discussion of the strength of the Great Lakes and Midwest regions this year:  Do we know when they'd meet?)
