Matt Wayne, Adrian set a new standard for FG shooting % in a single season and tops this very impressive list of past MIAA greats

15. Eric Elliott, Hope, 87-91 813

I throw this list up to illustrate just how difficult it is to find your name on this list these days.  Thats the career points list for MIAA games.  This year the MIAA graduates 3 pretty prolific scorers in Jesse Reimink, Caleb Veldhouse and Desmond Young.

Jesse finishes with 621 career points, which as you can see is nowhere near the top 15.

Caleb finished with 791 career points, just shy of makeing the list.

Desmond Young finishes with 742, again just shy but Desmond only played 3 years in the MIAA.  Had he played four and hit his average of 17.6 pts per game.  Desmond would have finished with around 989 points, and would rank as the 6th best scorer in MIAA history.  Thats an impressive place to be.

i think wed night you could see some really good games  with alma at hope they will try to slow it down a little and trine at calvin it could be closer then what people think the trine radio person said they think they will beat calvin wed night
i love hope  sports all of them are really great to watch

We all love points on the scoreboard and it is a lot more fun looking at the offensive stats.  However, I am going to throw out a curve here and ask who is the best defensive player in the MIAA this year.  Now let's remember there are very few stats you can look at to prove your point, so everyone needs to stay open minded with the different opinions expressed.

sac

There were a few good defensive performances, but I'm not sure any one individual was responsible.

The first one that came to mind for me was seeing J.C. Cruse hound Jordan Redditt into a 2-14 9 point game up at Alma..........but then JC didn't play this weekend and Redditt only scored 9 points again.

Here's a couple off the top of my head, but I'm not sure any one single individual was the main reason for these performances.   Desmond Young and Caleb Veldhouse were shutout from the floor at Calvin.

Hope did a respectable defensive number on the McClary brothers, especially on the rebounding side of things.   Holding both well under their averages twice.
http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/0809/0107olho.htm
http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/0809/0131oliv.htm

Calvin did a nice job on Jesse Reimink making him work really hard in both games.

http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/0809/0211caho.htm

Albion's season probably turned the night they hosted Hope, yet Hope still broke out to shoot 56% in the second half.  But that was one of the best nights of effort defense I can recall this year.  Very comparable to the two Hope/Calvin games.
http://miaa.org/mbb/stats/0809/m204hoab.htm

I didn't think the defense played in the league this year was overall very good, at least three teams were actually really bad in my eyes.   There were good moments and performances, but this years best defensive team Calvin wouldn't compare favorably with any of the really good Hope, Calvin or Albion defenses we've seen in the last 4 or 5 seasons, not to my eyes or on the stat sheets.

any truth to the rumor of another "norolike" virus on campus?  Was at NH Brewery for dinner and heard some students talking about friends violently sick yesterday.  Needless to say, I lost my appetite.  If true, hopefully no players hit.

League  Overall
W L   Avg. Opp.     Margin ( My nuimber)
Calvin        12 2  71.2 62.2      -4
Hope         11 3  76.4 66.2      -10.2
Albion         9 5   70.2 65.8      -4.4
Olivet         7 7    67.6 70.2     +2.6
Kalamazoo 5 9    65.9 69.5     +3.6
Adrian        5 9    69.5 71.3      +1.8
Trine          3 11   67.5 73.8     +6.3

The above numbers are copied from the MIAA site.  They show a defensive range in points allowed from 62.2 to 73.8.  A quick check indicated the low was lower this year than 07-08, but seems about normal for most of the years I checked.   I added the margin number to the right just to see if this would give an indication if any one team was superior offensively or defensively.  Everyone can draw their own conclusions.
I think the Alma slow down game, combined with the typical Albion play, plus poor offensive performance (especially by Calvin, and for game played at Van Noord) may have kept the numbers low.  It just seemed to me every week we had lots of close games, and few blow outs, but that is typical for the MIAA year in, and year out.

Sorry,  I have tried several times to get the columns justified, and then when I post it has moved. :)
This may be trouble the "smiley" face feature seems to be broken.

Margin of victory really doesn't tell you much about what kind of defense a team is playing.  Its to easy to skew those numbers.

Take Hope for example

These were the margins of Hope's road wins (an increible set of numbers by themselves)

Adrian  +4
Albion   -2
Alma     +2
Calvin   -1
Kzoo     +9
Olivet    +9
Trine     +3

Not a single one above their season point margin average.  I saw all but 1 of those and in 3 of them I thought Hope played poorly on defense, particularly at Adrian.  In two others I thought they played very good defense......at Albion, at Calvin.

at home
Adrian +18
Albion    +25
Alma      +17
Calvin    -2
Kzoo      +10
Olivet    +28
Trine      +16

Hope only had 5 games above their final point margin.

Lets take the Adrian game as an example of how margin doesn't say a thing about defense played.   Hope won that by 18, pretty good D right?   Adrian scored 79 points, scoring 47 points while shooting 61.5% from the field in the second half.   No one there would call that good defense.

There are alot of numbers I take into account, when/if I get a chance I'll update my stuff and share it.

Not that I've heard, granted I don't live on campus.

Average Season Results
Trine/Calvin - Calvin by 5 (2-0) - Tightest margin: Calvin by 2
Alma/Hope - Hope by 9.5 (2-0) - Tightest margin: Hope by 2
Adrian/Albion - Albion by 1.5 (1-1) - Tightest margin: Adrian by 3
Kzoo/Olivet - Olivet by 1 (1-1) - Tightest margin: Olivet by 7 in OT

This could be a very interesting Tournament.  All four matchups have seen at least one one-posession game.  Only the Alma/Hope matchup has seen a double digit win.  Should Calvin get past Trine, they would be matched up against one of the teams that beat them.  I am still predicting a Calvin/Hope final, but there could be a few "whoa nellys" along the way.

Yes, Just talked to my son on campus and he said that a bunch of guys in Durfee have gotten sick. Probably very premature to say "norolike" virus, but it did hit a bunch of kids pretty quickly! I think that is the dorm that has the sophomores on the Varisty, maybe a conspiracy prior to tomorrow's game ;)

Got a question about the Hope/Trine game. Anyone know why Bowser only played 15 minutes? It wasn't foul trouble, so I wonder if he got hurt?

I guess on the radio they said  Bowser got 'banged up' and needed stitches on his chin.

Who's responsible to provide passion and urgency to the team?  I think it's the coach.

Sometimes the coach can talk until he's blue in the face but players don't take him seriously.  The radio announcer said a few times today this was a meaningless game.  I disagreed with that.  If Calvin had won today and gone on to win the MIAA tournment next week they could have had 16-1 in region record.  Would that record have enabled them to host the 1st round of the NCAA tournament?  I don't know the answer to that but I think that is pretty much out the window now.  I think KVS would have made that very clear that if you keep winning you could give yourselves some opportunities.

To his credit, KVS did comment that he failed to prepare the team and get across to his guys the importance of the game at K.  Not only did the loss yesterday cost them a chance at hosting should they win the MIAA tournament, but may have cost them a Pool C if the fail to win the MIAA tournament.

I agree with a number of other posters, that this MIAA tournament looks to be the most competitive ever.

That is very unfortunate to hear.  I would have stressed the importance of that game the whole trip there.

Anyways, although Calvin and Hope had some close games with Trine and Alma in the regular season, I expect both of them to win comfortably. One thing I have confidence in with KVS, is his ability to get Calvin to play their A-game in the MIAA tourney.  Calvin by 13

And Hope is too good at the DeVos.  Hope by 18.

The other two games...too close to call!
