For the semifinals on Friday (let's assume for a moment it is at Calvin), how is it determined who plays in the 1st game and who plays in the 2nd game.  Also regarding the final on Saturday evening what is the typical tip-off time of that game?

Just trying to plan the weekend trip and that is affected by kids under the age of 5, late nights/games can be rough on the little ones.  Thanks for any replies and info.

I believe that as the host team, Calvin would get the second game.

Saturday would be a 7:30 tip.

Thanks for the reply HopeConvert, appreciate it.

Intangir

Just got back from the Calvin-Trine game.

Calvin has figured out how to shoot at VanNoord.

I believe the score was 40-17 10 minutes in on probably 8-9 three pointers, mostly by Veltema and Rodts.  They finished the game with 15 3's shooting 54% (only 46% FGs though, hah!)

They slowed down quite a bit after that, but nonetheless finally held onto a solid lead for an entire game.  89-54 Calvin.

Hopefully they can play that way the whole weekend, the looked excellent.

Weir, Mislan, and Harris played well for and Trine did pretty well at answering Calvin's 3's, but Calvin put the game away early never looked back.

Kind of a sparse crowd, unfortunately, but quite a few students at least.  The scoreboard worked great and Joust behaved himself!

Should be a great weekend of basketball.  Good luck to everyone!

Dark Knight

It was nice to see the knights put together a good game all around and from end to end. Trish is gonna like that result.

It was also nice to see Schnyders playing again after missing most of the season. He had 7 points (perfect shooting) in 6 minutes.

Veltema and Rodts have been the top scorers for a number of games now.

It sounds as though the Hope game was pretty good -- Alma got Hope's 22-point halftime lead down to 6 points with about three minutes left?

I just returned from the Hope/Alma game.  Alma started the game in a 4-corners offense, was successful for the first ±5 minutes, but then started turning over the ball.  Hope lead by as much as 20. In 2nd half, Alma dropped the 4-corner and played Hope straight up. Alma started hitting 3s and closed to ±6 six points before Hope pulled away to win by 17.  Neither Bowser [Bosch started] or Venema played; I'm not sure they dressed.  Don't know if it was because of the new flu outbreak at Hope.  Nelis spelled Osborne in great fashion and Dan Cox had ±14 points.   Because of the slow pace and few fouls in the first half, gvw did not substitute until about the 7 minute mark of the first half.  Ty Tanis had 5 3s for Hope [hopefully The Titanic has risen from the icy waters of the bench just in time for the Tournament.]

I am impressed with Alma's new coach.  He has his act together and his team pays attention.  Things might be interesting in future trips to Alma.

The VanNoord shooting curse was on holiday tonight as the Knights pounded Trine 89-54 in the first laugher ever played by the men's team in the new arena. I should have known it was going to be a good evening for Calvin when, just seconds after gathering the opening tip, Trine threw the ball into the endzone seats, miles from the nearest player. One wiseacre shouted to the official, "Good call Todd" to which a smiling Geerlings jauntily responded, "Well, I got one right." The quick rejoinder left the assembled Knight fans both shocked and amused. Calvin scored the first 7 points and forced two Trine timeouts in the first 4 minutes of the game. Veltema and Rodts were on fire and combined for 7-9 from the arc in the first 20 minutes of play. The hay was in the barn early. It's the best sustained play we've seen from Calvin in some time.

Great playing by the Knights tonight, they beat the same team 3 times this year.

Yes, that seemed to be the burning question all day.  How difficult is it to beat a team three times in one season?  Well, Calvin made it look easy.  What was so remarkable is that this is the same team that took Hope to the wire on Saturday.

Same thing can't be said for the next opponent...  ::)

I would agree with that assessment.  They ran the four corner offense flawlessly agains Albion on Saturday...very patiently and very effectively.

Would like to hear about the Albion and Adrian game.  Was surprised with the high score.  I think it was 46-44 at half.  Doesn't seem like what you would expect from these two teams.

Is there really anyone so buffaloed by that tired cliche' that they think the 0-2 team is favored in the third game?!  If so, I'll pay your way to Vegas, just so I can bet opposite any bet you make! :D

Olivet 81 Kzoo 67

Pretty deceiving score yet in two different ways.  One its doesn't really show how close and back and forth this game was, and two it doesn't really show how Olivet dominated after the first 5 minutes.  It was an odd one in that sense.

Kzoo came out hot, confident and took command 12-2.  Olivet spent most of the remainder of the first half cutting into that lead, finally takeing a lead with about 8 min left.  The first half scoring came from two guys wearing #22 named Clark, one for each team.  Andy Clark (Olivet) and Ryan Clark (Kzoo) both had solid first halves to lead their teams.

Olivet was taking control throughout the game but Kzoo wouldn't back down and kept coming back time and time again.  Everytime Olivet seemed poised to open it up Kzoo would hit a big shot or make a big defensive stop and close the 4 or 5 point gap again.

This one got away from Kzoo with about 7 min left and it was only a 3 or 4 minute stretch that did them in, unfortunately it was filled with airballs, turnovers, and poor defense.  On the other end, every bucket Olivet scored seemed like another dagger, finally at 9 points I think everyone sensed Kzoo wouldn't or couldn't make a comeback.

Two guys really stuck out tonight for Olivet, Joel Kerns and Andy Clark, combined they were 7-10 from 3.  When those guys are hitting Olivet is one tough team.

On the Kzoo side I though Verelle Kirkwood had a big presense in the game, some good some bad, but overall a promising looking player.  Ryan Clark had a good first half but sort of faded away in the 2nd half.  Henry McCain did his best to keep the career going, there were moments when he looked like he could score every time he touched the ball.

Olivet played really well, Kzoo didn't play well enough and thats about the difference in this one.  Two very confident teams tonight.

----------------------------------------------------

Some interesting moments and humerous one's

***  I think I realized I might be watching Henry McCain for the last time about the middle of the second half.........Kzoo had  a posession with a missed shot, offensive rebound, a quick missed 15 footer, with another offensive rebound........it was Henry who was yelling from 28 feet out for his team to set up the offense.  One of the Senior leader moments thats gets overlooked sometimes.

***  On one Olivet posession 5-6 Ben Jerome ended up in a switch that left him gaurding 6-6 Joel Kerns.  It was pretty humerous to watch Olivet coach Gene Gifford franticly trying to get the attention of his pg Andre Evans.......only to see Evans throw the ball away trying to get Kerns the ball.

***  Verelle Kirkwood had  a real "And-One" moment in the second half and I hope when/if he see's the tape he'll have a good laugh about it.  Verelle ended up with the ball in the corner and had plenty of time to set himself and calmly shoot his wide-open three with no defender within 20 feet of him..........his shot casually bounced off the side of bankboard and into the band.  The first two rows of Olivet students were all over him for that one.

***  Kzoo might have gone in the tank when Nate Orozco went out of the game after getting an elbow in the nose.  I didn't see it, but it was 30 feet from the basket, it happened right before Olivet took the game over and I don't think its a coincidence.

***  With a head that feels like a balloon, its not a good idea to sit next to the band.  It was actually an enjoyable stress free evening for me.

In no way was I seeking to impugn either MK or wiz, but there are an amazing number of people on the boards who actually believe that cliche' (and have even been dumb enough to try to debate Gregory Sager about it! ;D).
