Oldschool -

I thought Lakeland played good defense most of the night.  They seemed to make it very hard to get the ball into the post and collapsed hard when we did.  They did a good job attacking Hope's defensive rebounder, which limited our chances to push the ball. With that said, you just had to see Phillips, VanderHeide and Voison miss layups and putbacks to know it was both good defense and bad shooting.

Something changed in the last five minutes of the game - both the crowd and Hope seemed to wake up.  They were able to get the ball into Voison and he actually looked like a 5.

With 1:30 to go, Hope is up 9 (I think) and Glen empties the bench.  Two quick baskets by Lakeland and a couple of Hope turnovers and Hope is up 5 with a minute to go.  Then the coaching staff had an ephiphany - you can put starters back into the game!  With most of the starting lineup back in, minus Cramer, they managed to hold on and win by 7.

By the way, my guess is that Cramer is still not 100%.  He was subbed out frequently.  Maybe more telling - he had a clear breakaway and choose layup over dunk.

On the post game radio show, Coach Davelaar admitted that the game was ugly and if he was in the crowd he would have left at halftime to go watch the Alamo Bowl.

Disappointed to hear about the tough nite vs Lakeland - let's chalk it up to the blahs after a long break and hope that the team finds its game tonite vs John Carroll.

I am more disappointed over something else  -  I've complained before and no one will really find out the root cause - but once again, here it is next day after a game, and the Hope score is not posted here on D3 hoops.  When a person lives away from the area, this is the source for D3 scores... why in the world does Hope's longtime SID Tom Renner not have SOMEONE-ANYONE put the score in.  Even at 10:00 PM my time, 11:00 PM Michigan, the score was not on the Hope site - nor was the score of the John Carroll game that had been over for 4 hours.  Tom has had a hall of fame career, so I just cannot comprehend why scores aren't making it to this site on a timely basis.  I would also note that by middle of the nite (old guys wake up real early) all other ranked teams, including west coast, had their scores posted along with releases.  My source of info on Hope had to be Flying dutch's writeup in Post ups, and then going over to the Hope site.

WHY?    This is happening more often than not.
The only thing not to be liked in Florida is no D3 hoops!!!

hopefan - The scores not being up at 11:00 is no surprise - the game wasn't over until 10:45 or so.

If you really are that bothered by the scores not being posted, you should e-mail Tom Renner - because I'm sure no one else could answer your question.  His email address can be accessed on the Hope website.  You can also sign up for the Hope sports report to be automatically e-mailed to you.  There was one sent last night at around 12:15am

Dark Knight / Pat --I still think M-6 will save the necessary miles to slip it in. We need a computer program that will plot specific routes, rather than the prefed "best" routes from these mapquest, yahoo, etc...

And regarding Hope's use of 3rd stringers at the end--word is that Vanwieren told everybody that they would get a chance to participate in the game, to show they were a true "team." If that's the case, kudos to him for showing integrity with his word in the face of difficult obstacles. The world needs more people like that.

Completey disagree with Devossed comment. I think the team would be much more happy and a tighter unit if they were playing all but two of their games in March at the DeVos rather than Wooster or Wittenberg. You want to be one of the 4 seniors and lose your number one seed in the region because the coach promised he would play everybody. This isn't high school JV. The same thing almost happend against Madonna. I know Hope is not Duke, but Redick and Williams are still playing when Duke's up 30 with 5 to go.

I think the NCAA uses Microsoft Maps as the official mapping tool.

Yes. MS Streets and Trips 2004, and with the shortest possible distance setting. Nobody says you have to actually drive that route to get there, just that the software says the route exists is sufficient. :)

Pat, What are the addresses used?  Is it the official college address?  The arena?  Etc.?  I mean 1.3 miles, Calvin and Wheaton's campus has to be large enough to get you that extra .7 on each side.  What would have to be done before next year for the schools to get this in-region?

Wow.  Last night was... really hard to watch.  I think that the Grinch stole the shooting abilitites from the Dutchmen this past Christmas!  But if I still had one wish for Santa, that would be that when Hope has to send a game tape to an opposing team, THAT would be the game tape to send!!! It doesn't show them anything about the team that we know they can be!  Holy coldness.  The guys couldn't buy a basket, even if they were a 1/2 off after Christmas holiday special.  But I will say that they never gave up.  My comments are also just echos of what they have already said to themselves.  And believe it or not, when perusing through the record books weeks from now, most people will just notice the "W" in the win/loss column. Today... another day, another game!!!

A couple of bring spots of the evening:  Acknowledging the folks who the various gyms/rooms have been named after.  Talk about legacies that were on the floor last night.  Whooooeeeee.

And then the presentation of the Purple Heart to U.S. Army Major Jonathan Etterbeek and Hope College grad - that was way cool.  Too bad the basketball players from one of the teams from the earlier game who were in street clothes couldn't have stood and honored the Major like the rest of the folks at the DeVos.   ::)

GO HOPE!

Pat Coleman

I am not a plate tectonics expert, sorry. :)

Even if the new roads shorten the distance it's incumbent upon MS to get the new roads in their system. Then the NCAA has to decide to accept the new software (MS Streets and Trips 2006 or 2007, whatever the numbering system is).

The other option is to play this tournament during a seven-day break in classes, which will count as regional games between any two Division III opponents starting next year. That resolution is going to pass, it appears.

It's the official college address.

Oops.  My fingers got mi*wkdsp (mixed) up.  In the last post, it should have been "bright" spots last night!!

Sorry!

Well, I have finally been inside the DeVos Fieldhouse.  And I believe, as per the rule on this board, I get one comment to talk about the new building.   ;).  It is absolutely amazing.  Took me a good half hour of walking around to settle down.  Great to see so many friends and family.  Thanks all for the good time.

On the flip side, as I said to Civic and FDF, "Is this how we look every night?"  I had to cover my eyes.  Not too good.  I am going to hope that most of it had to do with the layover.  But I will get a chance to find out tonight.  We shall see.  And if I didn't stop by last night, find me.

re: scores and when the game ended, last night went way long.  With the plaque presentation and the purple heart, we didn't tip till well after 9.  A little too much for this alum to handle.

Finally, thanks to all Michiganders for the Christmas holiday.  I talked with a couple great people from Calvin (I know, who would have thought), on the flight back to GR.  It has been nice for the great midwestern hospitality.  I really enjoy where I am living on the East Coast, but this area will always have a special place in my heart.

Yep, the plaque presentation took WAY too long.  That could have been shortened to 5 minutes easily.  Some people drive in from out of town to the game and work on Thursday morning.....

On the plus side tonight should be more manageable timewise.  And I expect to see a few more illogical substitutions tonight per usual.

ChicagoHopeNut

In the midwest for Christmas so I took the time to go up to Holland last night for the game. Easily the worst played collegiate game I have ever seen. Embarassingly bad but its true John Carrol could not have learned a thing about the Hope team to prepare for tonight's game. Hopefully, everyone remembers how to shoot for tonight's game. Also the free throw shooting is embarassing. A bunch of 6th graders had a free throw shooting at halftime and I would have taken any one of them on the floor over every member of Hope's team for the free throws.

My comments on DeVos. Amazing place...I think, however, I was so caught up in the condiment dispensers I never had time to look around the rest of the buiding. I actually missed the first half of the game trying to find the source of the ketchup!
