75-74 Calvin with 2:15 to go, each team with possessions to take control but neither has been able to take advantage

78-75 Albion, Veldhouse going to the line.  Hits 2, 78-77 with 9 seconds left.

Silas going to the line... 80-77 timeout, 8 seconds to go.

Veldhouse misses the 3 to tie

Close and exciting game at Kresge tonight. 82-77 Albion win. First time I ever wish that Calvin could have pulled off one of those miraculous late 3s to win/tie a game. Really this does hurt Hope and any chance of an at large bid they might have should they not win the MIAA tourney.

Good all around effort by Hope and a very good night shooting for the team. 55% from the floor overall and 55% from beyond the arc plus 85% from the line, really great to see the team shoot so well tonight. Tyler Wolfe went for 23 on 6-6 shooting including 5-5 from the 3. VH, Reimink and Klein added 10 while Cramer contributed 15.

I just raised that same point on the NCAC board.  IMO the QOWI gap is not nearly large enough to outweigh 2 or 3 more in-region losses.

IMO, 0.4 is a gigantic gap in QOWI and I would also remind you that not only does JCU have two more regional losses, it has three more regional wins.

Don't get caught fixating on the loss column. It's not the only component of a regional ranking.

Wolfe has been finding his stroke back, which is good to see. With any luck, Cramer is getting his game back too.

I suppose we can draw a number of lessons from Calvin's loss tonight, including the fact that Hope's win at Kresge last week is looking a little better now. I'm not sure how much Calvin's loss will hurt Hope - I trust the people who know the byzantine mathematics of DIII basketball better than I will be able to enlighten us on that. I suppose it is also a cautionary tale about getting too high on a team when they have a really good week.

Bottom line for Hope is this: if they can't win the MIAA (in an admittedly down year) tourney on their home floor, they probably don't deserve to go anyway. And if they did go, they probably wouldn't get far. Let's hope they are finding another gear for the postseason.

Hornets hang on for a 77-69 win tonight.   Kellogg finishes with 24 on 9-9 shooting, including a couple of dunks.

This puts Kzoo in a tie for 6th with Olivet. Kzoo has Calvin,  Olivet hosts Albion.  If they end up tied, I believe K would own the tiebreaker with their win against Adrian in the 2nd half.  Could someone here confirm that for me?

Having just come from the NCAC board when I posted that, I was just thinking in terms of Woo and Witt (though I realize that wasn't very polite here on my 'home' Michigan board!) - they each have 15 in-region wins, just like JCU.

I suppose I probably discount QOWI more than I should because of its obvious defects.  Is the change to including opponent's opponents records starting next year?

Looks like Adrian will have to match up with Albion in the first round of the tourney.  My crystal ball tells me hope/alma, calvin/olivet, 3state/kzoo, albion/adrian.  Could be 2 blow outs, 2 good ones.

Mr. Yipsi, I agree with you. I guess I have a better idea now of why JCU jumped but I just don't buy into the QoWI as that reliable of a measure of a team. I certainly don't see how JCU jumps 4 spots this past week.

Actually I believe Albion beating Calvin is kind of wash if that makes sense, Hope's two wins over Albion become more valuable tonight and will likely stay that way if Albion makes the semi-finals...........their in-region record stays above .500.

Calvin needed to sweep up to the semi's to get above the .667 threshold, but that would have meant beating Albion and the win value's over Albion would have dropped.

I haven't checked how the other w's and l's have affected QOWI.

Civic Minded

What?  I beat sac home?  Say it isn't so!  (Ah, nevermind -- he's posting while I'm posting -- hi Sac!)

Solid play from the Dutchmen, holding Issac Smith to only 12 points.  Still not quite there energy-wise, but looking a little more like themselves.  Second unit brought great defensive energy to the floor (I'll let sac fill in the statistical details).

Learned at BK after the game that Tyler Wolfe scored 20 straight points.  20 straight points!  As HC pointed out earlier, on any given night, a different Hope player can put the hurt on ya.  Tonight was Tyler's night.

Some truly bizarre officiating.  So bizarre, in fact, that one of our regular and reviered posters who normally doesn't let such things affect him, was on his feet disputing more than one call.  It was that bizarre.  Funniest moment?  During some free throw shooting, someone was popping plastic bags (or something similar) which resulted in a loud "bang."  Heard from the crowd: "Don't shoot the refs!" with mock alarm and much sarcasm.  Funny.

Sounds like quite the game in Albion!  Congrats to the Brits, and the Hornets.  Wow.  Leave home for a few hours and the world goes topsy turvy.   :)

On to Saturday!
