Sac:  Thanks for the memories.  I haven't seen a picture of the old Blue Goose air lines in years, not to mention a DC 3.
I know this was before your time, but Davenport did play bball in the late 50's, early 60 era.  Not sure the exact dates, but met a guy once who claimed he was their star center.  He is a GR Christian grad so I took him for his word. :)

Calvin 91-65.  Nice to see KVS took my advice, and shook things up a little.  Also good to see that a kick in pants got Mr. Katt to do his job, and get some rebounds.

LTK:  I liked most of the things you said.  The one exception would probably have to be that one player.  If memory serves correct, even when he was a starter, (on the floor with the 4 other "best" players) his numbers were never impressive.

Calvin 91 – Geneva 65

Geneva is 2-5 and probably would fit in nicely with the 3 teams invited to Hope's tournament and articulately described by SAC. Nevertheless, I like the starting lineup, like Veldhouse back at the point, and although Calvin still needs to get the ball into Mantel more – that's pretty hard to do when Mantel is sitting on the bench most of the first half with foul trouble.

Realist: we're splitting hairs over the Katt thing  -- I know his numbers aren't great, but my point is that he adds leadership, energy, and experience that aren't measurable in terms of statistics. In any event, I think Katt's numbers were pretty good tonight: 5 for 8 shooting with 9 rebounds—those 9 rebounds led all players on both teams despite less playing time than many others (The stats went down with 6.5 minutes left, but I think these numbers are correct)

Doug Wentworth said Nate Sytsma was wearing street clothes. Was the injury he had at Trinity serious?

Davenport played basketball until about the late seventies.  I remember a couple of Calvin Christian H.S. grads Rick Bolkema and Jim Feyen having very good careers at Davenport under Coach Al Wooten.

Sac:  Thanks for the memories.  I haven't seen a picture of the old Blue Goose air lines in years, not to mention a DC 3.

My first ever commercial flight was on a Republic Airlines DC-3 which still had North Central Airlines painted on the side and of course the familiar Blue Goose tail emblem.

not unlike this one........in fact it might just be the one.

We flew the direct route of Lansing to Muskegon to Milwaukee to Chicago without ever leaving the plane,  then a different airline to Orlando.........this was before regional jet service became the norm, 1979ish.   I think we were going to see Mickey and the gang.

Looks like Judson hangs on to beat Madonna, they did their best attempt to miss enough FT's to make Madonna think she had a shot........er, they had a shot.   87-83 Final.

Defiance scores 52 in the first half!

Sadly, they trail by 4!

Halftime in Holland

Hope 46 Davenport 31

For about 10 minutes of the first half Jesse Reimink had more points than Davenport.  17 points in the first 8 1/2 minutes.  He picked up 2 quick fouls around the 8 min mark and sat the rest of the half.

Hope led by 12 when Jesse sat, and were able to push the lead to 19, which I suppose is positive.  Davenport closed it back to 13 before the break, then I guess Will Bowser happened.

Nothing real special about the stats, I'll just point out Hope shot it well 19-33 57%, and only committed 2 turnovers.

Reimink 17, Tanis 8, Krombeen 6

Rockford might be the most improved team in D3, last year 1-24 and lost 13 games by more than 20 points.

This year 4-5...........5 losses by 3, 5, 2, 7 and 5 so far.

Final

Hope 94 Davenport 61

Not alot of drama to be had when Hope comes out and hits their first 6 shots of the second half.......buried this one early, like so many before.

Hope continued its steller shooting from the 1st, they flirted with 75% for most of the second half and finished 17-25 at 68%.  36-58 for 62 % overall........a DeVos Record.

Reimink finished with 24 on 10-13, and 8 rebs.  Tanis 14, Krombeen 11, Bowser 8

Davenport's worst losses before tonight were 15 to Trinity Christian and 12 to Grand Valley State.   All indications are Hope played some excellent basketball for long periods tonight.

Realist (sic), I think it may have been someone else's post on December 22, that suggested the lineup change and the seniors, including Mr. Katt, be used more.  Veldhouse and Smith started at the guards and senior Zwier started at forward.  Senior Mr. Katt had a significant 22 minutes of playing time with 10 pts. and 10 rebounds and brought his senior leadership to the team.

It was suggested KVS was tinkering with the chemistry and it looks like he may have figured it out with an added twist in the starting lineup that neither one of us expected.  And while I did not see the game it the score makes it look like they stepped up their defense in the second half by limiting the opponent to 24 points.  Also great to see a big night for Dustin Smith.

also, this fantastic photo back when Hope's travel budget was out of control.  I think they were flying to Alma that day.

Congrats to the Flying Dutchmen for taking care of business and getting the W.

Now for my rant . . .  :o
I'm glad I was able to listen in to the broadcast to catch the action.  Now don't get me wrong.  I'm very thankful that WHTC streams the broadcast on their website.

However . . . those announcers (they don't deserve to be called sportscasters) just drove me absolutely nuts!  Game after game, Ron Weatherbee mispronounces names, and he did it again tonight.  He referred to Zach Osburn as Zach Osborn, and David Krombeen as David Kromben.

He even butchered some of the opponents names.  He repeatedly referred to Davenport's Matt Braczak as Barzak, and Kaha Urigashvili (listed as coming from Moscow, Russia) as simply KU, and just laughed it off, totally disrespecting this young man's name.  Tyler Ybema earned several different pronunciations.

Guest announcer at least tried to help Weatherbee out by providing Kaha's full name several times, but Weatherbee would have none of it, and kept going back to KU.  I wondered if the broadcast suddenly went through a time/space warp, and I ended up listening to a Jayhawk game broadcast.   ???  But guest man also said several times that Kaha was from the USSR.  The last time I checked, that nation does not exist anymore.  Guest man needs a European history lesson.

Back in the day, I was a sportscaster.  I learned a long time ago that everyone's name is important, and that I needed to do my homework to properly prepare for a broadcast.  Will somebody PLEEEASE straighten these announcers out!?  These student-athletes deserve better!

There, rant's over.  I've been wanting to do this after a number of recent games.   :D

And now . . . back to your regularly scheduled post-game analysis.

Flying Dutch Fan

For me, this was finally a full 40 minutes of good, hard, Hope basketball.  Defensive intensity was there, no letdown after coming out of the half with a lead (like has happened a couple of times in the past).

- Bunn seemed to be more comfortable as the 2, and I expect that will continue on game by game.

-I love Tanis off the bench (maybe he's one of those guys that's better off the bench than starting), and he had his shot back tonight.  He also had some nice moves to the basket, which later freed him up from the outside.

- Jesse was lights out to open the game, and looked like he could have scored 50, but a couple of quick fouls and a big lead stopped that from happening

- Osburn was all over the place on D, had 4 steals, and just out-hustled everyone

- I think Krombeen at the point, with Carter backing him up is the right combination.  And with the youth of those two, it bodes well for a future that will continue to get brighter as they both continue to improve.

Nice catch on the photo sac. It's good to see what the Hope coaching staff looked like before issuance of the blue blazers.

Based on the box score, it appears that Calvin's win over Geneva was primarily done on the strength of superior shooting. Calvin outshot Geneva 51% to 40%. Here's the link to the box:

http://www.defianceathletics.com/PDF/2008-2009/P&Gtourney/GenevaCalvinBox.pdf

Smith went 7-13 (3-6 from downtown) and once again Veltema had a solid shooting game going 5-10 for 12 points. Having Katt go 5-8 with 10 boards is a pleasant surprise. On the negative side, Tim failed to foul out despite playing 22 minutes. ;)
