Feb. 12, 1986 was the last time Olivet had won at Calvin.

Thats 22 straight regular season wins, and 8 MIAA tournament meetings.  30 straight wins by Calvin at home vs Olivet overall.

I suppose Calvin's loss last night is less of an upset than MSU's, but when you've won 30 straight at home against an opponent, it's still a surprise. I found Howie Beardsley's article about the Spartans' game eerily familiar. Except for the name and a few other changes, you could talk about the Knights.*

Of course, the lyrics to another Neil Diamond hit comes to mind:

Song sung blue
Everybody knows one
Song sung blue
Every garden grows one

Me and you are subject to the blues now and then
But when you take the blues and make a song
You sing them out again
Sing them out again

Song sung blue
Weeping like a willow
Song sung blue
Sleeping on my pillow

Funny thing, but you can sing it with a cry in your voice
And before you know it, get to feeling good
You simply got no choice

When I signed on last night and heard about Rodts suspension, and then saw Campbell listed as starting I took it as a bad sign.  Rodts is out (no problem with that), just surprised his replacement wasn't someone who had seen more p.t.
Calvin has no one but themselves to blame for last night.  Sadly at points last night it sounded eerily similar to games in 08.

This day's been coming and I'm sad to see it here so soon.  I doubt Ray remembers but I first met him in the mid 80's when my uncle dragged Ray to play golf with his nephew and my dad on one of MSU's Forest Aker's courses.  I'm sure I made a fantastic impression that day. ::)  Little did I know then that Hope was in my future.

Ray and Sue have been familiar faces I could talk to at many Hope games and on more than a couple occasions made sure I had good seats for some important contests.  I hope they remain a strong presense at Hope athletics events, they will be sorely missed by many.

***  here's one of those weird memory moments.   I sat next to Ray at the Michigan State v Indiana football game that decided the Big 10 Championship in 1987.

Updated +/- from Wed.

Calvin 4-1   (+1)
Hope 4-1    (+1)
Adrian  3-2  (+1)
Albion 3-2    (0)
Olivet 3-2     (+1)
Alma 2-3     (0)
Kzoo 1-4      (-2)
Trine 0-5      (-2)

Pretty straight forward, only thing noteable is Adrian/Olivet are affectively a game ahead of Albion and Albion is 2 back of first place.

Also just a curious note,  only Alma can finish unbeaten at home this year, everyone else has lost at least once on the home floor........thats kind of crazy just 3 weeks into conference play.

Saturday, January 24
Alma at Olivet, 3 p.m.
Calvin at Albion, 3 p.m.
Trine at Kalamazoo, 3 p.m.
Hope at Adrian, 7:30 p.m.

With the right results this weekend (Adrian/Albion/Olivet wins), we'll have a 5 way tie for 1st place.

We had originally booked Olivet's coach but he has no voice today, so we will have to talk to him some other time. :)

Gee, I can't imagine the circumstances which led to his loss of voice! ;)

Here's the link to the KVS interview on Hoopsville.  The interview is about 15 minutes in.  It starts right after a commercial.  It takes a minute to load and the show opening goes on for awhile.

KVS stated that Veldhouse and Mantel were 0-16 in the second half against Olivet

I'm sure that KVS felt like a Solitary Man after that loss and maybe felt the need for a little Cracklin' Rosie (or Red Red Wine for that matter).

Trish says:

Calvin strength at away games: 21.9
Calvin strength at the Van Noord: 2.9

Meanwhile, Albion looks like it is trying to repeat last year.

Strength, first 2 games: -14
Stength, next 3 games: 9.1

This could be another dangerous game for Calvin, unless the away court advantage kicks in.
