I think the Brits have a good chance of knocking off Calvin if they can get a handle on John Mantel and keep him from dominating inside. If they can force Calvin outside, Albion usually does a good job of not allowing too many open jumpers outside, and as has been noted, apparently Calvin struggles shooting at home.

The only guys that have been able to control John have been wearing zebra stripes.  If John picks up early fouls and has to sit, Calvin can have trouble getting things going.  I haven't seen any player or team stop John yet this year.

Exactly! If John wants to, he can dominate any game. Period. There isn't a team in the league with a player who can "handle" him!

In any new gym it takes a while for homecourt advantage for shooters and such to really develop. Calvin hasn't had a whole lot of time to shoot in this building, remember.

Not necessarily true.  When Hope began play in the DeVos, they did so with something like 2 weeks of practices there before the season began - not all that different than what Calvin has gone through.  The Dutchmen in their first 6 home games shot .483 from the field, in wins over Elmhurst, Andrews, Wheaton, Carthage, Madonna, and Aquinas.  Now Andrews and Madonna are not the toughest opponents, but even if you through those two out, Hoppe still averaged .481.

I bring this up because I think the change in venue has been similar for these two teams, and I'm curious about the difference in adapting.

The Daily Dose has the detailed and interesting projections of WashU grad Pat Abegg which, among other things, does projections of likely Pool C candidates, those who are safe (even if upset in their conference tournament), and those who are on the bubble. The link is here:

http://d3blogs.com/d3hoops/

I found this part to be of some interest:

Who's safe?
These are teams that would get in even with a loss in the conference finals, no matter what. There can only really be nine locks if there are 18 at-large bids.
St. Thomas
Ithaca
Puget Sound
Franklin and Marshall
UW-Whitewater
Middlebury
Worcester Polytech
Wheaton (Ill.)
Richard Stockton

Who's next?
For each team above which wins its conference tournament and automatic bid, a team from this list joins the ranks of the safe.
Capital
Buena Vista
Texas-Dallas
Calvin
Farmingdale State
Rhode Island College
St. Lawrence
Bridgewater State
Trinity (Texas)

I think Alma is a more dangerous team than Kalamazoo.

This line here shows just how crazy the ol' MIAA really is this year!

Kalamazoo has swept Alma this year. Not sure about your logic RB.  They are a much better team than the first half (80-52).  K played two very good basketball games last week. Their defensive intensity has increased and are rebounding the ball much better.  If McCain doesn't foul out, that game on Saturday is a different story.

I certainly can see them winning two this week.

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

With all due respect to Mantel, he's picked up a bad habit that I hope the refs will begin to recognize before someone gets hurt.  I've seen it in at least three games now (2 w/ Hope and 1 w/ Albion), and it's disturbing.  The move is a stiff-armed "clothesline" across the throat of the opposing player, and in no way seems "accidental."  But since all three times I've seen it he's gotten away with it, there certainly is no incentive for him to change it...yet.   :-\

Sheesh, GK, I thought better of you.  What exactly is so vengeful about pointing out a dangerous situation and a concern for players from other teams (not only my own)?  I was careful to say I believe it is just a bad habit, not something done out of an intent to harm, or rage, etc.   I guess it is true -- unless you're praising Calvin you might as well shut up.  Hmmm...  (Theologically, that's a problem Calvinites tend to have in general, I guess).

Good reminder, hope1.  And add Dan Cox to that list as well.  Although he's listed as a junior, he will graduate this year.  Thanks, seniors, for some awesome memories!

Your original quote uses the phrase "in no way seems "accidental."  I didn't interpret that statement as you being "careful to say it was not something done out of an intent to harm."

Before this turns into another long drawn out bruhaha.......can everybody just chill with interpreting stuff.

Before long someone's calling someone jealous.......then I have to say you're just jealous we aren't jealous, then the Hope superiority comes out, then I have to call you a hypocrite, before long someone's calling someone arrogant........and somewhere in south central Michigan, Stinger sits back and lights a cigar.

Stick with talking about your own teams and everybody will be just fine. :)

I was reminded in the harshest way this week just how incredibly unimportant and trivial this stuff really is, thanks enjoy your week :)

As for the JV, they are playing the team that was their stiffest competition during the first go-around. I am sure there would be nothing Adrian would like to do more than spoil Hope's 12-0 record. Come early and support them for their last game of the year.  It will be interesting to see if any of the sophomore's (Dickerson, Keyser, Stegman, or even Carrol who moved up after Carter's injury but played minimally) will make the team next year. They each have their upsides. Logan Neil will probably be a shoe-in and not because of his dad, he is a quality player that could help out next year.  Word has it that Nystrom is thinking about staying in Sweden next year. If true, that is too bad as he is a very athletic, pure scorer that maybe would have made up for his shortcomings on D.  Must be tough to be away from your family for this long of a period.
