Completey disagree with Devossed comment. I think the team would be much more happy and a tighter unit if they were playing all but two of their games in March at the DeVos rather than Wooster or Wittenberg. You want to be one of the 4 seniors and lose your number one seed in the region because the coach promised he would play everybody. This isn't high school JV. The same thing almost happend against Madonna. I know Hope is not Duke, but Redick and Williams are still playing when Duke's up 30 with 5 to go.

Then you don't know the members of this team very well, or its coach. Integrity in his word is something Glenn has stood by for longer than his 40+ years association with Hope College. If he says he's going to do something, it would take hell or high water to prevent it.  And that's the same for Kevin Vandestreek too. I've known him for a long time and he's shown integrity again and again.

If Hope would have lost the game, I can see the rationale for your complaint. But they held on, with the coaching strategy that WAS used. That's one of the many reasons why he's one of the best, and why we are not on the sidelines in blazers and khakis like the other 10 coaches. :D

Well tonight was a big turnaround for Hope - in most regards. Once they figured out JC's full court press, they moved the ball around and shot very well. Cramer and Phillips still had trouble shooting and they each had <10 points. One interesting statistic you may not have caught - Hope's bench matched the starters for points in the first half. Kudos go to Partridge and Wolfe for reminding the starters how they need to play.

As for John Carroll, I was not impressed at all with their team. They are very physical in a very annoying way. They do just enough not to get a foul, but still interrupt play in an illegal way. Fortunately the ref's caught on in the 2nd half and 2 people fouled out with another 3 or 4 with 4 fouls.

Anyway, a good night for the dutchmen and a well deserved victory.

Good game by the Dutchmen tonight.  Still started a little slow, but they got a huge lift off the bench with Tyler Wolfe scoring 13 in the first half.  Immink took over in the second and finished with 24 - and was named tournament MVP.  Hope basically outmanned a good John Carroll team.   Can't wait for next week and the league to get started

Oh, and don't forget to log your picks on the MIAA Pick 'Em board - rules are posted there as well.

Does anyone know why Mark Barnes of Alma and Brandon Giles of Adrianwho just won player of the week are not in the box scores?

Sounds like it was a good thing for me that the Alamo Bowl was on TV on Wednesday night. I still got the misery of watching another predictable loss, but at least the bowl game had the entertainment of laughing at the most incompetent referees to ever set foot on a football field. Of course, if Wednesday was truly up there with the ugliest college games ever, maybe it would have been a fun experiment to see that though. Fortunately it sounds like it only took the one warmup to get back to form following the layoff.

I haven't seen mention of VanderHeide. Still out for now?

anders - Marcus played and started both games.  Great hustle and 8 points or so each game.

Several thoughts about last night:

- Phillips truly impressed me.  With his shot still not "up to par" he worked really hard to get his 14 points.  The most impressive piece was that he also had 14 rebounds, and while an offensive struggle might cause a loss of focus on defense - his defense last night was really good.

- Against the constant pressure of the JC press, Hope took pretty good care of the ball.  It's pretty nice to have 4 starters on the floor who can bring the ball up.  At various times, Immink, Cramer, Phillips, and VanderHeide all did so with great success, despite the floping of Pete Moran.

- Sac mention to me before the game that he thought JC would be the kind of team that Immink would do well against - once again proving that sac is truly a HOFer.

Since I wasn't able to make it down to Tampa this week, I took in the Albion/Elmhurst game last night.  Crawford, like every other game couldn't be stopped.  He was all over inside  and Elmurst's big men were unable to do anything  to contain him. I still contend the refs let him get away with a ton.

Martin was sattled to the bench most of the game, much because of a stupid technical he picked up.  I also loved another classic flop at the end to get his 20 points.

Albion got some good home cooking last night. I guess that's to be expected in your home tournament.  I have to say, Coach Turner is a master with the refs, almost embarrassingly so.

Oh yeah, and K lost by 23 last night.

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Anyone have an Alma vs. Denison score from this afternoon in Cleveland?

Adrian wins the Marietta Shrine Tournament with a 96-89 win over Marietta.  Jeff Nokovich named the tournament MVP.  Billy Collins paced the Bulldogs with 29 points (looks like he's breaking out of his slump just in time for conference play).  Looks like Adrian got some much needed momentum heading into the start of the conference season.

Bulldogs defeat Marietta in the old Tri-State offense style...96-89.  Billy Collins 29 points, mostly on lay-ups.  Jeff Nokovich named tournament MVP, in two games, he has 25 points, 17 rebounds, 16 assists and six steals...great to see him play well!

Now Brandon Crawford and Albion come to town!!  I heard Riley has Chuck Nevitt transferring in to check BC.  Transfer time in Adrian.

Giles didn't make the trip for AC...family reasons...will be back for Wednesday's game, but how much will he play...Buck will dictate that!

In a hard-fought, physical game Calvin fell to D-II Regis 64-57 out in Colorado. Regis apparently plays a very physical style, and Calvin battled with them for most of the game, except for a few minutes at the start of the second half. Calvin trailed by 1 at the half and fell to 12 behind before too long. They battled back to a 1-point lead which they couldn't hold.

Regis had a big, physical player draped over Draayer who held him to 13 points; Trewhella had 18.

I checked the stat sheet from Calvin's website and it looks like the foul situation  (reffing?) played a major role in the outcome. The Knights were whistled for 24 fouls vs. 16 for D II Regis.  Meckes and DeVries played only 18 and 17 minutes each and they both fouled out so it makes one wonder if the Knights got hometowned--or maybe homestated. Draayer had 4 fouls so apparently the refs took it easy on a fellow Coloradoan. I don't imagine Dark Knight was at the game but it would be nice to hear from someone who was and get their input on what happened. The Knights didn't appear to shoot very well either shooting only 19 for 52 vs. 23 for 43 for Regis.

Dark Knight

I listened to about half the game on the radio. The announcers thought that the refs let them play most of the time, but made some strange calls. Meckes apparently got an ordinary foul and a technical on the same play--announcers couldn't tell why--and fouled out. The confusion about that play was right before the Knights lost their only 2nd-half lead.

I suspect the poor shooting was due largely to Regis' defense, because the announcers commented that Trewhella and Draayer weren't getting good looks. However, for that first part of the second half, nothing was falling for the Knights.
