A couple of other thoughts on tonight's game at VanNoord.

--As wiz mentioned, the new arena does not yet seem to display any home court advantage. I've seen the Knights play three games there and in each one they've had long stretches when they just couldn't score--as you often see when playing on the road.

--Olivet had 17 assists tonight while Calvin only had 6 assists. Much of that disparity was due to the play of Andre Evans who is a talented and dangerous point guard, with an ability to break down a defense off the dribble. He led all scorers with 19, went 5-9 on threes, and showed good floor leadership. He might be the quickest player in the MIAA.

According to the play-by-play in Live Stats, Andy Venema has two dunks and a block in 7 minutes in the first half.   :o

RR

Any word on where they rank in the history of DIII?

Just nice power moves both times, but I can't believe he didn't draw a technical on the first one. It looked like he was going to pull the whole backboard support down and take it up court with him. I've seen people get T'd up for a lot less hanging on the rim. Osburn did pick up the slack in the technical department later though; it looked like just some rough fighting for a rebound so I'm not sure what set him off so badly.

Speaking of dunks, for the second game in a row, a Hope opponent ended the half by just barely not getting a shot off before the buzzer (the shot clock buzzer in Alma's case) because they were going up for an open dunk. Don't normally see that so often.

The 2nd half play-by-play shows Calvin missed 8 layups in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Kzoo was on the wrong side of history tonight.
http://www.miaa.org/mbb/stats/0809/m121kzab.htm

Their 32 points is the lowest for a Hornet team since a 1948 defeat to Detroit (Detroit Mercy I assume) 37-29.

Two years before, Albion held them to 27, in a 41-27 loss.  So tonight was the fewest vs an MIAA opponent in 63 years.

I don't know where that figures with the rest of the MIAA but it has to be in the mix for fewest points in a long time.

I've never had reason to visit the Kzoo archives, they are quit good. (under 'history')

From where I was sitting it was obvious why no technical was called there.  Several of the Alma players were directly underneath Andy, and he was hanging on the rim so he wouldn't come down on them.

Overall a good game by the Dutchmen - back on track and shooting the ball well, running their offense, and playing good D.  Alma is a very physical team that will - "punch you in the mouth" - figuratively if not literally.

On to Adrian for what should be a good game on Saturday, and a potential barn burner in Albion between the Britons and the Knights.

A coouple things we learned tonight

1. Trine is the worst team in the league
2.  Trine is the softest team in the league.
3. Trine misses Tony Benford alot. What actually happened with him?
4.  Olivet will be a tough out in the tournament.

Good victory for AC tonight.  Good luck against Hope on Saturday

Tony Benford transferred to Bethel(IN) and is redshirting this year.  Bethel is ranked #1 or #2 in NAIA II.

I thought Hope had stretches tonight where they played well, and other stretches where they played sloppy. Part of that was a response to what Alma was throwing at them, but overall not the best game I've seen from the Dutchmen. Still, it's a good victory and a shot in the arm after Saturday.

Does anyone know the answer to this? If Hope wins at Calvin, but suffers another loss somewhere along the line, who hosts the MIAA tournament, and why?

Guess we can all feel better about our CCIW tourny tonight as Carthage beats the number one team in the country!!!

Some thoughts from the DeVos tonight:

*  Heads up to the Alma team - it's not High School anymore - during player introductions please go to mid-court and shake hands with your opponent, not the officials!!

*  A curious question, does #5 for Alma, Shaun Gordon, live in a bank?  His hometown is listed as National City!   ;D

*  Once again, the Alma Coach, Terry Smith, provided my seatmate with some interesting answers to the question, "How would you describe Alma's coach?" Responses were, Mild mannered, calm, quiet, reserved, introverted, disinterested, wishy-washy, quiet, shy, and timid.  (PLEASE NOTE - THE ANSWERS WERE VERY SARCASTIC!!)

*  0.3 seconds left on the clock in the first half, Alma has the ball, and #21's eyes are bigger than saucers, the slam/jam move is all his!!! But hold it ladies and gentlemen, shot-clock violation, and the basket is NO good!  Put the tongue back into the mouth, stop flexing and chest pumping, but rather, its time to get back on "D" - bummer for him.

*  Another curious question, did #12 by any chance transfer from Judson College? His play very much mirrored that team's play which called for the paramedics to be on the sidelines!

*  And..... the "early" Academy Award for best *FLOP* of the season goes to #23. Must have been watching night film!

*  And with just 6:57 left in the game, I realized that there were only 2 officials on the floor. We did notice that Dave Joppe was limping quite badly at the end of the first half.  Never saw if he twisted it, or stopped funnyon it, guess it must just be attibuted to getting old!! :)

*  Word that was passed in our section was Olivet has now set a precedent:  ALL MIAA teams must now win at the VanNoord!!!

*  And a HUGE assist to Ty Tanis for dishing the ball to Nathaniel King for a 2 point lay-up. Now that was totally team!

*  Lastly.... 2390 at the DeVos and 2021 in Grand Rapids, hmmmmmmm.....

As someone already stated, "We have a race folks." Nicely put!

Someone in my section noticed that Joppe was limping slightly very early on, within the first few minutes. I hadn't even noticed he wasn't making any of the second half calls, but perhaps he tried to go despite a nagging injury and couldn't pull it off.

Does anyone know the answer to this? If Hope wins at Calvin, but suffers another loss somewhere along the line, who hosts the MIAA tournament, and why?

It depends on each team's record against the third place team.  If those are the same, you go down to the fourth place team, and so on.

In your example, Hope would host if they lose to a team that finishes below Olivet.  If both lose to each other and to Olivet, I am not sure who would host.

Sometimes the system seems backwards to me, as it seems you could get penalized for losing to a better team.  As long as the rules are defined, it doesn't much matter.  (except for maybe Texas football)

If it comes down to that, it's time to flip a coin
