For those who don't know, AJ is a football recruit (QB) for the Chips and broke a few state playoff records for Holland Christian this past fall.

I see he's on the HC basketball roster, how is he at hoops?

In Drew Yancey's absense, Albion has had 3 players step up with career highs in the last two games.

Dave Stasiak had 22 against Alma, and Saturday Andre Bridges and Robbie Clark each had 17.

Its always interesting to see how teams react to injuries to important players, some teams go in the tank, others rally around the injury and have players who fill the void.  When and if the injured players returns, they're often better teams.

Albion and Calvin both seem to have taken path #2.

I'm not sure Albion will get Yancey back this season.  But I'm certain KVS has to be happy with Matt Veltema's play in Veldhouse's absense.

Last I heard, he was still sidelined, recovering from an ankle injury during fb championship game. No sense rushing him back, if he goes back at all. HC doing OK without him.

He's playing again.  I believe he is the 6th or 7th man on his team.  I give him credit for playing.  I don't like the emphasis of specializing in one sport.

He's a decent basketball player, but nothing special. He IS something special at QB however. Most seasoned observers have said he's the best HS QB to play in West MI in a long, long time. Better than Nichols or Cousins. I saw him play a couple of times and he is the real deal. I couldn't believe he wasn't getting major offers. His stats:

                     Rushing                  Passing
Statistics     Yds            TD         Pct              Yds    TD    Int
2008 (Sr.)    1,250        25         69.3          3,600    40    4

Additionally, he's a 4.0 student and crushed his ACT.
One Mississippi, Two Mississippi...

And if your initial congrats mean it had already been (temporarily) p. 1300, I did it thrice! ;D

HC is right, the kid is a fabulous high school QB. I think CMU got a steal. I've seen him play and he can do it all--a great arm with a quick release, very accurate even when on the run, and a load to take down when he tucks the ball. He was also a terrific linebacker and I understand he holds all of Holland Christian's weightlifting records. I understand he wants to be a pre-med student and people who know him expect he will suceed at that too. He single-handedly beat Detroit Country Day in the state finals. My son was a decent high school football player who follows the prep ranks faithfully, and he claims AJ is the best athlete he's ever seen on a West Michigan high school football field. I've also seen Westendorp play hoops and it's pretty clear he doesn't touch a basketball except during the season. If he concentrated on hoops he probably would be a pretty decent high school player but football is clearly his sport.
