I don't remember anything about a Smokin' Joe inspired tiff involving Hennink. I'm not saying it didn't happen, I just don't know anything about it. Over the years there certainly have been a few incidents where players between MIAA schools have gotten chippy with one another but I think the conference history involving player fights is surprisingly clean--even admirable. In fact, the last time I can remember seeing an MIAA game where a player actually squared off was the first time Calvin and Hope played at the old Fieldhouse. It was the final game of the 1965-66 season and was Barney Steen's last game as coach. Naturally, the conference title was on the line. Calvin had Ed Douma running things from the backcourt while Hope had the late Floyd Brady and future Calvin College English professor, Roy Anker, on their roster. The Knights also had a talented and bruising freshmen from Chicago Christian, Bill DeHorn, who took umbrage at something that happened under the basket close to the balcony overhang. I don't recall who it was from the Hope team DeHorn wanted a piece of but as best I remember it from my perch overhead, Big Bill dragged the Hope player completely under the overhang and was just beginning to give a pounding when players from both teams intervened. It took the efforts of every Calvin player on the floor to keep DeHorn away from his opponent while things cooled down. Calvin went on to win 79-72 and took the title that day.

On another note, I found it interesting and hugely ironic that this news occurred at almost exactly the same time of my post from about a week ago.

I think that's the first time I've ever seen a female basketball player's weight listed.
I'd like to borrow her scale. ;)

Congratulations are in order to Wes Weir, Trine who has broken the MIAA record for 3 pointers per game.

Wes now has 50 on the MIAA season, zero this week would still give him a per game average of 3.57

THREE-POINTERS SCORED
4.17  WES WIER, Trine, 2008-09  (50 in 12 games, two to go)
3.5 Steve Brooks, Adrian, 2001-02 (42 in 12 games)
3.3    Todd Wesche, Adrian, 1996-97 (40 in 12 games)
3.2 Ben Taylor, Adrian, 1996-97 (38 in 12 games)
3.2 Andy Draayer, Calvin, 2004-05 (45 in 14 games)
3.2 Mo Brookins, Tri-State, 2004-05 (45 in 14 games)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

***  Matt Wayne of Adrian currently is 69-98 or .704 FG shooting in MIAA play, the MIAA single season record is

BEST FIELD GOAL SHOOTING PERCENTAGE
.708    Brandon Crawford, Albion, 2005-06 (106-148)
.705    Steve Honderd, Calvin, 1991-92 (91-129)
.704   Matt Wayne, Adrian
.684 Wade Gugino, Hope, 1991-92 (91-133)
.684 Steve Honderd, Calvin, 1989-90 (81-117)

Matt's right on track to place himself on this impressive list.  Matt took 21 combined shots the last time vs this weeks opponents Hope and Olivet, looks like he'll get lots of opportunities.

Hey MIAA fans.

I'm new here, though I've been lurking for a few months. A sophmore at Albion College, I will try to provide some representation for the Britons, who are very quietly tied for second in the conference.

I'll do my best to turn off the purple and gold machine that I have running in me almost non stop before I post, but, sometimes things will leak through. ;)

Thanks all of you for all your insightful comments regarding the league. It's this kind of personal and honest communication that makes being in Division III and the MIAA so cool.

Welcome to the board, RB.  We no doubt will benefit from some purple and gold perspective here.  The Brits are coming to Grand Rapids this week, and let us know if you'll be travelling with them.

Concerning fights and cheap shots.  I admire Tom Crean at Indiana.  After looking at the film he suspended Dumes indefinitely.  Good way to handle it.  I don't think Dumes will try anything anymore.  Concerning Calvin-Hope fights.  It wasn't a big one, but the tangle at mid court at the Civic Center in Holland in 2002 or 2003.  Jeremy Veenstra, Rob Holleman, Phil Visser involved with Hope players.  One hope player ejected for throwning a punch.

Hey everyone. Mea Culpa for over-reacting last week. Thanks for the reminder, NW Hope--a little wine, some dark chocolate (and several kind emails) helped me calm down.

Welcom RB.   :)  Always good to get some inside information.
NB:  I vaguely remember some tense moments between Kazoo, and Calvin players in the early 90's.  The incident that stands out the most for me was the game when Honderd set the single game scoring record.  He was getting beat up a bit, and got a cut on the elbow or arm.  He was bleeding, and had a bloody jersey.  Hacklin got close to postal trying to get the action stopped, and came close to getting t'd when he objected to the ref's stopping the game to allow Hondo to change jersey's, get wiped off, and a bandage applied.  Not a fight, but definitly a contact sport.  The issue was resolved with Calvin being charged a time out.
OK:  I remember the incident with De Horn at that game, but don't recall the Hope player.  For those who wonder about De Horn he still shares the rebounds per game 17.1 record.  About 6'4'', 235 lbs, he would stand flat footed under the basket, and do a two handed reverse slam.

Congrats to Andrew Holms for being named MIAA player of the week for the first time in his career!

I know everyone hated this when I brought it up last time, but I am bringin' it back.  It appears that Calvin is continuing the mysterious home shooting woes.

Through 6 home games: Calvin 0.383  Opponent 0.382
Through 6 home games: Calvin 0.490 Opponent 0.396

Calvin's home high FG%: 0.439 vs. Kzoo  (only 2 games above .400)
Calvin's road low FG%:  0.455 at Trine  (all 6 games above 0.450 and 3 games 0.500 or above)

Calvin has been out-shot 4 times at home but only 1 time on the road.

Thanks everyone, I can't make it to Grand Rapids this Wednesday as I have class during game time :(

I think the Brits have a good chance of knocking off Calvin if they can get a handle on John Mantel and keep him from dominating inside. If they can force Calvin outside, Albion usually does a good job of not allowing too many open jumpers outside, and as has been noted, apparently Calvin struggles shooting at home.

On offense, the Brits will be their usual team oriented selves, no telling who might have the hot hand on any given night.

That all being said though, I'm not entirely sure that it's even in their interest to win. I'm not saying they should try to lose by any means, but, a loss might help them in a few ways.

For starters, a loss would lock them into the 3 seed, which looks like a 1st round MIAA tournament match up against Kalamazoo. While the 2nd seed looks like it will play Alma (tough this could all change), I think Alma is a more dangerous team than Kalamazoo.

2 seed or 3 seed, Albion will more than likely meet Hope in the semis. Interesting ti see if the Calvin fans that will be in attendance will stay quiet or maybe give the Brits a little lift.

Lastly, Albion has won 6 in a row, and 9 of 10. Last year Albion won their last 12, but I sensed that they lost their momentum over time. it just seems to be bad luck to go into a conference tournament on a big win streak. Perhaps a late season loss would serve as the kind of fire in the belly that might result in a surprise in the conference tournament.

P.S. Congrats to Andrew Holms on being names POTW, he's been the heart and soul of the team and plays with unbelievable passion. He's certainly deserving IMO.

A little basketball to be played yet before that scenario works out but trust me, if it does go down that way, your Brits will have plenty of support, if you know what I mean.

Hmmmmm... root for Albion, or against Hope.  That's an easy one.

Let it never be said that Calvin will not oblige with plenty of motivation.  But I would not wish too loudly for that, my Union Jack waving friend, as it is likely that the team you lose to will be one that you have to face in order to make it through the tournament.  Although this board has debated whether it is more or less likely to be able to beat a team you have already beat twice in the year, I would see more psychological benefits from winning the game than from losing.
