I'm imagining someone checking out this board for the first time and starting on this page. "Wow, those MIAA schools sure produce some outstanding scholars!"

I've got a trivia question. Have there been any major match-ups over the years between individual players (I'm thinking Bird and Thomas) that have gone on throughout their collegiate careers?

Either that or "Wow, they sure have WAY too much time on their hands!!"   :D

I'm thinking they would be double checking to see if this is really supposed to be a discussion of basketball or not

My son made what I thought was a unique observation about Hope basketball and its history.

"Do you realize that Hope has had two basketball coaches since 1948, over 60 years ago."  The first one, Russ DeVette, was the first MIAA MVP in 1947, and the second, Glenn Van Wieren, was one of his prize players from 1960-64.  GVW took over from DeVette in 1977.

DeVette's teams won 11 MIAA Championships, while GVW's teams have taken the title 17 times.  Both figures include shared championships.

Now that is continuity in a program!

OK, so as I peruse the MIAA men's basketball website, I'm narrowing down the list of GVW replacements to Duance Bosma, Joel Holstege, Don Overbeek, Andy Phillips, Stephen Cramer and Marcus Vanderheide. Any of those, you think, have aspirations of replacing their mentor on the sidelines? Or is EE the heir apparent for the Flying Dutchmen if and when ol' Glenn steps aside? After all, he was a star, he's a two-time MVP (though he shared one of 'em with Billy Sall) and — drum roll, please — he's already there.
Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm??

Are you serious?  There's not a single guy on that list that's even a coach at this point.

Most posters will remember the Steve Honderd/Wade Gugino matchups of the early 90's, which were just terrific. If Honderd hadn't been at Calvin those years I've got to believe that Wade would have led Hope to at least one Final Four in his time at Hope.

In the 70's, Mark Veenstra (Calvin) and Willie Dawkins (Alma) were both first team All-MIAA four consecutive years together, though their matchups were really team-to-team, not head-to-head, because Dawkins was a 6'3" power forward while Veenstra was a 6'9" post. They never guarded one another except in a help-out situation. Dawkins was a truly outstanding player who typically gets overlooked when people start talking about MIAA greats of the past. I have never looked (here's a job for sac to investigate) but I wonder how many four-time first team all-conference players have ever been named by the MIAA? Dawkins was also a great sprinter for the Scots.

Going back to the 50's, Calvin's Tom Newhof (the Knights' first All-American), at 6'9" butted heads with Hope's fine post player, Paul Benes, who stood either 6'11" or 7'0", depending on who you believe.

I think we have quite a few years before this would even be an issue. I don't think GVW will pull a Paterno or Bowden but he's still in great shape and loves what he does. But the name I think makes more sense on the couple year timeline is Chad Carlson.

I don't think GVW would consider retirement with out a national championship.

That means he'll never retire?   ;D

+k on the find. They're listed as follows:

Duane Bosma, Hope, 93-96
Willie Dawkins, Alma, 74-77
Steve Honderd, Calvin, 90-93
Don Mulder, Hope, 43-48
Jeremy Veenstra, Calvin, 99-03
Mark Veenstra, Calvin, 74-77

Mr. Ypsi

I couldn't find anything on the page to indicate that these were FIRST-team all-MIAA for four years (though I suspect OC_SID is correct - the list would probably be considerably longer if not).

We did this 4 time All MIAA thing last fall.  Not many are able to claim that accomplishment.  That is why some of us veteran posters, and MIAA followers are watching if Caleb Veldhouse can to do it again this year.

Speaking of a replacement coach for Hope Men's basketball I wonder if the Office of President of Hope College is any precedent?

Could the next Hope Men's basketball coach possibly be a CALVIN grad? :) ;) :D :( :o 8) ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :'(

The list is those who were FIRST-team four consecutive years ... I know because I asked a couple years ago because Olivet had a women's soccer player earn first-team his freshman and junior, and second-team as a sophomore and senior ... I wanted to include her on the list, and I was told that the list was just first-team four years.

I suspect the reason is what you said about it being a much longer list as well as this page: http://www.miaa.org/history/hismiaa.html, lists just first-team selections ... I have had to do research to find out all of our all-time All-MIAA selections.

Thanks OC SID.  I think some posters may forget that for some years fr. were not eligible.  Just like the 3 pt. shot wasn't always around, and for several years "dunking" was not kosher. :)
