MVPs help their teams win titles, not miss key shots when it counts the most. Mantel has come of age this year & has my MVP vote, although admittedly biases.

Again, this comes down to the whole definition of "Most Valuable Player."  Is it the best player on the team that gets the farthest, the most outstanding statistically, the one whose team would suffer the most if you removed him from it?

For category 1, Mantel is the obvious choice.
For category 2, Reimink is the very obvious choice.
For category 3, Remink is probably the choice, although cases can certainly be made for Mantel and maybe McClary.

Mantel is only the obvious choice in category 1 if you assume Calvin "goes the farthest."

Exactly right.  At this point of the season, Calvin has.  The rest is yet to be determined.

Well, not to cause unnecessary trouble, but at this point, I'd say each team in the conference has gone equally far.  I see what you're getting at, though.

Reimink has played  722 minutes, and fouled 60 times or once every 12 minutes.

Mantel has played 538 minutes, and fouled 47 times or once every 11.44 minutes.

Another player to compare to Mantel and Reimink:

Brandon McClary has played 771 minutes and fouled only 37 times or once every 20.84 minutes. I was doing research on this topic today, and Brandon has not fouled out in any of his 48 career games at Olivet. And, he has only had four fouls in two career games.

Then, this clearly makes Mantel the MVP.  Not such a dirty player as Reimink. ;D

Wiz:  The point I was trying to make, and I think OK reinforced it was be very careful before you jump to what looks like the "logical" conclusion based on statistics.  I think Sac has proven the point more than once that the more numbers you look at to try to reach a conclusion it only points to more numbers you need to consider.
The real point is neither Mr Reimink nor Mr Mantel can be called or proven a "dirty" or clean player by numbers that don't give any indication of what the foul was or under what circumstances it occurred.   Just because someone claims one player or another "is getting away with murder" doesn't make it a fact.  Over time the numbers even out, and these two individuals prove that point.
Personally I wish both Mr. Reimink, and Mr. Mantel were more assertive, but that is just me, and I like winning bball games.  These guys are who they are, and both seem like darned nice young men.  Yes, basketball is just a game. :)

I agree, but it is always fun to get a little discussion going.

Pat I don't think the HS is buying the Civic, just renting it.

Thanks, though I'm not sure what I said could've led you to believe I thought they were buying it.

Interesting decision announced by Holland Christian officials today.  No more Maroon's games at the DeVos

http://www.hollandsentinel.com/sports/x82778264/HC-hoops-will-return-to-Civic-Center

I agree.  However, from reading the article it seems like everyone is parting friends.  Is the city or HCHS going to spend some $$ sprucing the Civic up?

"We have started down the road of renovating the high school building and campus. We think within the next five years or so we need to do something on our campus."
Declining attendance made continuing playing at DeVos Fieldhouse not financially feasible for Holland Christian, even though the cost of playing there has remained the same, Vos said.

My question is this: how will it become financially feasible within the next five years or so to build a new facility altogether?

HC has a good sized gym.  I remember it as only having bleachers on one side.  If they installed bleachers on both sides I think they could hold 1800-2000 people in there.  They have also just completed a $30 million dollar renovation of the HS.  Right now isn't the time to have another fund drive.

I don't think HCHS worries much about the timing of fund raising drives. They had the $30 million in hand in no time for the last addition. They have a donor or two with very deep pockets - at least one of whom has been a Calvin benefactor as well.

I haven't heard anything they have about plans for a new gym. I'd be surprised if they put a new set of bleachers in the old one, but it's certainly big enough if they want to. I just don't think it would be a great basketball venue.

Due to the overall decrease (recession) in the MIAA, each teams MVP will need to be transferred to Calvin's team.  This will create a stimulus for that sector of the league, which should create more interest and players for all the teams throughout the league.  This bailout was passed quickly by the MIAA and the NCAA and signed into law effective immediately, despite Calvin President Galen Byker flying his Calvin Corporate plane (the "Van Noord jet") to the meeting.  What Calvin decides to do with these new players is none of your business, and they will not tell you even if you ask.  Please blindly deposit your players at the Spoelhof Center.  Thank you.

Unfortunately these players will then "disappear into thin air", never to produce another single point, rebound, or assist.  They will however burden each of us with enough "fouls" to last into our great-grandchildren's generation.

For the fouls part to work out there will need to be a new oversight committee formed.  The prior regulators will need to be thrown out of office and this new committee of three will be given their black and white striped shirts.

Hard to more assertive when you arent a guard....you are depending on others to get you the ball...and both players are having defenses designed to not let them get the ball.

You make a good point on needing to get the ball.  My point was once they have the ball they could be more assertive, but that is purely a personal opinion.
OC SID.  I only cited the two players as I was surprised how close the numbers came out.  Mr. Mc Clary is definitely in a very elite group of individuals.  I does reinforce my contention a good 5 doen't necessarily have to "throw his weight and size around".  Foot work and brains goes a long ways even in bball.

The following is part of a larger article from the Chronicle for Higher Education:

Calvin College recently suspended a student for a year after he purportedly posted an offensive message on his Facebook profile and then refused to post an apology when the dean's office instructed him to do so.  Tony Harris, a sophomore at the Christian Reformed Church-affiliated college, said he was in a restaurant with two friends last fall, without access to the Internet, when his Facebook "status" message was updated to read, "Tony is laughing at that dumb ho. That's why her and that marshmallow-ass boyfriend needs to get a life because I [expletive ] his [expletive] and she got an abortion."

Mr. Harris said he did not write the message, a position he has maintained throughout a lengthy disciplinary process. He said he had shared his password with a female Calvin student whom he dated last summer. The couple broke up in the fall, and Mr. Harris said he suspects she logged into his account and wrote the status update herself, presumably to frame him. He said he rarely uses Facebook and noticed only when an adviser told him of the offensive language that his status had been updated several times since the breakup without his knowledge.

Reprimanding students for unbecoming use of social media is not unusual at Calvin. The college's "Policy on Responsible Use of Technology" forbids "any use of Web life (Facebook, MySpace, etc.) that is contradictory to the principles of the college codes of conduct."  end.

Watch what you post on D3Hoops, undergrads!!

Reprimanding students for unbecoming use of social media is not unusual at Calvin?  Holy sh**, Batman!
