Veldhouse first team.

His numbers don't warrant it at all.  His leadership and presence on the court more than warrant it.  I figured he would get voted in as a senior.  Just like MVP, you have to pick what you vote on.  Young and Weir had great scoring seasons, but were completely one-dimensional.  Staley and Deon Thompson added more to their team's wins than those two.  In our small "posters poll" I voted Dustin Smith to the 2nd team.  In my mind, he was invaluable to the Knights in all the ways he helped them.  He was glue and duct tape.

I completely agree that Dustin Smith deserved to be on the 2nd team.

If you're referring to the letter in the GR Press from the two presidents then it was in the late-1980s (unless there were more than one).  Things were much worse in those days. The low point had to be when 100s of Calvin fans chanting 'Pedro-Pedro-Pedro...' as an insult to a Hope player with dark skin and black hair (Denison?). They also threw pizza boxes at the guy . . . it was out of hand. It happened, I was there (on the Calvin side).

You might be at a Hope/Calvin game if .... there's not even an actually minority on the court for the racist fans to taunt!

The Veldhouse thing has to be a career achievement award, not based on this season, it definitely had me scratching my head.  I was thrilled to see Matt Wayne recognized, I thought for sure he'd have to wait until next year to get any sort of honors.  He was, at least as far as I'm concerned, the most improved player in the league this year.  But as happy as I was for Wayne, I feel really bad for Staley.  He made a significant impact on the floor this year, and thought he deserved at least a second team honor.  Unfortunately, I don't have a vote on such matters.

Perhaps the coaches took Caleb's 3 game injury into account.  I'm sure if you asked most of the coaches Caleb was high on the defensive assignment list.

Andrew Holms is a nice player, but he was #12 in scoring and doesn't show up anywhere else among stat leaders except FT shooting.  It could be argued Peter Bunn, Hope and Wes Weir, Trine had better seasons pretty easily.......esp Peter.

Well anyway, congrats to all the All-MIAA honorees and thanks for the hard work.

Now that its official.

I had a hard time filling in a first team on my fan ballot.  I felt like there were more players that were deserving of second team status than slots to fill, and not enough great first teamers to fill the six first team slots.  Caleb was statistically mediocre, Desmond was only a scorer (and got shutout for an entire game), Albion didn't have anyone jump off the page for first or second team, and Weir had a great year from three but the team struggled far more than expected.  I would post my fan ballot but I honestly can't remember it all because I had such difficulty filling it out.  Sac, you have my permission (if you still have it) to post my fan ballot.

Regarding Tix for Hope vs. UWP.....we got 400 tickets, and fortunately Wheaton students are on break, so once we deplete our 400 tix supply to parents, coaches and a few season tix holders HOPEfully we'll get a few more. Tix will go on sale on Wed. morning at 10AM with whatever we have left after parents and coaches.....there are plenty of women's tix available and those too will go on sale Wed. AM.

At least with 3 schools being orange and blue, it will feel like a home court advantage.  ::)

I absolutely agree with you ziggy, and I had the same problem.  I actually ended up with a first team of Reimink, Mantel, Young, Staley, and both McClary's - but I wasn't really comfortable with it.  I guess with a league that has a lot more parity than most years, you end up with the same kind of parity among the players.

Gee, a super tough Platteville team in the tournament. This sounds familiar. I suppose we don't have to out-coach Bo Ryan this time around.  The letters U and W are never terribly attractive once it's time for the dance. A revenge win wouldn't quite get us that banner back, but would be nice to see. I assumed we would be set up to be underdogs the entire way so any wins the rest of the way are bonuses.

Hope would likely have to beat the teams ranked 5th, 4th, 2nd, and 1st to get to Salem.
Wow.

And almost certainly would play every game on the road. Does Bria Ebels have any eligibility left?

As a long time (and I mean very long) Calvin fan, I want to say thanks to the six seniors for the contributions they made to Calvin basketball and the classy way they conducted themselves througout their careers.  Also a big congratulations to Caleb Veldhouse and Marica Harris for being the only 2 MIAA players named to first team during all 4 years of their collegiate careers.  Both played through injuries this year and both were real leaders.

As this is the men's site, I won't write more of Marcia.  However, I feel Caleb was an excellent choice for 1st team.  He was double-teamed and triple-teamed and the offense always ran through Caleb.  He was the one the opposing coaches feared the most.  He was the one that posters on this site thought should have graduated years ago.  He was the one that came through with many a game winning shot.  And who will forget his recent game-winning assist in the final regular season game with Hope.  And, even in the Hope victory in the MIAA tournament title game, you could hear the gasp as he nailed a big 3 pointer with only a couple minutes left.  While his points scored this year were not up to par with prior years, his unselfish play and leadership were key ingredients in Calvin being crowned MIAA champions.  He will go down as one of the all time greats in Calvin history.  Congratulations Caleb.

Also, congratulations to Jesse Reimink for a well deserved league MVP.
