Better than a male cheerleader... and lots better than having male cheerleaders.

I don't know, that little guy from Aurora was pretty entertaining in 2005.  Perhaps entertaining at his expense, but entertaining none the less.

Couple things stood out:

"not a goofy thing like some other schools"... What are they trying to say here???  ;)

I wouldn't take a personal read into it.  Maybe its just that I try to keep "Dutch" out of my mind, but I read that sentence and Dancing Trees, Otto the Syracuse Orange, and the Western Kentucky blob thing come to mind.

=GOOFY

I'm with you... that's why I extended the  ;).

I grew up in up state NY and was an "orange" fan... What the hell is that thing?

So I guess it really is the end for 'Cal' and his neck brace.

Couple things stood out:

"not a goofy thing like some other schools"... What are they trying to say here???  ;)

"We also wanted a knight with the helmet on; no face, so that we could keep it gender neutral."... A gender neutral knight? Huh?? Like the androgynous knights of the round table???

" We wanted it strong but not too ominous. " So more like a female shot putter...  :o

Just kidding!!! Glad to see an effort like this.

So are cheerleaders next?  ;) ;)

I don't imagine King Arthur would be impressed. Hard to keep it gender neutral when it's not. Maybe Calvin should bring back the "Knighties" nickname just so the ladies can have the female version of the mascot. ::)

I created a new board for those who wish to tear each other eyes out, maybe this way we can keep this board clear for some better discussion.

Ha!  Funny that there are no other posts, but 24 other views in the 28 minutes since SAC created the board.

I got bored, so i broke the silence :)

The Wikipedia article has some interesting info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syracuse_Orange

The thing that jumped out (unrelated to the actual mascot): Prior to 1890 the school's colors were rose pink and pea green.  OUCH!!!

The female counterpart to 'knight' is 'dame' - but considering that term's usage in slang, I can understand the reluctance of the women's teams! ;)

I grew up in up state NY and was an "orange" fan... What the hell is that thing?

For many decades Syracuse University's mascot was the Saltine Warrior, a student who dressed in full Iroquois regalia. Although the local Onondaga tribe didn't have any problem with it, the Saltine Warrior was nevertheless one of the first American Indian mascot victims of political correctness. The Saltine Warrior retained his name, but was changed from an Onondaga Iroquois brave to a Roman legionary (highlighting the profusion of Roman place names in central New York, as well as the large Italian-American community in Syracuse). For some reason I've never quite fathomed, political correctness killed that mascot as well.

After the Roman version of the Saltine Warrior was forced to hang up his horsehair-plumed helmet, leather cuirass, and gladius, Syracuse University introduced the current mascot ... which is, of course, that roly-poly fruitlike abomination that you see in the pictures above. Apparently, the school's administration figured that since there's no citrus growers in upstate New York, nobody would protest this particular SU mascot. Of course, plenty of people have protested upon the grounds that it makes SU a laughingstock, but, like the school's football team, being a laughingstock is not considered to be an impediment to the school's public image as far as the SU administration is concerned.

I think they should unveil this on a night when there's not a full house.  If it's not quite ready, that mascot will be fodder for the Hope students.

The scoreboard wasn't quite ready for prime time.  Don't make the same mistake twice.

Good point.  Some tattered fabric dragging from the shoe may be mistaken for toilet paper.  How Embarassing!
