From the Defiance website--this is a bit of info on Calvin's opponent on Monday

Geneva will come into play riding an impressive 98-94, overtime victory over Bethany on Dec. 13 which brought the Golden Tornados to 2-5 on the year. Much like the offenses of Defiance and Rockford, Geneva pours it in at a clip of 79.3 points per night and boasts five players who net over eight points a night. The attack is led by 19.9 points a game from Richard Colick.

I saw Bethany at Capital last year in the first round of the NCAA's, any sentence that uses the words impressive and overtime victory over Bethany has me suspicious.   http://www.d3hoops.com/school/GNVA/mens/2009

Somehow when Geneva becomes an official D3 member this would be an in-region game, but Wheaton isn't...............loopy system.

Interesting tidbit, Bethany is 5-5 and has played 7 opponents with two words in their name, 4 with hyphens

Hey, he's just trying to fill the void between Christmas and New Year's. :D

[Used to be we could fill it with speculation about UM in the Rose Bowl. :(]

Maybe they play Grinnel ball?

Albion plays Cazenovia out in Pa-honicks today, www.miaa.org has a link to video.  You have to pay 7.50 but you get all the games I think, which are plentifull.

Miaa.org says its a 6pm start (assume EST), the Cactus Jam website says 4:30 (assume MST, 6:30 EST)  ..........so I don't know.

Either way if you need your basketball fix, there's that.

Not just a slow week, but a slow season.  If team/league success = fan interest*, and fan interest=postings to D3hopes.com, then this is a worse year than last year.  From 11/1507-12/27/07 this board covered 70 pages of postings.  From 11/1508-12/27/08 we have only covered 48 pages.  I have not yet run a Chi-squared statistical analysis**, but a 22 page difference appears to be statistically significant.

*Detroit Lions notwithstanding

Not just a slow week, but a slow season.

First time in probably 4 seasons the league doesn't have a legit Final Four contender.

Someone posted the records of all the conferences in D3 on the CCIW board.........here is the bottom 12.

CCC 50-70   0.417
Landmark 25-36   0.410
AMCC 18-26   0.409
MIAA 27-43   0.386
CUNYAC 25-44   0.362
SLIAC 22-39   0.361
North Atlantic 19-35   0.352
Independents 38-73   0.342
ASC 15-30   0.333
NEAC 25-52   0.325
UMAC 19-40   0.322
GSAC 11-24   0.314

We're hanging with a weak crowd this year, I don't think I could confindently name a team from half of those.  It was only 2004 or 2005 when the MIAA was flirting with the top 5.

Sometimes when you try to flirt with a top 5, you end up with an Appletini in your face.

Fed my basketball hunger with a couple high school games at the Breslin Center at Michigan State this morning/afternoon.  I only bring this up because it had a Hope connection, which was purely an accident.

The first game pitted Laingsburg against Ithaca, both Class C I think.  Laingsburg is coached by former Hope player Greg Mitchel, who must be getting close to his 20th year at the helm.  Laingsburg won farely easily, and from last years records this may have been an upset  I have no idea.  But his teams play a very familiar looking full court defense, and play with a pretty high level of energy (also familiar).

The second game was the real reason I went.  It was a matchup of two programs that have combined to win 10 State Championships and 9 Runner-ups between them..............in Wrestling.  Eaton Rapids and Grandville are year in and year out two of the top notch wrestling programs in the state, basketball........not so much.   (side note the two programs do meet in wrestling next weekend in Eaton Rapids)

Grandville is coached by former Hope player Kyle VanderWall, and one of his assistants is another player Charlie Kleinheksel.  Another asst. I recognize as a Hope grad but can't recall his name.  Grandville keeps with the standard Hope policy of a player/coach ratio of 2-1.  (another sidenote:  the Principal at Eaton Rapids is a Hope grad and former football team captain)

Kyle called a brilliant timeout with 6.1 seconds remaining as his team was struggling to create a 3 to potentially tie the game and send it to OT.  But then when the shots go in they're all brilliant aren't they.  It capped a 16 point turnaround, with some pretty solid halftime adjustments.  ER's Alex Gauna a 6-8 Jr. Center is the real reason I went (Stephen Bell has him #1 among the state's Jr. Centers), and in OT he sort of tookover and won the game at the FT line.  Score one for the Class B over Class A and my homeboys.

oh yes there's more..........

If Traverse City St. Francis swings through your area this year, be sure to see them just to see Holden Greiner play.  TCSF played Flint Beecher in game 3, I had to leave at the half but saw enough of Greiner to know he's a special player.  I've never seen a 6-8 kid play point gaurd on offense, and then center on defense, with the ability to post-up on offense.  He's accepted a scholarship to Lehigh, all I could think was how awesome he'd be in D3.  They were up big on a pretty good Beecher team when I left, St. Francis could be back at Breslin in March for the finals.

Wish I could have stayed for the night games, Lansing Eastern has a manchild So. LaDonte Henton who could be the next in a long line of Lansing basketball legends with Magic Johnson and the Vincent brothers.  Eastern was taking on Cadillac and 6-7 Ben Simmons.    The main event featured Detroit Country Day which boasts as many as 9 Division 1 talented players, such as 6-11 DeShonte Riley.  They would face local team Grand Ledge with 6-9 Jon Horford (Al's little brother).

In the category of days......not a bad one.

I saw the Lansing Eastern/Cadillac game.  Simmons is a real player.  He missed maybe 3 shots while scoring 38.  Maybe Henton had a bad game, but he played as if he didn't want to be there.  He looks to be a special player, but he showed his age.

As for the Grand Ledge/DDC game.  Fun game.  Grand Ledge stayed with DDC for half the game.  DDC has too much talent.  Love their point guard.  Dumars, the best DDC shooter was 1 for 6.  Entertaining game.

I didn't see Maas there, but wasn't looking for him either.  Program says Craig Lawton, but there are only 2 assts. listed and they had 6 in suits.
