just a follow up to hope convert's post.

Today the guys on these teams care about these games.  they don't care about them for banners or rings or trophies.  they care about it for a few more practices, and one more game doing what they love to do.  They care about getting one more chance to beat the man in front of them.  They care about one more chance for the sound, smell, and feel of a game.  Above all they care about the chance to take the floor one more time with their team.  The people that they have spent months with for one common purpose, and they would do anything for.  Because when its over its over, and these teams will never exist again exactly as they do today.

Beautifully said, pedro12.  Exactly.

And that's really why Hope fans really, honestly, don't care about how many banners Calvin has.  Seriously, folks,  a couple of friends and I had tears of laughter running down our faces today as a few of you go on and on about banners and even go so far as to compare them to the significance of human beings (well, that was a little sad).  If you really believe that we care, you're, well, pitiable, I guess.  But hey, as long as you keep beating that moth eaten drum, then we are exempt from other attacks that might actually mean something.   ;D   ;D  Whatever.  We do kinda think you're silly for putting so much value in a couple of old honors.  They were great achievements, no doubt, but your having them doesn't get under our skin.  I don't expect you to understand, because if you could, this wouldn't keep coming up as if you were saying "your momma wears army boots" expecting us to crawl in a corner and whimper.   :P

GO HOPE!  Have fun, and stop and notice and enjoy every detail.  This moment is yours.

Doesn't get under most people's skin I would have to say, not all.

Glad you got a such a laughter out of banners, though.  Whatever makes you laugh...

One final comment.  DeHorn's total of 205 rebounds in 1965-6 is incredible, but it  tied the MIAA record set the previous year by Bill Pendell of Alma.

Personally, I always thought DeHorn was a better talent than Brady.  The difference was that Brady kept his head and DeHorn didn't.  As a freshman out of Chicago Christian, the same city Brady came from, he "schooled" the senior Brady on the basketball court and was not intimidated.  Actually, the younger DeHorn stood 2 inches taller at 6'5", which was a big man in those days.  He joined a strong cast of characters with Fredricks, Douma, Campbell, Kass, Langland, Dykema, DeMots, Otte and others.

But Bill came unglued for a couple years and when he returned to Calvin for his senior year, under the new Knights coach, Don Vroon, who had replaced Barney Steen, he never fit comfortably back into the rotation.  A memory was when he returned for his first minutes of game time coming back to Calvin and he received the ball and immediately took off for a dunk.  Of course, he was assessed with a technical foul for that maneuver, as this was during the Lew Alcindor collegiate years at UCLA when the NCAA outlawed the dunk as some way to try to slow the superstar down.

While I haven't seen Bill in years, I understand today he resides in Canada and is still very physically fit and participates in ironman competitions.  And, if you think the pranks of today's college students are unique, you haven't heard anything if you didn't witness some of DeHorn's antics.

Intreresting personality but a career wasted.  He took great pride, however, in hauling (or mauling) down rebounds.  I think if he were playing today's schedules, he would have exceeded a 1,000 rebound career.  But that's all woulda, coulda, shoulda because it never came to pass.  Clearly, however, DeHorn was the best rebounder I ever saw in 40+ years of following the MIAA.

Regarding Brady vs. DeHorn, I confess that I only saw DeHorn play twice.  But Brady was multi-dimensional.  Obviously he was a great rebounder, but he also had a great shot in an era where the 3 point play did not exist.  He was right-handed, but had a great hook shot from the left side (see the photo at the DeVos when he scored his 2,000 career point).  He was a tremendous ball-handler, and was frequently called on to break the press.   His teammates had to be alert for his passing.  Basically he could do it all.

As a senior he averaged over 10 points a game...from the free throw line!  Opponents had to grab him to stop him.  I saw one game where he made 19 free throws!

He still leads the MIAA in rebounding (remember, only 12 games a season back then) and is second in scoring.  An incredible talent that I will never forget.

When he came back to Hope several years ago he joked about what he could have done had DeVette given him the green light to shoot!

May he rest in peace.

It's not every day you can hear the "where's your banners" chant two straight games.

Regardless of the "where's your..." chant . . . the best MIAA fan stunt ever is the fake banner the Hope students made and unfurled at the Civic (and I'm a Calvin fan)

Best fan stunt I've ever personally witnessed at any D-III basketball game!

Early to bed, early to rise, early to cut out of the office... hopefully the team can give me reason to take a half day next Friday as well.

Everyone make sure to wave as you pass me in the I-94 West Grand Prix. Let's go orange and blue!

Gee, Wiz, I didn't know you had such a "historical perspective" on Calvin basketball.

Gotta run now, but I'll share a little more history with you this weekend.  I think you'll like it!

Hopester

If I were a Calvin fan, I would be rooting for Hope to win these two games this weekend for the sole purpose of having them lose to (hypothetically) Wash U. for the third straight year. Which as a Hope fan would be the most heartbreaking thing that could happen besides losing in the National Championship game.

I would never root for Calvin, in the same way I will never root for Michigan, Penn State, or the University of Florida. I would find it perfectly acceptable for Calviners to root against Hope. I find it as a sign of respect.
Its a great day to be a Dutchman!

Preview of tonight's game:

I am going out on a limb here, but I would predict a UWP win as long as they do not let the Dutch rip off a 19-0 run early in the second half.

I will agree with oldknight.  If Hope gets to that game, I'm rooting for the other team.

Where did he say that? I think the "root for the other team" came from other less mature Calvin fans (and stinger  :P).

I get the whole "don't root for" idea, but to actually root against??? Grow up and ask Jesus to help you get the HATE out of your heart!

I remember sitting in a CRC church ( :o) with a mixed group of friends (Hope and Calvin alumni) listening to the last Calvin National Championship on the radio. It was exciting, and I don't think there was a Hope person in the group that was bummed that Calvin won. We all cheered, and had a nice little CRC/RCA love fest.

Looks like there are quite a few that could use some help getting the hate out of their hearts.  Here's a post from the WIAC board.

Hope and Calvin fans REALLY don't like each other.  They are different branches of the Dutch Reformed Church.  When we played Calvin at Hope, the Hope fans cheered for us as enthusiastically as our fans.

Thanks to those hope fans for leaving the impression that Hope and Calvin fans REALLY don't like each other.

I've been reading these boards the past couple of days and I'm confused.  Should those Hope fans be considered a "bad witness" or should I take this as a "sign of respect"?  hmmmm

Either way, I do sincerely wish all the Hope fans safe driving today.  I wish it was us that was travelling today.  And please don't take it as a sign of disrespect if I do say Go Hope, make the MIAA proud!

Yes, I don't understand, either.  Aren't all fans of a team homogenous?  Doesn't what one or two do represent every single person that has ever set foot on that campus, and erase all other information about the institution?

Ask a K fan?

Just about ready to head for Wheaton.  I had pretty low expectations for this Hope team before the season began.  I was hopefull they could put things together and make a run at the MIAA and MIAA Tournament, but it was hard to expect that sort of thing.  I certainly didn't expect them to be playing on this date, hopefull but I wasn't making plans.

I've spent some time thinking about this team this week ........how'd this team get here.  I have no answer other than to say they just kept trying to get better.  Its difficult following a team from 100 miles away, I'm as distant from Hope and its basketball team as I've ever been.  I saw one game in DeVos this year, and I've missed many of the moments I enjoy that teams go through.  The kind of moments that keep your finger on the pulse, the ones that tell you what to expect from a team in the future.

I've wondered aloud how much better is Hope than December?  I wondered the same about Calvin last weekend and I know I told at least 3 people my wish for the MIAA rep in the tournament was to get the Wheaton bracket, because then it would tell us just how much these teams, whichever team has improved.  I certainly didn't expect a team like Platteville across the aisle, thats a tough draw at any point of the tournament but a killer one in round one.

I saw Hope  play Platteville in Salem in 1998, it might have been the best team I've ever seen Hope play next to Calvin's 1992 team.  So eleven years later we get that chance again, and in some way it just feels right, whatever the result I can accept it.  Its been a pretty amazing year for this team.......so close to MIAA perfection yet so far, so close to beating a rival 3 times yet so far.  Many things to ponder when the time is right.

Perhaps its the weirdness of my life at this time, but in the shower this morning I started humming a song, one I probably haven't heard in several months.  Two lines stuck out after I finally decifered what song I was humming I was kind of amazed.  These words aren't together in the song, were certainly never meant for basketball, but I think it sums things up nicely.........in a weird abstract kind of way.

The point of the journey is not to arrive

Now that's just going way too far and is really quite offensive!  You mean to say if one or two are homo, they all are?  I demand an apology!
