If I didn't attend the game last Saturday and was a Hope fan, I would be happy to know from reading this board that Calvin fans are all devils and Hope fans are perfect angels that attend basketball games.  Hope fans would never steal a flag from a little kid (don't post the youtube link or a particular Hope fan will delete it and send you a nasty PM).  Anyways, the Calvin "tripping kid" was ejected and he will be severely disciplined Calvin's judicial affairs department.  That is one person.  And it looked like Joust the Knight wanted to brawl as well someone said?  Unless he was motioning Hope fans to come over to him, can you please tell me how you can know that?  Do you have the ability to see his facial reactions under that weird costume he wears?

I didn't attend the game and certainly did not come away with the idea that Hope fans are angels. Most of the discussion since the game has been about silly cheers. I had to re-read the last 5 pages just to figure out what the "incident" was and I only think two other people even mentioned it and didn't knock Calvin in mentioning.

That said the only context I have is those posts but someone intentionally tripping anyone who is running is serious and goes way beyond cheers, etc. Sorry to play the lawyer here but that is a battery. The Hope student had every right to press criminal charges and pursue tort claims (he still has that right of course but it seems less likely to be pursued with no medical bills to worry about, I assume there were no injuries). So anytime we can use the word criminal charges when discussing fan relations the collective "we" has something to be worried about. I know in my years at Hope we had some great games and a healthy respect for the opposing fans and team. However, I know there have been other years where the respect has been lacking, I sure hope that does not come back.

CHN:  Well said.  I to recall the days in the early 90's when the Presidents of Hope and Calvin issued the dire warning that if fans couldn't control themselves they would discontinue the rivalry games.  None of us want to see that happen.   :)
At this point all Hope needs to do is just take one game at a time.

All fans should just stay in their seats.  Most of the "incidents" have stemmed from someone leaving their seat and running in front of the opposing fans.  It riles up the other fans and someone does something stupid.  Calvin and Hope students should stop running around the gym and waving the flag. Stay in your seat and watch the game.

After the last 2 Calvin wins over Hope, there were numerous Hope fans that were complaining about the refs.  Saturday night,  the fouls were pretty lopsided in the second half, and not one Calvin fan complained about the refs on this board.  For the record, I thought they were fair.  Hope just was more aggressive and drew more fouls.

As for the banner chant.  It happens elsewhere too.  I've seen IU fans do it to Purdue fans. And I've seen UNC fans do it to Duke fans (who has more than Duke).

Yes Saturday's game mattered more, but Calvin's two victories over Hope mattered also.  Their will still be a trophy sitting outside the Van Noord arena that says 2009 MIAA champions.

Well before the season I made two predictions.  One was that Calvin would win the league and Hope would win the tourney.  That came true.  I also said Rodts would have a monster impact on the Calvin team.  That came true, as he started most of the year after being on JV last season.  Now it's time for me to hush, as it is Hope that is still playing their season, not Calvin.

Just to clear up some facts regarding the incident that happen on Saturday night:

1.  It happened very close to me, so I was an eyewitness.
2.  It was two Calvin supporters (students?).
3.  It was not a "tripping incident" but a blatant attack.
4.  The two attackers did not surrender easily.  One (the blonde haired one) hide amongst the crowd for several minutes until he was finally removed.
5.  I'm not sure if the Hope fan was injuried or not, but he definitely was dazed and woosy.
6.  If he had to require medical attention at a hospital or medical facility, I believe a police report must be filed.  I hope so.
7.  I hope the students (if they are students) are dealt with severely.

This smacks a little of blaming the victim, but I'm very sympathetic to the general principle.

Its not released yet but Jesse Reimink has been named the MIAA's MVP I guess.  Congrats to Jesse, one of the better individual season's from a Hope player in quite some time.

Agree, those 2 Calvin fans in the first Hope-Calvin game this past January should have not gone over to the Hope side with the flag.  I was very glad when a Calvin alumni yelled at them for it.

According to GVW, it was a unanimous decision.

If he has in fact won I doubt there will be little disagreement from anyone.  I had him as MVP in Sac's fan poll.

No disagreement here, Jesse definitely deserved it! He carried himself with a lot of class, too, the four or five games I saw him play...

I see that Hope and Platteville share a common opponent from early in the season . . . with Platteville beating Carthage by 26, and Carthage beating Hope by 19 (and Calvin by 13), with all games on neutral courts.  Ouch.

I do believe that, as I expected from this young Hope team, they're much better at the season's end then they were early on.  Still they'll be decided underdogs.

And a p.s. regarding student behaviors.  Over the years I've been impressed by the excellent and fun-spirited sportsmanship at Hope-Calvin games.  Each school is more accurately represented by the positive enthusiasm of 99 percent of its student fans, and not the isolated acts of one or two.

Here's Platteville's schedule
http://d3hoops.com/school/UWP/mens/2009

You might notice the year started off with a win over D1 Bradley.  Platteville only had one bad loss to Eau Claire, maybe St. Norbert but the Green Knights were ranked part of the year.   The rest of UWP's losses came in the rugged battles between Whitewater and Stevens Point for WIAC supremecy.

Hope/Plattville have one common opponent,.........Carthage

UWP 74 Carthage 48
Carthage 89 Hope 68

Hope's a better team than they were then, David Krombeen wasn't starting and the lineups just weren't set at all.   Have they improved enough to overcome Platteville?  Probably not.........the Pioneers were at least 1 voters pre-season #1.

Judging by the brackets, the NCAA believes Platteville is a #8 and thats pretty much a joke, this a 1, 2 or 3 seed.   Hope has its hands full Friday indeed.

I agree, but I don't like the direction its going.
