Dark Knight, it is way too early to really even look at the computer-based polls like Massey.  There just aren't enough games built in right now for Massey to be credible.

Titan Q,

It's true that it's early and that results are still in flux. You have to be aware of the variance in the system, especially early in the season, just as for the d3hoops.com poll. But 7-9 games completed is enough for both polls to start settling down. The standard deviation at this point is probably less than double what it will be by the end of the season.

As for credibility, you can estimate it by seeing what the poll did with teams you're familiar with. For the top 25, for example, the results are generally a few places off from the d3hoops.com poll. So take that as a measure of confidence: the results are probably within a few places for highly-ranked teams, perhaps proportionally similar for other teams.

Dark Knight,

While Titan Q may have a point, I really appreicate your posts regarding Massey -- especially the visual of the CCIW vs. MIAA.  Very interesting -- thanks!   :)

I too thought the CCIW / MIAA Breakdown was fascinating.. thanks!

I always find this the most interesting part of Massey...

Top Ten DIII Conferences

44 Wisconsin IAC
45 Ill & Wisc
48 UAA
60 NESCAC
64 IIAC
65 OAC
67 HCAC
69 MWC
72 MIAA
73 CAC

I think this is a bit low for the MIAA, but I guess we'll learn more as the season progresses?

April,

Were these last year's, or the rather premature this year rankings?  (Though, for conference-to-conference rankings, a great majority of this year's games have probably already been played - except in the tourney, of course.)

diehardfan

This years.... got them straight from the site just posted above

However, the rankings based on won/lost outcomes (not margin-of-victory) are up again, at http://masseyratings.com/rate.php?lg=cb.

That's sorta my theory Cabs... While I certainly see this changing some, conferences have probably played at least 2/3 of their non-conference games by now.

April,

You're probably right about the 2/3s, though some VERY significant contests are yet to come.  The two that stick in my mind (for some reason! ;)) would be Hanover @ IWU and IWU vs. Puget Sound (out in your new neck-of-the-woods), but I know there are many others as well.

Beyond that, for conference ranking, philosphical differences can arise: what weight is given to 'pre'-season vs. what weight is given to the tourney (where suddenly a top-loaded conference like the NCAC looks mighty good)?

I'm not really following your point, but I know one thing: the NCAC never looks good (as a conference) in the Massey ratings.

Adrian 70
Gettysburg 65

AC makes a comeback and wins on the road against Gettysburg.  The Bulldogs now play 2005 Elite Eight member King's.  I don't think King's has too many players back, but they are at home and got this transfer tonight from Bloomsburg.  I'm supposing today must be the first week of the new semester so he's eligible.  It is his first game with Kings.

BCollins has 25 points, while Gallus drops in 14.

AC could have a happy Christmas if they come home a winner.

Alright boys and girls.

Bowl games have started...though I think the Adrian-Albion double overtime thriller this year would draw more viewers than the sick game on tonight.

Also congrats to Mike Lewis on the Aztec Bowl win...great to have someone from the MIAA make First Team All-American in football and then represent the USA with a 53-15 stomping over Team Mexico.

U-S-A!

David,

I wasn't (at that point) talking about Massey.  But if one put emphasis on post-season, the NCAC looks better than several conferences that are otherwise generally ranked above them.  I was simply tipping my cap to Woo and Witt  - otherwise, I admit, your conference sucks! ;) ;D :'(

Kdoggy:

Looks like Adrian gets another good test tomorrow.  Let's hope they pass it.  I think at this point a win on the road over a solid team would do wonders for the Bulldogs, and could act as a springboard into the MIAA season.

I didn't get a chance to look at the stat line...were we any better from the free throw line?

Can you give us a hint of what you are talking about - like which team?

FDF,   allsportball has been calling for Buck Riley's firing over the past couple of months. He's over on mlive.com as well.  I'm not really sure what the reasons are. The guy's done pretty good things there at Adrian.  I'm a big fan of Buck.

I agree - I think Buck is a good coach and the last thing ADrian needs to do is get rid of him.

FDF and Stinger (and anyone else who might be interested).  I'd really like to know who this allsportball character is.   I think anyone that takes shots at Buck Riley does not know him, and does not have an appreciation of what college basketball and Division III basketball are all about.

Buck Riley is one of the classiest, kindest coaches I've ever met.  He runs his program well, recruits good kids, and makes them into good basketball players.  His teams always play good defense, and their effort is never in question.

As to rumors around campus of Coach's potential demise, I don't know.  I'm not on campus anymore, and I don't personally know the new president.  However, I know that Coach Riley gets along with him well, and is on a number of committees related to the future of the school.  It would seem odd to me to have a coach on such committees if you intended to fire him at the end of the season, but that's just me.
