Perhaps the coaches took Caleb's 3 game injury into account.  I'm sure if you asked most of the coaches Caleb was high on the defensive assignment list.

As was Henry McCain, but he missed some games, too. Only played in 21 of the team's 25 games with 19 starts.

Andrew Holms is a nice player, but he was #12 in scoring and doesn't show up anywhere else among stat leaders except FT shooting.  It could be argued Peter Bunn, Hope and Wes Weir, Trine had better seasons pretty easily.......esp Peter.

Well anyway, congrats to all the All-MIAA honorees and thanks for the hard work.

I had a hard time filling in a first team on my fan ballot.  I felt like there were more players that were deserving of second team status than slots to fill, and not enough great first teamers to fill the six first team slots.  Caleb was statistically mediocre, Desmond was only a scorer (and got shutout for an entire game), Albion didn't have anyone jump off the page for first or second team, and Weir had a great year from three but the team struggled far more than expected.  I would post my fan ballot but I honestly can't remember it all because I had such difficulty filling it out.  Sac, you have my permission (if you still have it) to post my fan ballot.

I'll post the rest of the guys who got first team recognition from our pollsters

Weir was on 8 ballots
Bunn 4
Staley 3
M McClary 2
McCain 2
Veldhouse 2
Wayne 1
Holms 1

So there was quit a bit of indecision for the final 1st team spot.

If you're referring to the letter in the GR Press from the two presidents then it was in the late-1980s (unless there were more than one).  Things were much worse in those days. The low point had to be when 100s of Calvin fans chanting 'Pedro-Pedro-Pedro...' as an insult to a Hope player with dark skin and black hair (Denison?). They also threw pizza boxes at the guy . . . it was out of hand. It happened, I was there (on the Calvin side).
[/quote]

There was also the time, years ago, when the Calvin fans, at Knollcrest, held up dozens and dozens of empty pizza boxes when the Hope players were introduced, a slam at former football player Rick Blesch who, earlier that summer, had allegedly (not sure how the trial turned out) beat up a pizza delivery driver 'cause Rick didn't have any money to pay for the pie.
I understand Mr. Ray Smith was very, very irate with that little display.
I'm sure there are many others. That one stands out in my mind.
On a positive note, except for a few empty bottles and towels tossed out of the stands at the Hope fans who were celebrating on Calvin's floor, the kids were rather subdued. I heard they were reminded that they did the same thing at Hope a couple of years ago and were told to let it go.

ACHOOPS-00

Michael Stanley- 15.0 ppg,5.15 assists, 80% ft, 45% fg,3.1 rebounds, 34 % 3pters, 12 steals
Caleb Veldhouse- 12.0ppg, 2.75 assists, 71% ft, 33% fg, 30% 3pters, 3.2 rebounds, 3 steals

I mean is this even a debate.  Stanley should be on 1st team but his team didn't win enough games.  But him not even being on 2nd team is just a joke.  Veldhouse at best is a borderline 2nd teamer.

Some random thoughts at the close of Calvin's season:

--I saw Jesse Reimink play a few times when he was a high school player. Like now, he was a physical player with good shooting skills. When I heard he was going to Hope I thought he would eventually become a good college player, and a likely starter. I never expected he would become a conference MVP. But through diligence and hard work, he improved every year he played at Hope (particularly his ball handling and passing skills) and is easily the best and most important player on Hope's squad. I admire what he has done.

--I learned a long, long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away ::)) that a nice short-hand method for determining offensive scoring efficiency is to divide a player's total number of points by field goal attempts taken. Obviously, the number given is determined by a combination of shooting percentage and made free throws.  A resultant number of 1.3 is good, 1.4 is very good, 1.5 is outstanding, and 1.6 is off the charts.

Using that formula yields some interesting results if you compare Calvin's top three scorers from this season. Veltema's number is an impressive 1.48, a dramatic improvement from the prior season when his efficiency number was only 1.14. Mantel was at 1.33 (up from 1.21 from 2007-08). Veldhouse was a rather poor 1.04, easily the lowest number of his career. By contrast, Caleb was at 1.37 his freshmen year.

I didn't look up any other conference player, except Reimink and Matt Wayne, just because I thought their numbers would be pretty good. I was right. Reimink checks in at 1.51 and Wayne is off the charts at 1.61. I leave it to sac to crunch anyone else's efficiency numbers if he wishes to do so.

Did you use total season or just conference stats ok

I see no justification for Veldhouse being first team.  Was it a sympathy vote? Holmes is not a first teamer either. However, the coaches obviously felt that the 3rd place team needed a representative. I'm sure Yancey would've been that pick if he didn't go down for the 2nd half of the league season.   I absolutely think McCain is a 2nd teamer.

That is just plain funny.

Random Thoughts:

7.  Finally, I will start the discussion now, because I am sure we will have this conversation after the season and the all MIAA teams are announced.  Do you think a player who has gone 0-8 and 4-16 in two specific league games and is shooting 35% from the floor and 30% from 3 for the entire season and 33% and 22% in MIAA play can be considered for 1st team status?  Thoughts?

Wow, I thought this might be a topic week's ago! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Sometimes people watch skills too much and dont watch for all of the other little things that make a ballplayer great.....tipped balls on d, saving loose balls when you could just let it go, taking a beating under the boards so your teammate can get it, screening...etc., etc.  All of the stuff that people say "he is a player any coach would love to have"

I put UW Platteville through the offensive and defensive efficiency formulas.  Remeber its points per 100 posessions.

UWP offense  114.9
Hope offense 110.5

114 is a very efficient offense

UWP defense  96.0
Hope defense  97.5

96 is about what Albion did this year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's all four teams at the Wheaton Regional.

Offense
Wheaton 115.8
Platteville 114.9
Fontbonne 114.8
Hope 110.5

Defense
Wheaton 95.7
Plattevill 96
Hope 97.4
Fontbonne 105.2

Veldhouse had to have been voted for his body of work, and what he COULD have done if healthy.  One could argue that he was the 3rd of 4th MVP on his own team the second half of the season (mantel, veltema, smith, rodts)

I'll say it again.... It was I that predicted well before the season that JR would/could be MVP, and was soundly ripped for it.  I'm sure someone has the capability to go back to those posts.

As good as Jesse was on Saturday, I was more impressed with the entire team.  Osburn was big on both ends, and simply looked "quicker" than any other post in the MIAA tourney.  Bowser has become a premiere post presence on the glass on both ends.  With glaring weakness' in his perimeter game, may we see more of him "inside" the next 2 years.  Tanis and Cox shooting "lights out" and more impressive was tanis on defense.  Veltema couldn't get a shot off on him in the first half, nor could any Albion player he was guarding on friday.  Krombeen played as well as one could want, ala the begining of the conference season ( 3 more years!), and although Bunn did not shoot well in general, he continually scores in crucial moments, which is most important.  Nelis contributed all tourney, although there were a couple of jumpers he could have passed on and Vennema showed what MIAA coaches should be fearing- a go to man the the paint.  Jungling has proven to be a more than capable PG, quite good in my opinion.

I think Hope will have their hands full, but if they are able to execute their defensive scheme (their defense was outstanding for 5 of the 6 halves they played last week), if Jesse can stay out of foul trouble, if they can get others involved offensively, and win the rebounding #s- anything can happen.

I think he was mad at the Calvin students for eating all the pizza
