he  transfered   to olivet  from hope
I just checked Olivet's rosters and Jorin Scott is not on either one. Also looked at the book from their last two games and no Jorin Scott ???

Is it possible to wish for Stephen Cramer to come back as part of GVW's Christmas list?  Lots of great memories there, but please...no talk of the greatest dunk in the history of basketball.

gk68:  Your analysis and mine look pretty much alike.  It is nice to see Veltema starting to provide some scoring punch much like Engelsma did later last year.  To me the problem with the Knight equation right now is rebounding.  Veltema just doesn't pull in his share, Mantel running around out of the paint doesn't help, and when Zoerhof is in he does reasonably well with rebounding, but he is not an offensive threat.  For my money a player to get pt must either score or rebound, and currently Calvin doesn't have many who do both well consistantly.  I think Calvin has had reasonably talented teams the last 5-6 years, but none that could dominate most teams or games.

The good new for Calvin is that they have played some tough teams with some really good players (Wheaton, Carthage, Aquinas) and their regional record still stands at 0-0.  Hopefully KVS and the Knights use these games as "learning experiences".  If a team can grow from games like these and turn some games later in the year to W's then it really doesn't much matter if they have a good or bad pre-season record.  What remains to be seen is if the Knights can and will learn and grow from these games.

Fewer big-men up high (setting ball screens for Caleb only surrounds Caleb with more defenders!)
More big-men down low (if you are the biggest guy on the floor, you can score more points and grab more boards if you are closer to the hoop.)
Don't force up shots just because you are yet to score (cough...Caleb...cough)
Consider putting Caleb back at the point on occasion  The best player has to get the ball. (I think Caleb gets worn out carrying an extra defender in his jersey.  Putting him on the ball will prevent him from getting pushed/pulled/grabbed/shoved so often).
Win the head game (These kids are good and I still maintain that they can beat any team on any night.  They need to keep the confidence up.)
Don't allow so many open 3's (If an opponents strategy is swing/skip pass for an open jumper this needs to be identified early and the defense needs to adjust.)

The pre-season record pales in significance to the pre-conference record, which in turn quakes in the shadow of the conference record and in-region records.  But really ... only one game matters -- the championship of the MIAA tournament for the AQ.

Jeff Bell once scored 45 I think so its not an Olivet record and I'm not sure where that would fall on their list.

I guess my memory was adjusting for inflation......

Olivet's all-time scoring single game
1 Jeff Bell – 42 points vs. Walsh 11/21/1997
2 Gordon Lofts – 40 points vs. Albion 2/17/1968
3 Gordon Lofts – 39 points vs. Calvin 2/27/1965
4 Brandon McClary - 38 points vs Franklin 12-17-2008

Aquinas loses to U of D by 10.

The box score shows that Lierman did not play. His presence would have helped the Saints.

Last night, MSU scored an indifferent 14 point win in East Lansing over The Citadel in a game a lot closer than most people might expect--especially if you enjoy comparing the scores of other games. This is the same Citadel squad that barely defeated Grace Bible, leading the "Bible Tigers" ;) by only 3 with two minutes left before winning by 9. This is the same Grace Bible team Calvin hammered by 33 the following week and Hope handled pretty easily last week. Go figure.

So I think if I did all the math correctly Calvin would beat MSU by 10. ;)

As much as it pains me to be the guy with the "lump of coal".  :P   It strikes me that Lierman may not be Hope's only concern when you tie that in with a good AQ team getting Telman back.

Some sad news to pass along... Doug Schlaff, who played for Hope during the now infamous "game that shall not be named" (BW, 1995; sorry sac), has passed away after a very lengthy battle with cancer.  He was the head coach at Manistee HS.  He leaves behind his wife and three little boys.   His brother, Paul, played baseball for Hope and teaches at Reeths Puffer.  Prayers for his family would be appreciated.

Wow that is very sad news.  Always loved Doug's sweet left handed bank shots from 15 feet.
