Agreed, HopeConvert . . . Hope had an off day (34% shooting, including 21% of 3's) . . . but a good day for an off day, and the defensive effort was there.  As HoopDreams has noted, even the players on the bench seemed quiet this weekend (a contrast to the women's bench which is often on its feet and clapping for teammates on the floor and racing out to greet them when timeouts are called).  But then these were unexciting games at the end of an exam week, and with a group that is still getting to know each other.  I'm looking forward to watching their improvement as the season progresses.  I think the talent is there to compete for this young team to compete for the MIAA title.

And, yes, a bright light is the anticipation of watching David Krombeen energize the team for the next four years.  Given Hope's need for a genuine center who can play above the 6' 4"/6" 5" guys that often are playing the post, I also hope to see Venema earn more minutes.

Wooster's ahead of Albion 34-32 at the half.  Albion led by 11 at one point and were outscored 14-2 in the final 3 minutes of the half.

It is a pleasure to listen to Jeff Febus call a basketball game.

Halftime at the home of the Trolls:

Trinity Christian Trolls 33
Calvin Knights 34

Calvin has struggled from the free throw line.

Albion has tied the game at Wooster at 58, with 2:39 left.

They're headed to OT.

Well Wooster and Albion traded 11 point leads, Albion in the first half, Wooster the 2nd.  But Albion rallied down the stretch and tied it at 58.

Albion had the ball for over a minute and a half tied at 58, missing a couple shots and regaining the rebound a couple times but couldn't cash in.  Wooster missed an in-close shot at the horn.

....heading to OT.

Calvin loses to Trinity 73-65.

Tim Walker gets his first win against his old team.

Final from Trollville
Trinity 73
Calvin 65

The bleeding continues. ??? ::)
A comprehensively dismal second half performance by Calvin gives Trinity its second-ever victory over the Knights, and its first in 36 years.
The 3-5 Knights limp into a long holiday break on a four-game losing streak.

Did I hear Febus right?  First loss to Trinity Christian since 1973, only 13 games but still.

First 4 game losing streak since 1983?

This loss shocks me, but congrats to TC, they've been bangin' their heads against the Hope/Calvin wall a long time without much success.

Trinity Christian is not a bad team at all.  The Trolls beat Olivet Nazarene last week (at ONU), and in the last couple weeks, NAIA I ONU has wins over Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage, and an OT loss to NAIA I #12 McKendree.  I had heard before the year that Trinity Christian would be good and their win over Olivet Nazarene last week got my attention...

Are Alma and Finlandia so desperate to find opponents they have to play each other on back-to-back days in the same gym, halfway between the schools.

From the Finlandia schedule........
Dec. 19 Alma College @ St. Ignace, Mich. 7:00 p.m.
Dec. 20 Alma College @ St. Ignace, Mich.  2:00 p.m.

From the Alma schedule.........
Dec. 19 Finlandia University St. Ignace 7 pm
Dec. 20 Finlandia University St. Ignace 2 pm

Never heard of that before. :-\
---------------------------------------------------------

I had one of those marketing recognition moments involving St. Ignace this fall.  We ate at a restaurant on the lake (had the whitefish of course), and the motto on their t-shirts was "St. Ignace, a quaint drinking village with a fishing problem."

Few weeks later I was in Gulf Shores eating at Bubba's (had the shrimp), and of course the motto on their shirts was "Gulf Shores, a quaint drinking village with a fishing problem."

I'm inclined to believe them both.

Mr. Ypsi

I don't know about Alma, but Finlandia IS desperate for in-region opponents.  Until the NCAA can realize that they HAVE to be in the West, they are screwed. :(

At 400+ miles, Alma is their CLOSEST Great Lakes opponent!

Someone needs to tell John Mantel that he is an excellent player and that he can maximize his effectiveness by going down low and demanding the ball.

Wouldn't that be the responsibility of the coach?  Putting a player where he is most likely to succeed?
