UM-Flint may begin an athletic department by 2010 and is considering NAIA, NCAA Div II, and NCAA Div III.  It would be nice to have another in-region opponent in the state...

Its always bugged me that there aren't many small private colleges in the east side of the state.   Think of all the private schools around Chicago and the complete lack of them around Detroit and even more so in the Tri-Cities of Flint/Saginaw/Bay City..................Rochester U/Madonna/Marygrove/UM-Dearborn, thats about it.

You left out Concordia (and Baker, if that really counts), but point noted.  Of course, U of Detroit is private, but maybe bigger than you wanted to include.

eh, I have a hard time calling Ann Arbor the Detroit area for Concordia.  44 miles is a long way.  But yes they are over there.

After a hiatus last year, I think we'll do a fan poll this year.

Are we including conference tournament statistics in our voting or regular season only?

Are you guys aware there's a post on the NCAA's blog with a poll question asking what the best rivalry is?

Based on previous years performance, can we consider Mantel for Newcomer of the year?

Still being smart, but funnier!  :D (that would be fart, but sunnier for Wiz)

I just read Dan D'Addona's blog of February 21 summarizing his thoughts, pro and con, about Calvin's new arena. I don't have a problem with what he wrote except for this baffling comment:

-Because there are no seats in one end zone section, just a wall, there is an echo that makes you feel further away from the action.

So Dan, precisely which endzone at VanNoord has no seats? :-\

I'll just add a random comment to all the stats sac threw out there about the MIAA tourney.  Only once in the last 7 seasons, has the team that hosts the MIAA tourney won the actual championship.  Hope did so last year, becoming the first team since Calvin 2001 to do so.  The tourney has not been kindly to the host in recent years.

2002
Host: Calvin
Winner: Hope

2003
Host: Albion
Winner: Hope

2004
Host: Hope
Winner: Calvin

2005
Host: Albion
Winner: Calvin

2006
Host: Calvin
Winner: Hope

2007
Host: Hope
Winner: Calvin

2008
Host: Hope
Winner: Hope

sure am glad Hope and Albion split...if Hope would have won both games, they would have no chance tomorrow night!   ;D
from calvin college .....

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – For the third time this year, the Knights squared off
against a Saint Mary's team amid a "season of firsts," where the Belles
turned in their best conference campaign since joining the MIAA in 1997-98.

And for the third time this year – for the third time ever, as a matter of
fact – Calvin suffered a loss to the No. 2-seeded Belles, this time in the
MIAA Tournament semifinals.

Everyone join with me in saying ... ."Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm"
I'm Chevy Chase and you're not.

When we refer to the rivalry in print, we always try to lead with the team which won the last meeting.

That's an interesting way to do it.

OK: alphabetically is one way to go. I prefer to go by number of syllables in the name. If not that, then to proceed chronologically.

For example: Duke-Carolina sounds better than Carolina-Duke.

Perhaps we could proceed theologically: the schismatics always get listed second (although from an alternate viewpoint it may look then as if the heterodox are being listed first). We could have great fun with that. I used to teach at a Quaker school whose chief rival was Catholic.

These are important issues that keep me awake at night.

I'm ok with Hope-Calvin, as it is customary for the woman to be listed first.   :: :-*
