Not being at the game, and not knowing the players, but respecting the coach might lead one to believe different situations, and different players require different reaction or treatment.  On more than one occassion I have seen/heard GVW or KVS and even Turner lecture one player after a "boneheaded" move when it was obvious to all watching or listening that it was being directed at more than just that one specific guy.

Hope outscored Kzoo at the freethrow line by  22 , so that should please the conspiracy theorists.

35-10 FT discrepancy.  Kzoo finishes with 6 more FG's than Hope.
you did note, of course, that a lot of those came during the final five minutes when Hope's lead was somewhat tenuous and Kalamazoo fouled on purpose to stop the clock and get the ball back.
I'm Chevy Chase and you're not.

2006-2009 is going to be the most games in the shortest period of time Hope and Calvin have ever faced each other.

They've met 13 times, with #14 Wed and a possible matchup somewhere in the MIAA Tournament.  So around 1 out of every 10 games these two teams have played over the last 4 years will have been vs each other.

There are 3 players who have seen action in all 13 games.......Calvin's Caleb Veldhouse, Dustin Smith and Tyler Zoerhoff...........Tim Katt has been on the Calvin roster for all those games, but has played in 7.

Some career numbers.......all players have a 4-9 record vs Hope

Caleb Veldhouse
FG: 66-174, 37.9%
3pt: 22-66, 33.3%
FT: 34-41, 82.9%
Rebs: 34, 2.6
Pts: 192,  14.8 pts
Assists: 25
Turnovers: 34

Dustin Smith
FG: 17-76, 22.4%
3pt: 5-27, 18.5%
FT:  6-8, 75%
Rebs: 39  3.0
Pts: 42  3.2
Assists: 20
Turnovers: 24

Tyler Zoerhoff
FG:  12-29, 41.4%
3pt:  1-5, 20%
FT: 11-19, 57.9%
Rebs: 33, 2.5
Pts: 36, 2.8
Assists:  11
Turnovers: 21

A couple notes, Veldhouse has started every game for Calvin, the number of shots Caleb has taken has been fairly consistently between 12 and 15 with highs of 19 and 20.  He's scored in double digits in all but 2 games, his very first one and the November meeting in 2007.  A high of 23 last year.

Dustin Smith and Tyler Zoerhoff:   I didn't track minutes but neither of these two has played nearly as many as Caleb.  Tyler has been more of a role player, and Dustin has never been more than option #3 in Calvin's offense behind guys like Draayer, Trewhella, Griffin, Veldhouse and Mantel.  Dustin has been a bigger part of the games the last 3 years.

On the Hope side, only Jesse Reimink has been on the varsity for all 13 games, he missed one his Fr year because of injury/illness.   Jesse's personal record vs Calvin is 9-3, his team has gone 9-4

Jesse Reimink
FG:  42-98, 42.9%
3pt: 15-44, 34.1%
FT: 13-15, 86.7%
Reb: 67, 5.2
Pts:  113, 9.4
Assists: 24
Turnovers: 14

Jesse has had 2 really outstanding games vs Calvin scoring 25 and 20, on those nights he was 12-14 from trey combined.  Untill this year Jesse was never the main focus of Hope's offense.  Jesse also had a game early his Soph year where he barely played due to foul trouble.

I know for me alot of the details of the 13 games are kind of a blur........thats simply a lot of games for two rivals to be playing each other.  All four of these guys have had a very unique Hope v. Calvin experience.

Wednesday night should be another typical Calvin/Hope rivalry game.  I expect a hard fought contest from both teams and plenty of juvenile cheers from the student section, and a flurry of stupid stats about the rivalry prior to tipoff.  Calvin by 7.

It is beginning.

Hopester

I don't know if there is a group of fans in the history of D3 college basketball that gets picked on by others as much as Hope... ever.
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

There is for me because I don't really talk to many Hope fans outside this message board (nor do I really know any).

By attending games, I will say the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Hope fans when I am at a Calvin/Hope game is "loyal."

Anyone watch the Missouri-Kansas game just now?  It looked like a Calvin-Hope game....

sac

Missouri-Kansas has always been a good rivalry in hoops.  When it was the old Big 8 conference, it was frequently Kansas and Missouri at the top of the standings.

One of my Western trips I made sure to stop in Lawrence and Columbia and check out Allen Fieldhouse and the Hearn Center.  Unfortunately both were locked.

Sac -

Based on the comments yesterday regarding a KZoo education, I thought I needed to help you out with your math from the stats below.  First of all, the stats are very, very interesting and surprising, however, the total points don't jive with the stats:

Caleb Veldhouse  (44*2) + (22*3) + 34 = 188 points, not 192

Dustin Smith (12*2) + (5*3) + 6 = 45 points, not 42

Jesse Reimink (27*2) + (15*3) + 13 = 112 points, not 113

Unfortunately, I did get up every MWF at 8:00am to attend Calc I, II and III.  It has finally paid off!

Q:  What's the difference between a Hope fan and a baby?
A:  Eventually the baby stops whining

Q:  What's the definition of an "eternal optimist"
A:  A Hope fan waiting at the airport waiting for the team to return with the National
     Championship trophy.

A first grade teacher explains to her class she is a Hope College fan.  She asks her students to raise their hands if their Hope fans, too.

Not really knowing what a Hope fan was, but wanting to be like their teacher, hands explode into the air. There is , however, one exception.  A girl named Jessica has not gone along with the crowd.

The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different.  "Because I'm not a Hope fan."

"Then," asks the teacher, "What are you?"

"Why I'm proud to be a Calvin fan.", boasts the little girl.

The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red.  She asks Jessica why she is a Calvin fan.

"Well, my Mom and Dad are Calvin  fans and I'm a Calvin fan, too."

The teacher is now angry.  "That's no reason," she says loudly.  "What if your mom was a moron and your dad was a moron, what would you be then?"

A pause, and a smile.  "Then," says Lucy, "I'd be a Hope fan."

Q:  What does the average Hope student get on their SAT
A:  Drool

Q:  What is the only sign of intelligent life in Holland?
A:  Calvin College:  36 miles ahead

Q:  What do you call a Hope fan with half a brain?
A:  Gifted.

When I was in high school, a friend of mine traveled to Holland for a public speaking competition.  He delivered the speech of his life, and was fortunate to squeek out a
victory.

His prize was a $50 savings bond and a plaque.  The runner-up got a 4 year scholarship to Hope.

Many years ago, Albert Einstein, visited  Michigan for a nationwide conference on science.
Einstein was famous for his ability to converse with all people, regardless of their intelligence or interests.

At a reception following the conference, he approached 3 men and asked the first, "Sir,
what is your IQ?"

"148," the Calvin professor answered, and Einstein launched into a lengthy discussion about quantum physics and relativity.

He turned to the 2nd man and asked "what is your IQ sir?"

"105," the Albion professor answered,  and Einstein chatted with the man briefly about recent changes in agricultural technology.

Einstein turned to the 3rd man and asked, "and, you sir, what is your IQ?

"52" the man answered.

Einstein broke into a broad grin, clapped the man on the shoulder, and said, "Go Hope."

Q:  How do you make a Hope fan laugh on Monday?
A:  Tell him a joke on Friday

Q:  What's the difference between Big Foot and a smart Hope fan?
A:  There have been Big Foot sightings

Q:  What did the Hope fan use for birth control?
A:  His personality

Enjoy the rivalry!!

I thought some of those were pretty funny, hopefully no one gets bent out of shape reading them.  Even though I'm a Calvin Alum most of those are of the generic type and could easily but turned right around by replacing "Hope" with "Calvin", all of those that is except any of the jokes about National Championships.  ;D

Anyways, tomorrow should be another great game, too bad it won't be available via video over the internet similar to Albion.  Albion has raised the bar for both Calvin and Hope and they did it without the luxury of a new modern facility.  Come on dutch schools lets get this taken care of, video broadcasts via the web, make it happen.

Forgot to ask in the last post but where did Section7 come to the board from because S7's sole purpose seems to be trying to poke, prod and in general just be a nuisance to all posters on the board lately.

Major kudos to CalvinChelseaMom for not taking the bait on Section7's post that had a couple redeeming points, otherwise was completely asinine in "calling" people (from various schools) out left and right on totally basisless, unsupported and unfounded points.
