Grandville is coached by former Hope player Kyle VanderWall, and one of his assistants is another player Charlie Kleinheksel.  Another asst. I recognize as a Hope grad but can't recall his name.
I think that would be Kyle Maas.

I didn't see Maas there, but wasn't looking for him either.  Program says Craig Lawton, but there are only 2 assts. listed and they had 6 in suits.

Maybe Henton had a bad game, but he played as if he didn't want to be there.  He looks to be a special player, but he showed his age.

15 going on 30
I wasn't aging him.  I thought he played less than his age.

Trine beat Nazareth, I don't have a score.  They'll play the winner of Staten Island (0-7) and St. Joseph's (Brooklyn)(3-5) on Monday.

Some more great tidbits of info, Staten Island has no dorms, and recently picked up 3 new varsity players over the break.

Update

Trine 79 Nazareth 75

Update, update

Trine will play St. Joesph's (Brooklyn) on Monday.

Hope hosts its 20th Russ DeVette Classic tonight and tommorrow, which seems impossible for two reasons.  One, I can't believe its December 29 already, and two I was at the first one of these and it can't really be 20 years already can it?

Hope's won 7 of the last 8 of these things, and should be favorites to win #8.  This tournament boasts Judson, Madonna and Davenport..........this is the first time in basketball history anyone used the word 'boasts' and those 3 schools in the same sentence.  (Apologies to those teams fans).

Unlike the first tournament this year, these teams have won enough games that you can't use just 1 hand to show how many(thats not true it just seems that way).  Madonna 4-9, Judson 8-7, and Davenport 10-4.  As you might suspect I think these records are suspect........Judson's only played 1 D3, and beat them,  UW-River Falls (6-4).....they did stay within 15 of #2 NAIA Bethel and last year they beat Carthage.  Half the schools on their schedule I'm not certain I've ever heard of.  It appears maybe there's some quality there, some inconsistent quality but at least a couple guys who can play.

Madonna is 4-9, if you look at their schedule its almost as if you can see the day they decided they'd had enough of playing good basketball teams and programs and just wanted to start winning some games.  Madonna's on a 4 game winning streak, Alma, Holy Cross (not that HC) Ft Wayne-Taylor and Notre Dame (not that ND).

(You ever wonder like I do how many people have said that it was really nice of Madonna(that one) to start a college?)

Hope plays Davenport tonight, which will be the first ever meeting between the neighbors.  The Panthers are in about year 3 or 4 or even 5 of their program and their growth has been pretty impressive.  The only thing I know about them is their best player is suposedly redshirting.  They look taller than your avg WHAC team.

Davenport has 10 wins but..............Kuyper, Andrews, Calumet-St. Joseph, Purdue North Central, Goshen, Grace Bible and Calumet-St. Joseph again, so not sure what to think about those.  They did beat Trine, and went down to Virginia and beat D3's Bridgewater and Eastern Mennonite.  They also got beat handily by Trinity Christian, stayed with GVSU, and lost to Lindsey Wilson (I thought her sister was cute).  Davenport's last game was a loss to Grace Bible.

Davenport doesn't believe in keeping stats, so I'm going to say Sai-Quan Griffeth is their best player, but only because I like typing and saying Sai-Quan Griffeth.  The Panthers even have an honest to goodness Russian on their team, from Moscow even.  Kakhabar Urigashvilli, I thought he scored the winning goal in a  UEFA Cup game I saw a few weeks ago.

So I really have no level of excitement for this tournament, I cannot and hopefully never will get excited about seeing, Madonna, Davenport and Judson in the same gym.  Seems this tournament deserves better competition but with a young Hope team I supose I understand the thought process.

I was thinking about the teams in this years tournament as I was listeneing to Tom Renner on the radio this morning talk about the fact that Hope is the only MIAA team to host a tournament between Christmas & New Years.  All of the other teams that are playing, are playing in Florida, or Ohio, or Arizona - you know, places you might want to go in the middle of winter (although the idea of going to Ohio makes me shudder).

I suspect that most teams who are looking for games to schedule this time of year are not necessarily looking to come to Holland - aka the Land of Weird Weather.  It seems like we've had all four seasons in the last 3 days - fog, rain, floods, snow, wind, sleet, thunderstorms, hurricanes, tsunamis...   ???

With a name like Kakhabar Urigashvilli, it appears that your "honest-to-goodness Russian" is actually a Georgian who (like many Georgian expatriates) happens to hail from Moscow. The strategy that I would encourage Glenn Van Wieren to pursue is to outfit his team in Russian Army uniforms and thus induce Urigashvilli to surrender. ;)

Sai-Quan Griffeth? He must be the only player in the entire NAIA who plays while armed with a light saber.

My apologies, sac, my maroon and gold glasses must have been fogged over the first time I read your post.  I've been a little teary eyed all day just wondering how Calvin might play tonight after their holiday layoff.  Traditionally, they play very poor after the holidays.  The last time they won the national championship they ran the table in the MIAA but lost the two tournament games in CA immediately following the holiday break.  They seem to struggle with those games every year and with their lack of confidence this year, tonight could be a disaster.  But, I predict they are down double digits in the first hafl and then come back for a victory rally in the second stanza.

Davenport's Tyler Moreland had a good high school career at Flint Powers.  He was a good 3 point shooter in H.S. but has missed all 8 attempts this year. ???

Good to see they do keep track, guess they just don't believe in linking them to their website. ???

One last thing about the DeVette Classic before Calvin gets the boards attention.

Nice write-up from the Hope website on the coach.  http://www.hope.edu/pr/athletics/mbb/mbbdevettebio.html

also this fantastic photo back when Hope's travel budget was out of control.  I think they were flying to Alma that day.
