Weir played well and is a great talent but I would find it difficult to select him as player of the week over Veltema, who's shining performances actually rallied his team to victories this past week.

I can't disagree with you.  He's stepped up big the past week and a half.

Albion deserved to win.  I'll forego any further commentary since it would undoubtedly be laced with profanity.

Sorry, bda.  If it's any consolation, I was hoping Adrian would take care of this one.  :)

Thanks, Civic--yesterday was a frustrating one.  The Bulldogs are going to have to get some things together if they're going to make anything positive happen the rest of the year.

Alma and Adrian may have hit their wall so to speak, both had pretty poor results this week.  The same may have happened to Olivet last night, I hadn't realized it untill looking just now but Olivet has played nothing but tough close games all MIAA season.  That takes a toll mentaly.  Last night I didn't think Olivet stayed in the game between the ears very well.

01/07/09 *HOPE..................  70-79  L
01/10/09 *at Trine..............  70-68  W
01/14/09 *ALBION................  71-73  L
01/17/09 *at Kalamazoo..........  72-65  WOT
1/21/09  *at Calvin.............  60-57  W
01/24/09 *ALMA..................  66-69  L
1/28/09  *at Adrian.............  66-63  W
1-31-09  *at Hope...............  64-92  L

The games with an improved Trine and Albion this week could be their big moment.  I suppose the good news is they get 4 of 6 at home, the bad news is they haven't won at home in the league yet.  I still think they're among the top 4 teams in the MIAA.

Couple stat watching happenings.

*** Peter Bunn missed his first FT of the MIAA season last night.  He's now 27-28 from the stripe.

Here's the all-time single season MIAA list of best FT %
BEST FREE THROW SHOOTING PERCENTAGE
.967    Doug Austin, Alma, 1997-98 (29-30)
.944 Jim Kramer, Alma, 1982-83 (34-36)
.944 Dirk Rhinehart, Kalamazoo, 2000-01 (34-36)
.935 Tom Crawford, Kalamazoo, 1965-66 (43-46)
.933 Mike Winkle, Calvin, 1981-82 (28-30)
.933 Ken Dietz, Olivet, 1984-85 (28-30)

On the whole season Bunn is 49-54, 90.7%.........he's chasing the Hope single season record.  They don't keep a consecutive made stat, but 27 is probably up there.

  1. .891 - Tyler Wolfe (57-64) - 2006-07
  2. .888 - Eric Elliott (95-107) - 1989-90
  3. .873 - Eric Elliott (124-142) - 1990-91
  4. .872 - Tom Dykstra (75-86) - 1968-69
  5. .867 - Eric Elliott (78-90) - 1988-89
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

***  Matt Wayne of Adrian currently is 46-64 or 71.9% in MIAA play, the MIAA single season record is

BEST FIELD GOAL SHOOTING PERCENTAGE
.708    Brandon Crawford, Albion, 2005-06 (106-148)
.705    Steve Honderd, Calvin, 1991-92 (91-129)
.684 Wade Gugino, Hope, 1991-92 (91-133)
.684 Steve Honderd, Calvin, 1989-90 (81-117)

Matt's just ahead of the league minimum, it might be a fight to the end to cross that threshold.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wes Weir, Trine's 4.38 3 pointers per game is way ahead of pace to break the single season MIAA record

THREE-POINTERS SCORED
3.5 Steve Brooks, Adrian, 2001-02 (42 in 12 games)
3.3    Todd Wesche, Adrian, 1996-97 (40 in 12 games)
3.2 Ben Taylor, Adrian, 1996-97 (38 in 12 games)
3.2 Andy Draayer, Calvin, 2004-05 (45 in 14 games)
3.2 Mo Brookins, Tri-State, 2004-05 (45 in 14 games)

Wes needs just 10 more to make this list, 14 more to tie the record.

Scoreboard watching.........odd occurance and I don't really know how often it happens.

During the women's game, Hope had five players on the floor who had 4, 3, 2, 1 and 0 points in the game.   If you think about that, thats pretty hard to do.

If David Krombeen or Peter Bunn had made either of their two layups early against Olivet it would have happened again.  Weird.

Odder still, at Calvin's last home game, the scoreboard showed that Calvin had 5 plyaers on the floor with 5,4,197,flibbergith and #$%&* points in the game.  Think about how hard that is!

This game had a chance for some drama when Michael McClary picked up foul #2 at 18:07, felt bad for him a little because there was nothing he could do.  Followed by Jesse Reimink picking up his 2nd foul at 14:20, both were pretty much crap calls.

Maybe the worst officiated game all year....two of the 3 officials were out of their league....McClary didnt deserve either of his first 2 fouls.

Will Bowser made a big difference on the glass....

Well, the youngster(looked like he was young enough to throw a jersey on and play in the JV game) officiated the JV game prior to doing the Varsity and was the subject of ridicule there as well for his poor job. I don't think it is common practice to let an referee officiate back to back games.

hope_hoops1

I agree that the officials were poor.  They took McClary out of the game after 3 minutes with 2 questionable (at best) calls and then followed that up with an equally bad blocking foul against Reimink.  Not the best start, but the bad calls seemed even for the game.

I really liked what I saw from the Hope team on Saturday.  Strong defensive effort from everyone and attacking the hoop on offense.  Nelis in particular was outstanding off of the bench, but everyone who came in brought the same intensity and determination to get to the basket.  Even with Bunn having an off-shooting game (he even missed a free throw), Hope's offense didn't seem to miss much of a beat.  I've been pleasently surprised by the play of Jungling.  It's obvious he kept himself in terrific shape as he pushes the ball up the court every time he gets it.  He and Krombeen make the fast break much more potent this year than last (not to slight DVS as he was a different type of player and added a dynamic element to the offense with his shooting more so than with his speed)

All in all, the team continues to improve nearly every game out.  Production is becoming more balanced as the younger players are fitting into their roles and gaining confidence.  Should be a great second half to the season.  After this week, it will be an obvious two-team race with scary draws for the conference tournament with all of the streaky play in the conference.

Wes Weir player of the week.  Several other players had notable weeks as well.  It doesn't hurt having back to back good games against the top teams in the league.

Wow, I missed that!  Must have been the 4 straight games of bball numbed my keen sense of observation!  :)  That is unusual.  Odd as it is to say, I think the best officiated game I've seen so far this season was the Hope/Calvin one.  Let's hope that any new officials are also hitting their stride and making some improvements...

Based on my experiences with soccer officiating, my hunch would be that he was an emergency fill-in for a no-show for one game or the other.
