This is how Inside Prep Sports ranks the top 10 point guards in Michigan:
BTW, they have Duke Mondy ranked No. 1 in the shooting guard category.

1. Samuel Burton 6'1 Oak Park
2. Delano Collins 6' Detroit Renaissance
3. Jeff Hines 6'4 Auburn Hills Avondale
4. Nate Robertson 6'3 Ann Arbor Pioneer
5. Demario Prince 5'7 Detroit Henry Ford
6. Andrew VanDierenDonck 6'5 Wyandotte
7. Austin Nichols 6' Lansing Catholic
8. Korey VanDussen 6' Zeeland East
9. Austin Anderson 6' Westland John Glenn
10. Bryan Powell 6' Wyoming Park

I should point out Stephen Bell has a separate category for point gaurds and gaurds.  He does not list VanDussen or Powell as point gaurds.  I've also had the impression that much of the rankings come from AAU ball.  That may not be totally accurate however.

Powell is a scorer, much created by the style Park plays- up and down trying to outscore their opponent with little emphasis on defense.  I would have liked to see him play a season in the OK Red which plays out a lot like in MIAA, tough man-to man, grind it out, and not very pretty.  Byran is quick, but will have to spend some serious time in the weightroom in order to contribute next year (at least as much as some of you already expect him to) Two words - Micah Chappell.  Powell is better but Micah was a scorer as well....

It is great to see Calvin strike first on the recruiting radar, the new facilities have already made a difference and more kids are sure to follow suit.  i have heard that one of the Zeeland East kids is coming as well ( not Korey), not the quarterback.

I too have always thought harper was overrated.  But in an uptempo style (AAU) his ATHLETIC ABILITY stands out.  You can't coach it.

Hmm; so I'm asking myself who was the better player at Wyoming Park? Micah Chappel who averaged about 12 a game, primarily as beneficiary of no-look pass after no-look pass from a repeatedly double-teamed Drew Neitzel, or Powell who averages 24 pretty much all by himself. I'm torn.

As a general rule it is true that the OK Red is a more physical (and stronger) basketball conference than the OK Green, but not this year. The Red can't name two teams any better than the Green's Zeeland East and Unity Christian, both of whom play intense defense. In the four conference games Powell played against these two teams he had 25, 27, 25 and 21. He also played against Muskegon (the runnerup in the Red) and went off for 28 in a close 11 point loss to the Big Reds.

alright oldknight, if you want to nitpick, I'm guessing that chappell, the beneficiary of wide open looks because all five defenders were concerned with Drew, took 1/3 the number of shots that powell takes (because Drew took most of them)on a nightly basis.  Bottom line, everyone got excited when Micah came to calvin because he was "such a great shooter".  I hope for your sake that powell works out better, based on what I have seen he is a STEAL for Calvin. I truthfully thought he would end up at AQ but their facility is pathetic, Calvin's clearly enticing to Bryan.  I Don't mean to rain on your parade but he will most likely get torched defensively (early in his career)because Park doesn't believe in coaching it.  Historically that is what happens initially.

In those big scoring games, how many shots did he take?  How many uncontested  layups in transition?  Admittedly I have not seen Park play this season but he usually was the receipiant of 8-12 pts per game on leakouts.

You were correct in stating that their current conference is outstanding at the top, and historically the RED is strong, although it is way down this year.

Understanding Powell's anticipated field of study, I don't think the athletic facilities are the only facilities he was speaking of.  With an interest in media, I'm sure he was also attracted by the DeVos Communication center.  Anyway, looks like a good addition and another good job of recruiting.

I know that this is the men's site, but we want to make sure we have enough people to get a bus to go to the Hope women's game.  Go to www.hope.edu/ticketoffice for details.

Another individual that will definitely be missed.  Hard to believe he was there 27 years.

When talking about various players, and their contibution to their team it is helpful to go back, and look at the record book to see if that sheds some light on why a young person's career went the way it did.
In looking at M. Chappell he appeared to be progressing nicely, and played a decent number of minutes several years.  Kyle Trewhella was starting guard along with Caleb Veldhouse, and than along comes D. Griffen.
It strikes me that young Mr. Powell values playing time early in his career, and he is probably right that Calvin offers him the best odds of that combined with a good education in his choosen field.  Hope has excellent facilities, but p.t. would be hard for a fr. with the stable of guards GVW has.

David Krombeen faced the same "p.t." problems.

Not really the same situation - Krombeen faced talented returning guards but the starting backcourt was graduating.  This year, Hope's starting backcourt is returning and should be together another 2 years!

My intent was only to addresss the choice between the two programs using exisiting supply of guards  in each program now.  What happened last year is not really relevant to the point I was trying to make.   ;)
Apparently things worked out well for Mr. Krombeem and for Hope, but I still wonder how many highly talented guards with fantastic potential can one coach keep happy? :)
